GTA: San Andreas MULTIPLAYER????????
<

Well the story has finally broken with the latest dark rumours circulating around the web that San Andreas, the mighty Rockstar's latest epic instalment of its all-conquering GTA series, will feature a multiplayer component.
What it is and what it might do is still the cause for much speculation. Online seems unlikely given the scope of the single-player game, but a player versus player component or possibly even a co-operative mode would seem the likeliest features to us.

Still it's stunning news no doubt and finally we can break our radio silence as we've been aware of this story and these rumours for at least a week. As you'll have no doubt noted, we were down at Rockstar on Friday (for a full report see here) looking at San An's second city San Fierro and it was a point we had no hesitation in raising with Rockstar.

Our question "Is there an online mode for the game?" was met with a flat denial of "No". Our follow-up, "So is there any kind of multiplayer component for the game?" was also met with a similar stone wall "No", and there, for the moment, we had to let the matter rest.

Yet our journo instincts still bristled.

It's no surprise to find Rockstar has been playing its cards close to its chest on this one. If the rumour is true and our suspicion is that it is, a San An multiplayer mode would be the cherry on the icing on San An's considerably large cake and further cement its place as the hugest PS2 game this year.

Further calls to Rockstar this morning were also met with a "we cannot confirm or deny this story."

More on this one as it erupts.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas soundtrack announced

Rockstar Games today announced plans to release the soundtrack for hotly anticipated PlayStation 2 ***le Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, as both a double-CD "best of" collection and a complete eight-CD box set.
The double-CD will also feature a stand-alone DVD containing "The Introduction", a cinematic prologue to San Andreas, which tells the full story of the events leading up to CJ's return to San Andreas.

Meanwhile, the eight-CD box set offers the full 150-plus tracks from the game, with each album replicating one of the in-game radio stations. The mix ranges from "contemporary west coast and classic east coast hip-hop," said the company in a statement, to "funk, rare groove, new jack swing and contemporary soul, alternative rock, classic rock, reggae and country."

The radio stations in Grand Theft Auto 3 and Vice City have become a signature aspect of the franchise, "delivering a realistic radio experience by allowing players to tune the radio station in the huge selection of vehicles in the game to any station they like, complete with hours of satirical commercials and DJ banter that cleverly parodies a wide mix of radio formats."

San Andreas is set in the early 1990's, and the music has been carefully selected to match the period. The radio stations "will feature the most staggering selection of music ever assembled for a video game," continued the company's statement, "with over one-hundred and fifty tracks from artists including James Brown, Willie Nelson, 2 Pac, and Rage Against the Machine plus many, many more that encompass a great deal of the radio spectrum of the early 90's."

The double-CD collection and the eight-CD box set are both due for release late-November in the US and Europe. No New Zealand release plans have yet been confirmed.

The track list for the double-CD collection is as follows:

CD 1:
1. The Theme From San Andreas
2. Rage Against The Machine - Killing In The Name
3. 2 Pac - I Don't Give A f***
4. James Brown - The Payback

7. Eddie Money - Two Tickets To Paradise
8. Cypress Hill - How I Could Just Kill A Man
9. The Maytals - Pressure Drop
10. Slick Rick - Children's Story
11. Rick James - Cold Blooded
12. Raze - Break 4 Love

Anyway, this out today, looks very interesting. Our counter is now at 9 DAYS UNTIL SAN ANDREAS!!!

http://www.computerandvideogames.com/front_index.php?

So you wanna be a gangsta? You've got to learn the rules of the streets. New screens and info on Rockstar's ghetto superstar inside

11:45 Grand Theft Auto without gangs is like Tony Soprano without a psychiatrist, or Snoop Dogg without a ridiculous pimp perm. Organisations like the Mafia and the Yakuza have been as much a part of the series as its satirical humour and the two have often gone hand-in-hand.
One of the interesting things we've noticed about San Andreas is that for the first time in the series Rockstar are taking a far more serious approach to the portrayal of the in-game gangs.

Don't get us wrong. It's still funny. Hilarious, even, and still packed out with the visual and verbal gags we love so much about the series. But Rockstar has made an extra effort to ensure they get the origins, culture, and practices of the game's predominantly black, west coast gangs spot on.

They've enlisted loads of consultants from the period like rap legend DJ Pooh, celebrity hip-hop tattooist Mister Cartoon, photographer, director and former club bouncer Estevan Oriol, and apparently hundreds of other real-life gang members.

The idea is to get the gang culture of San Andreas as close to that of real early 90s west coast cities, and to work that into how you play the game. You'll have to think about your clothes, your ink, your behaviour and when to flick your gang sign if you want to rule the streets of San Andreas.

Colors

One of the most distinctive indicators of gang allegiance in San Andreas will be colours. Each set has it's own signature colour that members will proudly wear. Showing the right colour can be beneficial if you're in a friendly neighbourhood, but if you wander onto the wrong block you could end up a walking bullseye. The police are well versed on gang colours, too, so it's might not be the best idea to show your set if you're trying to keep it on the downlow.

You'll be able to dress CJ in the green of his local gang, the Orange Grove Families, to show your allegiance and begin making progress within the set. Of course, it'll draw as much negative attention as positive...

Getting Ink

Tattoos are another way to signal your gang membership, but unlike colours they can't be taken off. Tats have always been a huge part of gang culture, with different gangs favouring particular images and patterns, and each design holding a great deal of meaning. Again, they display your set for all to see - even rival gangs and the police.

Getting ink done on CJ will also signal your desire to hook up with the OGF, and displaying different symbols will show your achievements and attitude within the game.

Give it the Finger

Hand signals are important too. For the first time in the GTA series every character has distinctive fingers so they can pull unique gang hand signals. You'll be able to flick these signals to show your membership of a gang, identify yourself as a friend, or disrespect rival gang members.

Turf War: The Gangs of Los Santos

Here's Rockstar's own run down of the different Los Santos gangs:

Orange Grove Families: Once one of the most powerful gangs in Los Santos, The Orange Grove is the gang CJ rolls with. Their typical dress code is green pants, green hoodies and green bandanas. Based primarily in Ganton, the gang's influence has slowly eroded over the years as a result of increasing violence, internal fighting, splits within the gang, and the growing influence of drugs on the local culture. They're now in a precarious position, almost completely surrounded by Ballas territory.

Temple Drive Families Another old Los Santos family gang aligned with the Orange Grove, the Temple Drive Families are based in Northern Los Santos. If CJ's stranded near their territory and is having trouble with the cops or a rival gang, they'll come to CJ's aid.

Seville Blvd Families This family controls the southeast beaches of Los Santos, and have been almost completely squeezed out by the Aztecas and Vagos. They're holding onto a small patch of land just south of Saints' stadium. Like the Temple Drive Families, they'll support CJ, but there is trouble brewing within the Families.

Both Temple Drive and Seville Blvd Families were originally part of the Orange Grove Families but after on-going internal fighting they have split off from them during CJ's absence. While they will help CJ when up against the Ballas or the police, the internal warring between the sets means that CJ can't always rely on them to be on his side.

Front Yard Ballas The Grove's fiercest rival gang, the Front Yard Ballas control Jefferson. They can be tough, even brutal. They're Los Santos' most notorious drug dealers.

Rollin Heights Ballas These thugs back up the Front Yard Ballas, and hold the ritzy Glen Park section of Los Santos. They've steadily been expanding south into Idlewood, currently one of the most hotly contested areas in the city.

This gang's colour is purple.

Los Santos Vagos This Latin gang are based up in northeast Los Santos around Las Colinas and Los Flores. Like the Ballas, the Vagos have gotten into the drug dealing game. They're currently fighting hard in the battle to control East Los Santos, which is squarely between Ganton, Jefferson and Los Flores. Los Santos Vagos members are identified by yellow.

Varrios Los Aztecas Sporting light blue colours, this Latin gang is based in Little Mexico and El Corona in South Los Santos near the docks, their main enemies are the Los Santos Vagos. Cesar, the boyfriend of CJ's sister, Kendl, is an original gangster that reps the Aztecas. They are the kings of the lowrider, and drive some of the craziest motors in Los Santos.

Set Trippin'

The gang culture of Los Santos is hugely important in San Andreas. It'll affect how you act, where you go, and how much trouble you get into with both the law and rival sets. It's all around you: graffiti marks gang turf, shoes slung from power lines indicate the presence of drug dealers, and tattoos, hand signs and colours identify rival gang members.

And with so much conflict in the city it won't just be you causing havoc. As you explore you'll see gangs fighting for turf with each other, jacking cars, mugging pedestrians or just hanging on street corners looking for trouble.

What are you, white?

Dudes, it's gonna be just fine -- I promise. You'll like it, just give it a chance. Pretty soon, you'll be gang-banging and running the streets in your respective villages.

Old Lady Winchbottom doesn't wanna pay -- we gonna snatch her cornish pasties.

All to the thud-thud-thud of an angry, nearly shot 15 times, American.

BAAAAAAAAAH.

No, no, no.

You may not be ready for it now, but do not slate the great Willie Nelson.

"Night Life" -- genius.
"Hello walls" -- glorious.
"Crazy" -- self explanatory, brilliant.
"Funny How Time Slips Away" -- oh the pain, amazing.
"Sunday Morning Coming Down" -- his version is just gold.

There are many, many more.

Your father is a wise man. Give it time. You will see.

Thinking ahead, as always, wonder if the next installment (yes, after GTA: San Andreas) is going to be a GTA: London type of thing.

Afterall, the original GTA contained three cities (Liberty City, Vice City, and San Andreas) and then they followed it up with . . . GTA: London 1969.

Hot damn. Now that would be cool.

As far as I know Rockstar have registered the names of their next three games. I can't remember which ones though which is a pain. None, sadly, were entitled GTA: St. Helens.
