Thought it was only fair to start a thread on the conclave which has begun in the Vatican City...

Any Catholics in here got any views on who the new pope might be?

My new claim to fame is being in St Peter's Basilica when the Pope resigned.

Didn't Wales winning a grand slam have some relevancy to papal deaths?

Turkson being the favorite early on was just nonsense, people making "fun" bets. Same thing with Peter being chosen as papal name. It has zero chance of happening, I think. Cardinals are way too racist for that, and Italians are way too many. I hope I'm wrong, as an African or Latin American Pope would be great, but I don't see it happening.
I think it'll be Scola, but you can never be sure. Besides, for this conclave we are back to the 2/3 rule (Benedict was chosen through simple majority), so if there is strong disagreement between two sides, they may choose something "in between" (whatever that means in this case).
I find this whole Pope thing deliciously anachronistic, sort of like William and Kate's wedding. Stuff that shouldn't be happening in the 21st century, so I like them (while being against them at the same time).

Not an option but in an ideal world I think the Catholic church should have fast-tracked Desmond Tutu up the ranks all the way to pope. Now that guy has class, compassion like no other and dignity and it shows and I believe someone like him would be a breath of fresh air to a church which I for one think desperately needs some fresh air blowing through the halls.

Theoretically, any non-heretic male who is 18 years old or more can be elected pope, if they convert to Catholicism.

Desmond Tutu would never get elected because he's too clever and outspoken, and because he's hated by Israelis, Americans and a few Brits. He would be a perfect choice however.

I reckon Scola will get it, but he's a really bad choice. They need someone young and motivated, whose had some real world experience!

Except, you know.....wrong religion.

Maybe now "Angels and Demons" will play out (the book, not the poor film version)

The first isn't too hard to remember.

Hopefully he'll be good and bring the change the Church needs.
