McLaughlin leaving Ulster?

If this story is anything to go by, Ulster may have to beg McLaughlin to continue as boss:

It has been confirmed that a racist text message was sent to Auckland Blues coach Pat Lam's phone.

The message was sent from former Auckland coach Mark Anscombe and refers to Polynesian and Maori players in a racial and derogatory way.

The man at the centre of the allegations was not talking today, but 3 News can confirm the text was sent.

Lam would not talk either.

"I honestly have no comment, that's it from me."

The text used the most racially offensive word.

"Gareth would be playing a lot better if he didn't have n-----s playing outside him."

Anscombe is the former Auckland rugby team's coach.. His son Gareth plays for the Blues and in February had been dropped from the starting side after a poor start to the season.

"I have to work hard, look at my game and get along with the coaches and some of the senior players and if I keep doing that and keep my head down rather than sulking then I'll hopefully move in the right direction," Gareth said in February.

The text was sent around the time Lam broke down after receiving racial abuse online and on talk back in April.

Anscombe is quoted as saying the text came from his phone but that he did not send it.

All Black legend Buck Shelford says an explanation is needed.

"I've known Mark for a long long time and I don't think that would've come out of Mark's mouth. He wouldn't do that he's not that type of guy. And I think Mark needs to front up to cameras and make a formal apology on TV."

After just the second win of the season in the weekend the Blues were hoping to focus on the positives this week.

"I have no comment, I'm a rugby coach I have a job it's a simple job, I'm not the Prime Minister, and we've got a big job ahead and that's really what I should be talking about."

Instead he has been left dealing with yet another distraction.

Anscombe better have a bloody good excuse. Those are disgusting comments.

what an idiot, could hurt Ulster's image to have a guy saying those kind of things, especially after the allegations of racism by their fans on Aled Brew a few years back

Ancombe's excuse is that somebody else sent the text from his phone. Make of that what you will. It does seem odd that he'd send a message calling polynesian players that word to a man who's of the same ethnic origin.

While I wouldn't want him if it was true, it seems far more likely to me that Mark Anscombe has some stupid and bigoted friends than Mark Anscombe is a stupid bigot who's somehow kept it in check around the various Polynesian gentlemen he's worked with for about twenty years, including some of the guys defending him and one guy who's presumably recommended him to the management (Afoa).

Whatever the weather, I hope its sorted soon, and we can get back to the important stuff.

My guess is that it was a stupid, tongue in cheek comment between friends based on Lam's comments in the press about racist remarks thrown his direction. I highly doubt that a 50 year old man would have his phone taken by a friend in the same age bracket and then see somebody else send a racist text from it.

I won't jump to conclusions just yet but like the racism row that engulfed Leinster at the start of the season, this leaves a very bad taste in the mouth. If there's something more sinister to it, Ulster have to do the right thing and re-evaluate who their head coach for next season should be.

that could have been part of the reason why Sykes' stay was so miserable

Sure McLaughlin is being pushed despite doing superb job. Ulster have had enough embarrassment there so won't backtrack on this appointment and well luckily for them this really isn't a well spread news issue in Ireland
