MANU SAMOA squad for the 2011 PNC

Malo boys and girls..yeah I read that artcile earlier this morning..disappointed, but lets not cry over those guys who lack the vision to see that the Manu is a team on the rise..look at the November tour last year.

I'm of the view that a lot of the hamo boys here in NZ are being sold the black jersey story from early on in their careers - so you have to stay loyal and chase it. Some chase it and do well in the AB jersey, while others play sevens, or one or two tests as an AB and that's it. Look at guys like Kevin Senio, Sosene Anesi and David Smith (Can't name any others but you guys can help me out). I hate seeing the Manu get guys at the twilight of their careers and they are past it when they pull on the blue jersey - look at Loki Chrichton. He was below-par for Manu, stayed in NZ for too long in hopes of an ABs jersey - he would've been a star had he changed when he was 25,26,27 not 30,31 lol

Yes, playing for the Manu will limit your options to play in NZ, Australia and maybe even S.A but rugby is a global market and the real coin, as we all know, is in Europe and Japan.

Look at guys like Seilala Mapusua, Sailosi Tagicakibau, Census Johnston, Daniel Leo etc - these guys are examples of the modern-day Manu player. Play in Europe, double your Super Rugby contract, in some cases triple it) and look after your famalies back in Samoa or Aus, or NZ. At the same time and the most important aspect (in my eyes anyway) is that they are looking to boost the status of the Manu on the world stage. (Although, as an athlete NZ rugby is the best brand of football in the world - so the aspect of a challenge would keep players here. On the otherhand the respective European league are improving markedly and arguably could put up an argument as being on par with Super Rugby).

I know what I've said is an old point - but the moral of story is that the Manu really need to do well at this year's RWC to make these guys on the fence jump off and put their load in with the Samoa. I take my hat off to Kahn Fotuali'i and George Pisi who made the change - these guys will still be around at the RWC in 2015.

It's important that we make it our best campaign in history so hamo kids in Australia, New Zealand and in SAMOA play for the Manu. We may not be able to compete with other countries by offering any top-ups on their club contracts but we can say to hamo boys - Play for the Manu - get a contract in Europe - get some exposure at international level - play at a RWC - improve your stock as a club player to an international player - get paid more money than you have ever seen before by European and Japanese clubs.

I feel for our hamo boys who play sevens early in there careers and never hit the heights which they are touted to achieve e.g David Smith who misses out HUGELY on contributing to Samoa as serious international rugby contender. The kid is born in Samoa, goes to MAGS for one year, can't speak English, plays a season of sevens and is now plying his trade in Perth for the W.Force and will soon be in Toulon. He's only 25, what a waste of talent for Samoa! I've been told he would love to wear the blue of the Manu, but he knows he will never play international rugby in his life after appearing for NZ in the sevens comp. Sold the dream at a young age.

Samoa has the potential for big things - just got to make our boys see that the Blue does have benefits which outweight the the Black or the Green and Gold for that matter.
Couldnt agree with you more. Very well put sole. David Smith is one of the best examples of a very wasted talent who loses out on what could've been a very prosperous international career for Samoa by playing 7s at one time for New Zealand. They recently had a vote within the IRB to change the eligibility laws and the vote was unanimous in favour of keeping to one country for life rather than than changing it. I would love for a change in eligibilty rules so that you could only change If a player who has represented a tier 1 country, wants to play for a tier 2 country that he was eligible for after a stand down period from international rugby of say maybe 3 years. You could only go from tier 1 to tier 2 and not the other way around. That way the island nations would benifeit greatly in my opinion and international rugby would be alot more competitive than it is now if this law was to be brought into effect.

A lot of love for our samoa brothers who have made themselves available for our proud nation. I have too much pride for this country and am excited at our teams performances thus far ahead of the world cup. Kahn Fotuali'i is the biggest injection to our team. Out of all players i definitely know he would've made it in the all blacks team this year. However he made a really good decision to turn his back on the jersey and apply his heart and soul for the blue jersey. I can also say the same for our fijian/tongan brothers. I know and everyone knows for a fact that if we had out top tier players e.g. super rugby players etc. We would be a dominant force in the world rugby stage. For all the manu supporters, i feel this is our year to be up there. So looking forward to being at the world cup and getting behind the boys. Cheeeeeeeeee HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU.

KAHN FOTUALI'I is def a prime example of someone who chose pride and blood over money by choosing the Manu Samoa Bue jersey over a possible All Black call up which Im sure he could've gotten somewhere down the line if he hadn't. You could see his pride and passion for the blue Jersey when you watch the video link below of his debut for Samoa when he scores the Try and proudly displays the MANU SAMOA emblam on the heart of his Jersey to his teammates. I wish more could follow his example but Im proud and happy with our current crop. Regardless Im sure come RWC that we are still going to turn some heads... CHEEE-HUUUUU! haha..

You guys have said it all!! Dissapointed that Leiua declined to play for Manu seeing that he only arrive in NZ as a 16 year old. Good luck to him going for the NZ team and wish him all the best. Honestly though, I don't see him at all as a future All Black and will probably be another David Smith, "What if".

I think SRU should be looking at ways to keep some of the promising players who get scholarships playing rugby over cease making them play for Manu Samoa. I can understand the NZ born Samoans wanting to play for the All Blacks and also those who migrated at a young age. SRU should have a law that after asking the second time then that's it, you've been asked and if you don't want to play then don't come expecting to get in when your at the end of your career.

Not sure what the selectors got planned, but will be interesting to see what team they field in the final game against Tonga. They have only four days to prepare against the Wallabies so players like Kahn Fotuali'i, Henry Tuilagi & Cencus Johnston should come in contention for this match. Before they start worrying about the Wallabies, I hope they play a good enough side to try and win the PNC as I think this would give them a massive boost heading in to the Wallabies match and then on to the World Cup.

You'd like to think that some of these kids on scholarships would come back and play for Samoa, but it rarely ever happens - they get stuck in this rigid NZ system. Michael Jones, John Boe and Bryan Williams brought up this point years ago, and I think John Boe even went as far as trying to sort something out with the NZRFU about it, but nothing came of it.

Alama Ieremia and Casey Laulala are another two who were born and raised in Samoa - they also turned down Samoa to play for the All Blacks.

why isn't Seilala Mapusua, Joe Tekori and Alesana Tuilagi playing?

is he injured?

also how come Tonga and Fiji are playing minus players like Tonga'uiha, Lewaravu and Qera because and Koyamaibole who has left Sale now because olyy says the PRL blocks them

yet Samoa have Lemi, Tuilagi, Taulafo, Tagicakibau, Mapusua, Fuimaono-Sapolu, Fa'asavalu, James Johnston, Stowers, Lavea, Williams, Levi all playing

only Poluleuligaga is missing

it's inconsistent

Maybe Henry Tuilagi is injured. I see Jo Tekori isn't there as well. Was injured from the Japan game. Not sure about Timoteo Iosua over David Lemi though..

Malo lava usoz,

I see there has been alot of analysing on the Manu, everything looking very intersting hehe.. But just wanna ask one question first What's the deal with Henry Tuilagi??.. And on to a whole different topic about Samoa's flyhalf position.. I think personally another great choice at flyhalf for the Manu is Christian Lealifano of whatever his name is who plays for Brumbies??.. He was a regular starter last year and this year playing 10, 12 and full back.. very useful :).. buh yeah Just sharing my thoughts :)..

I don't see Henry Tuilagi in the touring squad. Where is he? A bit disappointed not to see him.
Forgot to add no Cencus Johnston either...
They're both coming off long seasons playing in the TOP 14 and Heineken cup so maybe their resting. Henry Tuilagi may not have secured a release but Im confident well see him in the final RWC squad. Cencus Im confident will be there to. Iosefa Tekori must've pulled up lame after the match vs Japan. It looks like the Wing competition is over though with Alesana Tuilagi and Sailosi Tagicakibau securing their spots as first choice wingers. At first five it is now a two man race to see who gets the starting role between Tusi Pisi and Tasesa Lavea. I do hope theyll give Fa'atonu Fili some game time come the games vs the Western Force give him atleast a chance to show what he can do and if hes playing in form leading up to the world cup. As much as I criticize him i feel he is still worth a look. Same can be said of James Johnston, Jonathan Faamatuainu, Alafoti Faosiliva, Anetelea Tuilagi, Herman Porter, Fautua Otto and Sinoti Sinoti. I think our front row, half back, wing and full back positions have been secured in regards to our primary options and first choices, with our second row, loose trio, first five and centre positions still hotly contested. it will be interesting in the next few weeks who will come out of each position as our first choices.

Malo fobcrusader, welcome to the board.
Henry Tuilagi is either resting, injured or hasn't secured a release from his club for the PNC and the Wallaby test match. As I said I'm sure well see him if he is available at the RWC come September.
Christian Lealiifano is an interesting option and would be a contender for our first five job, but he has to make himself eligible and available first. He is only 24 so maybe one day we may see him turn out for Samoa.

@Manu Samoa

I'm pretty sure Johnny Leota is starting for Samoa's game today against Fiji?? :) (Correct me if I'm wrong lol)

But yeah shot afakasi for the welcome uce.. do you know anymore players who have not still been released yet but still have a chance to make it into the World Cup 30 Man squad?..

And on a late note.. I watched Samoa's game against Japan and it a very .. very .. messy win lol.. I reckon the scoreline numbers made it look prettier.. Front row Sakaria was okay but didn't really show his form frmo last year November tests.. Anthony Perenise, who I have to say is our best prop.. Ti'i Paulo also played well at hooker.. missed one tackle which almost lead to a Japanese try.. locks Tekori and Dan Leo.. werent really good at the lineout.. BUT .. managed to turn over some lineout ball which is okay.. Selevea played good for me.. good metres.. Taylor didn't really see much of him.. Our scrumhalf was pretty good too might I add.. forgot his name.. Tusi Pisi had an alright game.. his running game looks REALLY dangerous from flyhalf.. but his tactical kicking was REALLY bad.. three kicks that went straight out?.. lol Wings played great.. Which is I think the best combination to go with.. Alesana and Sailosi.. raw power with raw speed.. Centres, Mapusua was a bit quiet for me, except for his no look pass to George Pisi he was pretty much quite whole game.. and George Pisi who I have to say is one of the most consistent players for Samoa.. always put's out a descent showing in the blue!!.. Substitutes.. Filipo Levi played well when he came on .. showed his presence straight away.. Mulipola.. need to see more of that guy.. haven't really seen him play much.. Lavea and Fa'asavalu.. also need to see more of them in 2011.. All in all I think Samoa didn't really take Japan seriously I rekon ... Japan played with more heart I rekon... with only few players like from Samoa, Tuifua (Who was great with the ball in hand and in defence) and George Pisi having a real go.. Oh and last but not least.. sorry was James So'oialo .. WOW watta a great player for the future.. and that boot of his is really GREAT!.. But I think he lacks the physical aspects to compete with the best of the best.. still a great asset to Samoa and he is still young.. plenty of time to develop into one of the GREATS!!..

Samoa suffered a heavy loss to Fiji 36-18.

Poor coaching decision to give Lavea kicking duties. I know we need a kicker but Lavea has no kicking game at all.

Serious decisions need to be made as to who will be our #10.

Tusi Pisi has a better running and kicking game. Despite his intercept pass i would be more comfortable with Pisi starting at #10.

I cannot get over how bad Lavea is and he continues to make crucial mistakes. I dont need to mention his weak boot and when he does get the ball out, its on the full.

This game was a good wake up call for the Manu despite it being a 'B' team there is heaps for the coaches to consider over the next few months.

A very shaky lackluster performance by the Manu. Fiji were the better team and wanted it more by the looks of it. Front row didn't dominate up front meaning slow back foot ball to the backs. Why on earth is Tasesa taking kicks at goal! He is not renowned for his place kicking and especially when you got a sharp shooter like So'oialo in the team.

Why on earth do we pursue with George Stowers.... Sorry guys, I think he is over rated and doesn't have much to offer. My player of the day for Samoa goes to David Lemi. Made some good runs and was good on defense and always looking for work. I agree with bonafidehamo. Tusi Pisi is more effective at number 10. Partner him up with Kahn and we have a good half back five eighth combination. Missed Mapusua's defense and George Pisi's line breaking ability. PNC is up for grabs now. With Samoa playing on Wednesday and then again on Sunday, I'd like to save our A team for the Wallabies next Sunday. Well done Fiji, big effort and congratulations on the win. See you in the world cup brothers!!

My team for Wallabies;

Fiji vs Samoa game

Well first of I would like to congratulate our fijian brothers for a good win, as the other uso's were saying they wanted it more and deserved the win.

I am not worried about the defeat today as come world cup that is where we need to get our combinations right.

Let's start off with the negatives.
Tasesa Lavea taking the goal kicks?? What was that all about. His lack of direction for his out side backs. Tactical kicking was very poor. Running game was awful and showed a lot of concern under pressure. Tusi Pisi would be a starter after watching today.
Simon Lemalu and Logovi'i Mulipola did not show why they are in there. Hopefully they are not picked in the rwc squad. Good we test these guys now rather than during the rwc.
Uale Mai was very poor. Slow clearance of the ball, poor decisions with one costing them the first intercept try that killed all the momentum that went their way in the first 15mins. Hopefully Brenton Helluer brought into the tongan game to ply his mark and hopefully show some danger to put pressure on the other halfs.
Mahonri Schwalger as a starting hooker is a big question mark. Not physical enough and was just getting nailed in every run he made.
George Stowers had an awful game very quiet and was outplayed. Would consider him coming off the bench.
Inside centres combination had no fire power in defence and offence. Did not look to be dangerous at all on attack.
Samoa have secured their starting wingers in Alesana Tuilagi, Sailosi Tagicakibau. David Lemi will warm the bench, however good running but a worry on defence.

Positives
Maurie Fa'asavalu, Taisina Tuifu'a, Daniel Leo were very tough and physical all 3 had a really game and this what we need come the rwc, you could also throw in Ezra Taylor. Glad vailoaloa came on for Uale Mai and should be the backup halfback to Kahn Fotuali'i.

There are a few players who have not shown any form and not convinced the coaches/and fan's thus far. Hopefully they can pull it together and show their form.

Here is my starting lineup come Australia test and for the world cup starting lineup including the reserves.

1 Anthony Perenise
2 Ti'i Paulo
3 Census Johnston/Sakaria Taulafo
4 Joe Tekori
5 Daniel Leo/Taisina Tuifu'a
6 Maurie Fa'asavalu
7 Manaia Salavea
8 Taisina Tuifu'a/Henry Tuilagi
9 Kahn Fotuali'i
10 Tusi Pisi
11 Alesana Tuilagi
12 Seilala Mapusua
13 George Pisi
14 Sailosi Tagicakibau
15 Paul Williams

16 Zakaria Taulafo
17 Mahonri Schwalger
18 Ezra Taylor
19 George Stowers
20 Lualua Vailoaloa
21 James So'oialo
22 Eliota F Sapolu

Hey Aucklander.. definately agree with your whole team line up but instead of Lualua Vailoaloa.. I would have Tasesa Lavea on the bench and instead of Eliota F Sapolu I would put a specialist winger which is none other than the electrifying David Lemi.. Watched the game Samoa vs Fiji and I have to say I'm really dissapointed the way we really let that game go.. as we really look to have controlled the game in the early exchanges of the game..I really really REALLY don't like Uale Mai at scrum half.. his service was terrible giving lob passess when he was supposed to give speed balls.. and he was speed balling passes which was supposed to be normal pop up passes to the forwards making the metres up front... half of the time David Lemi was passing the ball because Uale Mai was in the middle of the field lost.. really bad decision making as well which like you said.. lead to the interception try.. He tries too hard to make things happen instantly.. which is not how the 15 man game is.. sorry Uale you might be good in the 7's code.. but at 15's it's an entirely different machine.. it's a team effort which requires patience, perseverance, well thought decision making and structure.. which in the game he showed that he had no knowledge of, too used to the 7's nature... But yeah I'd rather pick Vailoaloa or Brenton Helleur as second choice AND third choice if need be..Other than that .. the team played good.. just some bad choices here and there.. but all in all.. we were outplayed from a side which which was just more hungrier for the win... ohh and one more question for everyone.. Why the hell did Filipo Levi get yello carded for being too "agreesive"???... I don't really get it??...
