London 2012

Women's weightlifting always puts me in mind of that complete badass from Chile who went into Labour halfway through a lift. She didn't even know she was pregnant. There's no shame in being out manned by someone that kick ass.

No your right there incredibly impressive but I do find it embarrassing that someone who's less than 59kg is lifting more than 100kg on the snatch and while I weigh nearly 100kg and do about 65kg at the hang snatch.

Yeah, but it is their job after all, and you're like 12 or something ;)

Just quickly coming back to the opening ceremony. South Africa was the only nation that had a male and female athlete carrying the flag...

Also, really enjoying the swimming... Melyutyte, 15 year old swimming wonderfully! That technical error really bummed out some the girls, very tense start

Yeah, WORLD CHAMPION, Tour De France Green Jersey winner, Vuelta points jersey winner, Milan-San Remo winner and the greatest sprinter in the history of the Tour De France, including four consecutive victories on the Champs Elysees (where no one had won twice in a row before him) is definitely overrated. It's like saying Usain Bolt is overrated because he's rubbish at the Marathon.

Your right in that was Germany's intention, but that just highlights how badly they got it wrong. At least GB were trying to get their sprinter to the line. No point in having a fresh lead out if you're sprinting for 6th. To expect GB to do it by themselves and then piggy back on the end was ridiculous.

Well if all the papers had been saying that Usain Bolt was going to win the marathon and it was his to lose then I would say he is overrated in that event. Team GB's expectations that everyone would help them get a bunch finish was equally as ridiculous.

That's how cycling works though. It's very, very rare that a team can control an entire race from start to finish. Practically impossible with only 4 riders and 1 sprinter.

For all Team Sky's dominance in Le Tour, there were still big pulls on the front from Lotto, Liquigas and Radioshack to help them out.

It was in the interest of Australia and Germany to work with Team GB, the fact they didn't is just crazy.

How was it in their interest to chase the break away down when one of their guys was in it? Same goes for all the other nations who had a rider in the break away. Germany, like I said before, cocked up equally with GB.

Did anyone watch the Swimming last night??

South Africa got their 2nd gold medal when Chad Le Clos won the 200m Butterfly, beating Michael Phelps at the touch to deny medal-hogger his 3rd Gold Medal for the same event in 3 consecutive Olympic games.

Phelps did show his class afterwards in the 200m Freestyle Relay though...

Jeesh that was amazing and catapulted us into 10th on the medals table at the early stage (though we're probably going to slip a bit from here on out). Thoroughly deserved even if it was as much a case of Phelps losing the gold as Chad winning as he kept it up right to the end while Phelps jst didn't manage to get to the finish with his last stroke.

It was great. Did you guys see the interview with his dad after watching his son win?. He was only just out the pool when the BBC interviewed him. I think his dads reaction was even better than the race.

yeah good on him, its identical to how phelps won one of his races in 08, pipping him on the final stroke. S.A with 2 gold medals. Good stuff.

So keen for the Cycling time trial today.
There's a good chance GB could pick up Gold and Silver in this event, especially after Cancellara took a tumble during the road race.

Really looking forward to the Triathlon, later on in the week, as well. There's a strong chance we might pick up all 6 medals for that (3x Men, 3x Women), but we should pick up at least 3 three medals through Helen Jenkins and the Brownlee brothers.
Obviously you shouldn't count your chickens till they hatch, but the Brownlee brothers are head and shoulders above all others at the moment, and Jonny cruises through pretty much every race he takes part in, regardless of whether he's using them as training races or if he's just back from a broken leg.

I'm looking forwards to the Cycling time trial today too, though I'm more interested in the women's race, as New Zealand has a genuine medal contender (Linda Villumsen).

Yeah, I'd expect Great Britain should win a couple of medal in the men's triathlon. Though the Brownlee brothers are favourites, I wouldn't rule out former world champ Javier Gomez. I quite enjoy watching the Olympic triathlon, possibly due to the fact that New Zealand have had some success in the event in the past (a Gold and Silver in 2004 was particularly memorable!). Jenkins looks like the clear favourite for the womens race, but I wouldn't rule out New Zealand's Andrea Hewitt, who has been very consistent over the last few years....

I'm just disappointed in the commentators. They kept going on about how Phelps made a "rookie" mistake instead of giving credit to the young 20-year old. And they were very excited when Phelps was still in the lead near the end and then you could hear the disappointment in their voices when Le Clos won. Everyone could see how much it meant to Le Clos during the medal ceremony except them.

It was a rookie mistake really but you're correct. The BBC got Le Clos' dad on and he was brilliant, you could hear the joy in his voice as he watched the pictures and there's always something about watching a grown man cry with happiness during his national anthem. The Beeb's coverage of the swimming in particular has been great, not too biased, they give credit and props where due, especially since we're not doing well
