Sharks' Springbok No 8 Ryan Kankowski, one of the team's stand-out players in a difficult season for the coastal franchise, will miss the remainder of the Super 14 with a broken thumb.

There was however also good news, and it seems that captain John Smit (elbow) and lock Alistair Hargreaves (thigh) will be available to face the Lions at Coca Cola Park the Saturday after the Sharks' bye this coming weekend.

Kankowski left the field just before half-time, and it has been confirmed that he would miss the remainder of the competition.

Lock Johann Muller is expected to return from his hand injury for the Lions match.

Injured flanker Keegan Daniel is also be expected to at least cover on the bench in this match.

The Chiefs say All Blacks fullback Mils Muliaina will be sidelined for up to eight weeks after breaking his thumb in a Super 14 rugby match Saturday.

Muliaina underwent surgery Tuesday to have a pin inserted in his thumb and a Chiefs spokesman said he was expected to be off the field from between six to eight weeks.

That recovery period means that Muliaina will not play further in the Super 14 this season unless the Chiefs, currently sixth, reach the top-four playoffs.

Big blows for both teams.
