Viadana, one of the leading forces in Super 10, are known as Kiwidana by the locals. Alarmed by the lack of space and opportunities for younger, native players, the Italian union has begun moves to join the Magners League with two centrally funded professional teams, each allowed a maximum of five foreigners on their rosters. Marcato, out of contract in the summer, has been asked to put off contacting clubs in France and England until the picture becomes clearer. "We need something like the Celtic League because we must be better prepared," he says. "The Italian league just isn't at the same level. I've seen it in November and in the Heineken Cup [where Treviso shipped 112 points over two games against Leicester, and 68 in a single afternoon against the Ospreys].
"You're coming into international games without being used to that standard of rugby, the highest standard, and it's a problem. In Super 10, instead of risking a young guy and letting him make his mistakes, they go with the ready-made solution. It's the system, the mentality, that must change."
Mallett, a keen proponent of the Magners bid, included six uncapped youngsters in his championship squad. Having a reliable stand-off is, however, the biggest change.[/b]
