this may be true or untrue, but the French have a claim to inventing the game of rugby a game called Soule which used an inflated pigs stomach as a ball dating back to 1174/77 in the Thomas Beckett era, apparently when the ball was punctured they sold it to the Scots so they could make Haggis!!!! The game was often played in a mare (bog) and was apparently very violent probably decendends of one or two French front row i know of later years, but there you go, true or untrue who knows but interesting all the same.

This is true. The game of La Soule over here goes back to the Middle Ages. It is the predecessor of rugby. It used to pitch a village against another.

Rugby fans in a few regions are trying to restore la Soule to its former glory. There are clips from the movie La Soule that was made about the game (ignore the video footage of street violence which has nothing to do with the game)

nice backpedal..

Backpedaling from what?

I feel you are getting more obscure in your derision GN10. 10 points as always for contempt, but making me have to work to find the meaning behind the criticism sort of defeats the purpose. C-, please try harder.

Lelo Burti in Georgia is very similar and dates back to the 12th century. Cnapan in Wales looks to go back to the 7th century.

I'm fairly sure Golf is just a case of allowing people from Northern Ireland to declare for Ireland or the UK as there was a big question over who Rory McIlroy would declare for in the Olympics.

Nah, All golf clubs in NI are play under the Golf Union of Ireland, that's why McIlroy and McDowell, if he qualifies, have to play for Ireland in the olympics having already represented the GUI during their amateur careers.

Cricket and Basketball too. Most sports actually. Notably not football for obvious reasons.

The All Blacks got the name the All Blacks from a miss-print in the paper from their impressive all back playand obviousely because their kit was "all black" the name stuck

Copied from Wikipedia:

The team departed New Zealand as the New Zealand Football Team, or, simply The New Zealanders, though names such as Maorilanders and Colonials were also applied. Reference to the team by the name "All Blacks" first appeared during the Originals tour when, according to Billy Wallace, a London newspaper reported that the New Zealanders played as if they were "all backs". Wallace claimed that due to a typographical error, subsequent references were to "All Blacks". Wallace was the last of the Originals to pass away, so this explanation for the name's origins is widely believed. However, the Express and Echo in Devon, reporting after the Originals match there, referred to "The All Blacks, as they are styled by reason of their sable and unrelieved costume." The new name quickly became popular throughout Britain, though its acceptance into popular culture took a longer time back home in New Zealand. On 5 March when the team returned home, the Herald acclaimed the "New Zealand Footballers", however, the following day its report of the official function was headed "Return of the All Blacks".

The United States are the reigning Olympic champions in rugby, having won gold at the 1920 and 1924 Summer Olympics.
