Hurricanes v Crusaders

Dunedin would be my guess for RWC semis if Christchurch cant hold them - i read that if they can't hold RWC games in Christchurch, the region stands to lose $50 Million in lost revenue, so I guess they'll be doing everything they can to retain the games ... how many does the new stadium in Dunedin hold by the way?

As for the Crusaders games, I guess seating capacity is also a consideration, but it may be an opportunity to play some of the home games in the other unions that make up the franchise including Nelson ... i'm sure the likes of Marlborough, Buller, West Coast, Mid Canterbury, and South Canterbury (did I miss any out), would welcome a game.

The Forsytn Barr Stadium will have a capacity of 30,514 (according to Wikipedia...)

I would like to see the quarter finals played in Dunedin if they can not be played in Christchurch. This would, however, raise some problems. Admittedly the new Dunedin stadium is about 8,000 seats smaller than AMI Stadium but since all ticket revenue goes to the government it would be our risk to take. The real nightmare would be saying to 8,000 people that they could not go to a quarter final which they have already bought tickets for. The most likely option is still that the games will go ahead, as planned, in Christchurch.

As for the Crusaders, Westport and Greymouth are far too small to host Super 15 matches. QEII is also out because of earthquake damage. I would assume that Ashburton too would be too small. That would leave Timaru (12,000 stadium and population of 42,000), Nelson and Marlborough. Two or three games at each of these three venues would probably be a fair deal. The other thing Canterbury could do is take their games around other parts of New Zealand. For instance, they could play the Blues in Whangarei, the Chiefs in Rotorua, the Hurricanes in Napier and the Highlanders in Queenstown. They would not really be away games as a lot of people in small towns neither go for one team or the other.

To touch on someones point earlier, should AMI be ready will Christchurch be? I mean we'll have coach loads (me inclusively) coming and staying at the various hotels/motels/hostels. I hope it would be because going to Christchurch was the one thing on my itinerary i was looking forward to, that and hopefully seeing Aus/Italy, Argentina/England

I think it's a bad decision to call the game off. Unless the squad has family who have lost their lives I'm not sure they need to be there, it isn't like they are part of the recovery teams searching for people. Surely it would've been better to play the game, use it as a fundraiser (take a percentage of the gate like the Warriors are doing), have donation gatherers at the ground as well. Also give the poor people of Christchurch something else to think about on Saturday night.
If they want to be with their families it seems like it'd be a good opportunity to take them away from the area and bring them to Wellington.

In saying all that my condolences goes out to all those affected, absolutely heartbreaking to watch/hear about it.

To the above, I guess they could play them at Tasman's home ground up in Nelson, or QEII like someone else mentioned.

I think the right call has been made. One of the Canterbury Rugby Board members died in the quake. If the Crusaders don't want to play then thats their choice and the rest of us just have to respect it,who cares if there no rugby saturday at the end of the day the priority is resucing and comforting those in need.

Gutted the game aint being played but theres far more important things for the Crusaders and the people they mainly represent as we all know. Besides theres always next week and the week after. I'd have to say that the 'Canes might have got of lucky.

Hey bro,

I know you don't mean offence, but frankly, there is no way that this game should have gone ahead.

Firstly people have died.

Secondly a LOT of people property and possessions have been destroyed (Players included).

Thirdly, the players themselves were there during the quake and have not had much sleep since with aftershocks etc (according to All Blacks interviewed on the radio this morning).

And finally, while it may have been something for Cantabs to think about on saturday night, the reality is, most of them wouldn't get to see it- a lot of them don't have power, let alone be in their own homes and able to watch a TV.

And most importantly; as seriously as us Kiwis take the game of rugby, it is just that: A game.

There are more important considerations right now.

i can see the Rugby World Cup in jeopardy, as it is the quakes are getting shallower and shallower... It started off around what? 19km deep? now its at 5kms?... something is seriously happening under Christchurch and I fear in the coming months they will be hit with another devastating earthquake. I mean if you think about it, they have been getting shocks ever since the first one in September. I honestly believe another quake will devastate Christchurch in the next couple of months.

You're not an optimist, are you? The fact is an aftershock with a magnitude of 6 was not a suprise; it was completely expected. There will obviously be further aftershocks which are probably around 5 but I think the chances of another earthquake so deep and so near the city centre are very, very low.
