The highlanders team: Ben Smith, James Paterson, Kendrick Lynn, Shaun Treeby, Kade Poki, Lima Sopoaga, Jimmy Cowan, Nasi Manu, Alando Soakai, Adam Thomson, Josh Bekhuis, Jarrad Hoeata, David Te Moana, Jason Rutledge, Jamie Mackintosh (captain). Reserves: Brayden Mitchell, Bronson Murray, Joe Tuineau, John Hardie, Aaron Smith, Robbie Robinson, Siale Piutau.

Thoughts? Not bad considering our injuries

Hurricanes team to face the Highlanders: Cory Jane, Julian Savea, Conrad Smith, Ma'a Nonu, Hosea Gear, Aaron Cruden, Tyson Keats, Victor Vito, Jack Lam, Mark Reddish, Jason Eaton, James Broadhurst, Michael Bent, Andrew Hore (captain), John Schwalger. Reserves: Dane Coles , Neemia Tialata, Faifili Levave, Serge Lilo, Chris Eaton, Daniel Kirkpatrick, Andre Taylor.

I predict Highlanders getting dicked. A few new forwards, but I predict Lima being well too undercooked.

Some interesting selections from both teams. For the Canes it's good to see Bent starting ahead of Tialata at prop as he's a talented young player - certainly sends a message to Tialata that he needs to be fit and on form if he wants to be guaranteed a start for the Canes this year. Reddish at 6, ahead of the likes of Levave and So'oialo, is an interesting choice. He played well for Wellington this year (before he was injured) and I think he tighter game will actually suit the Canes as it will allow Vito to play a much more expansive game. No surprises in the backs - the backline will be devastating given front foot ball...

A few interesting selections in Highlanders as well. I'm really surprised the Te Moana is the first choice tighthead - he had little rugby at all last year, playing only a couple of games off the bench for Wellington. I was shocked he was selected as one of 5 props in the squad, so certainly didn't expect him to start ahead of Aulika, King (who I thought would have been the incumbant) or Murray. He must have been very impressive in the preseason! I would have liked to have seen Tuineau start alongside Bekhuis at lock (as I would have liked to see the entire Southland tight-5 together), but Hoeata should do a good job. I don't understand why Sopoaga has been selected ahead of Robinson - I think he may be badly exposed at this level. I would have liked to have seen Veainu start on the wing, but I think Patersons size is needed in what is a small Highlanders backline.

Overall I'd expect the Canes to win by 15-20 points. The forwards packs as relatively evenly matched, but the Canes backline is far superior. I particularly worry about the 10/12 channel for the Highlanders as Sopoaga is not a huge guy, and Treeby does have defensive issues - Nonu could cause havoc!

Just as I thought they've gone with young Lima at 1st five and if he can show composure, mistake free basics and effective conjuring with his backline it bolds well for his and the Highlanders future. Recruited well has the Highlanders of 2011.

The Hurricanes look a very good side, especially in those backs its like WOOH.

that hurricanes backline looks so good, as usual it will depend on whether they can get front foot ball consistently. I'm hoping with Hammett in there they might have more emphasis on that area. His selections kind of hint that way taking hard workers like Bent and Reddish. They really don't need Levave and Vito in the same loose trio so I think it's a good selection. Pretty keen to see how this one plays out.

Feel sorry for the highlanders with the injuries, wouldve been a good matchup between slade and cruden.

I think this one ends up as a bonus point win for the 'canes, too much inexperience (as usual) in the highlanders backline.

Robinson has never looked the goods at Super Rugby, he has only been average at ITM Cup level.

Yeah the Hurricanes backline looks real slick. Really looking forward to this season, I have high hopes. Our forward pack though looks paru compared to the likes of the Crusaders & Bulls etc. Our backline needs to have an amazing game to beat those teams...

I think we'll thrash the highlanders. Nonu will terrorize the whole game. I predict a 13+ margin in favour of the Hurricanes.

Anybody going?

Not too worried about Tialata im sure when the Canes play the big African packs he'll be in there for sure.Yes the loose forwards are a surprise but a welcome one. Be intresting to see how they go against the Highlanders trio, the Highlanders backrow is actually pretty good with Nasi Manu at 8.

The Canes backs could really rip the Highlanders to shredds if they get going,i hope Nonu goes back to running hard and breaks the line.

I also think the Cannes will take this one altho it will be a good game.

im wondering how much of Jamie's "insider knowledge" re the wellington guys has played a roll in the selection or if it was purely the "best" lineup, im not stupid enough to think we will thrash you guys or even win but i would hope it will be a closer run thing than some of the predictions

Jason Eaton you idiot!! You're screwing my fantasy team!!

Great ! Why are all the Canes players in my fantasy team atrocious today?

Nonu is racking up bulk fantasy points for my team. (negative points, i hear they are worth double)

Red for Nonu

You're going down.

And so am I as the Canes will probably lose now...

Nonu gets a red after a shoulder charge on Cowan, who was happy to play dead for a while.

A bit unlucky maybe, but just stupid really from Nonu.

Edit: wow we're lucky that Slade isn't playing, the game would be over by now.
