Highlanders Sign Pumas Prop

Erm, the difference is that Australian teams' best players are NZ players, whereas the NZ teams tend to be signing foreign players to plug gaps.

Not really the point but I disagree regardless.

Most Kiwi players that get an OZ contract are average ITM cup players that generally can't get a NZ super rugby contract (certainly not starting spots anyway):

Ged Robinson, Albie Matthewson, Telusa Veainu, Sam Christie, Jayden Hayward, Tamati Elison,Mike Harris...

These are the ones I can think of off the top of my head. Hardly world beaters, even within the franchises they play for. Tamati Elison is the exception but only due to exceptional circumstances.

The eligibility rules the NZRU have in place effectively prevent the foreign franchises from getting hold of our best players anyway....

The point is that things are changing mate. In the past NZ franchises plugged gaps internally via the draft - now they look overseas as well! (Look at what JK is saying re his locking stocks at the Blues)

Furthermore, check out the number of Ozzies now playing in the ITM cup:
Nic Stirzaker, Paul Alo-Emile, Michael Snowden, Albert Anae, Beau Robinson, Kimani Sitauti, Tom Murday, Ben Seymour...again, just theones I can think of off the top of my head. I know also there are players fromfrom France, Canada, Ireland, Wales, and South Africa all playing in the ITM cup as well...Not to mention the usual suspects from Tonga, Fiji and Samoa!

Have you ever seen an ITM cup with so much international diversity??

I'm not saying the NZ players are good, just that they're better than the Australian ones.

I'd have no issues if they signed one or two foreign players at most, as the New Zealand teams will be doing. Indeed, I was absolutely fine with it when Oz teams could sign one project player (i.e. a player who isn't Oz qualified but will be in a few years) and one foreign player, but they seem to have thrown this rule out the window. Having a marquee signing is absolutely fine, it's when you start relying on foreign players to construct your team that things get stupid. If you remove the NZ players from the Rebels and the Force they become (even more) abysmal, the same can't be said for the NZ teams. If you can't maintain five teams independently of other countries, you shouldn't have five teams.

An interesting signing. I have no issue with the Highlanders (or any other NZ franchise) signing the odd international player - it certainly will help widen the Highlanders fan base. The NZRFU does monitor the signing of non-New Zealand players very closely (teams need permission to sign them), so I can't imagine NZ teams ever ending up with more than 1-2 overseas players (given the current regulations).

So, is this good for the Pumas?

Isn't this what we wanted to see in hopes of strengthening the weaker teams in the RC? (If I'm not making sense blame my 10-day old backache and several glasses of wine. :p )

das
