Hosea Gear has rejected the chance to move to Japan in a bid to win back his place in the New Zealand team.

Yeah, this news kinda makes me sad.

He's 28 years old and hasn't been given a fair shot for the All Blacks. He obviously loves New Zealand and wants to be in the All Blacks, over any money from overseas. I just feel he should be selfish and get the cash while he's young enough, rather than rely on selections which for some reason or another are never ganna happen.

I was shocked to see this but Good on him I guess, but with the All Blacks building towards 2015 and Gear now being 28 the Odds are stacked well against him. 28 is still young but wingers seem to peak early 20's and their test carriers seem to wind up post 27-28. And the fact he's that and never been an established All Black.... well

Honestly I think it's out of his hands, he can play really well but he's not going to make it back into the All Blacks unless Savea bombs or there is another injury. Even then he would only get a look in till the injury situation clears up. The fact Kahui and Jane are injured and he's still not in says a lot. And there is only room for one or two specialist wingers in the squad.

Bit of a shame how his carrier has turned out, Stuck behind Rokocoko for so long, have to also consider that he has had quite a lot of injury problems and he's not known as a rock solid defender and that has been an important selection policy for All Black wingers for some time. And clearly the main reason why Kahui is now considered the best 11 for the AB's. Lots of great attacking players around but few have the defensive package Kahui has with punishing tackling, high ball skills and kicking and an epic kick chase and still has a high try scoring strike rate in test rugby.

What sticks out in my mind is that NZ Maori win over England where Gear was devastating. The English must wonder how this guy who tore their team to shreds can't make the All Blacks.

^^ Be fair injuries haven't really held him back. Kahui has been more injury prone than Gear for sure and has still managed to get a fair few chances (and has taken them).
He should have taken the money overseas, he hasn't had a fair shake here at all and he probably never will.

If Rico Gear had played for any other nation he'd have about 40 odd caps by now. While it's admirable to see him fighting for his place, you do feel it's a bit of a losing battle.

so basically he's just sent a message to everyone he's going to spend the next 18 months proving a point....would not want to be wearing the number 14 jersey...you gonna get run over!

whether he makes it back to the ab's is a different story but i'm glad he's on my team

good man and at 29/30 he will still be able to pick up two or three (more) seasons in japan

Hats off to him, you don't see this ogten these days
Kind of getting behind the man now, good luck and may you become a All Black again Hosea!

Not sure he'll get a look in on the wing at 28 years old to be honest, especially with the Allblacks. He's only had 1 or 2 good season, the rest of the time he's been unable to iron out the major flaws in his game. He might regret this in a few years, although even at 30 years old i'm sure there would plenty of JP and European sides that would love to have him.

Great news for the Highlanders! While he hasn't been outstanding for the Highlanders this season, he has been pretty solid. He has been a bit passive at times this season, but it was great to see him throw his considerable weight around a bit more last week (both in attack and defense) - hopefully he keeps this up!
