Takudzwa Ngwenya of the USA skinned Habana in the USA v SA match.
From what I've seen so far, he has pace over most distances.
I think he's faster than Varndell, but I guess we won't know unless we see them match up, which is somewhat more likely seeing as he's meant to be playing for USAP now.

Indeed. For all the Habana hype he destroyed him in that match. Of course some factors play in that. If Habana had run a bit in the previous 5-10 minutes he would still be out of breath and unable to approach anywhere near his fastest speed in that particular moment.

Off the mark in a Rugby match I'd still place Jason Robinson as the quickest over the first 10 metres.

didnt read all pages sorry :
when Howlett started playing i would have said him, he holds the NZ secondary schools sprint record for the 100 and 200m.
Other Jonah Lomu was very fast alot of people dont realise how much he had, they saw him as big and quick but for awhile there he was pushing olympic Qualifying times

Others in their prime, Cully was quick, Wilson too

on the note of the 40m

back in 1998 when Rob Brady was my teacher at school, ( he managed alot of the all blacks till recently) he lived with his buddies, tana Umaga and martin lesley and he told us from a relaibnale souce tana obviously tha only 4 all blacks had gone under 4 secs for the 40m soribnt, cully and wilson were two of them

under 4 secs!!! thats outrageous!! cully had the one of or the best time for the agility test im sure of that but dayum thats super quick! under 4 secs? can olympic runners to that?

though being fast over 40 metres is a key skill, it doesn't mean that certain players are faster, from experience i know. before i played rugby (and for some time during) i was a 100-400m sprinter, the majority of people (over 100m) start really gaining pace after about the 45-50m mark.
i don't think speed per se is the most prevelant issue, more if you can change direction/run awkward angles onto the ball off the bat, then maintain the same speed so you can start to accelerate.
i would therefor say in most cases power (speed+strength) is the most effective attribute, however in some situations it's just a matter of how fast you can compaired to the other guy.

</two pence>

it wasnt like 2 seconds or anything, it was under 4 seconds, we triend to get it cloestes i got was 4.1 :(

Habana , I saw the vid where he outran a cheetah which was pretty crazy.

Well he did get a 30metre headstart but it was still impressive..

Marika Vunibaka would of outstripped anyone a few years back he was crazy fast. He caught Jonah Lomu twice in the same play after being fended off the 1st time, cut down Breyton Paulse from 15m behind and ripped the ball from him to add salt to the wound and in a game between Canterbury & Bay Of Plenty he caught Rua Tipoki from 20m from the other side of the field when Tipoki got a intercept.

Lelia Masaga for Waikato Chiefs is pretty quick too he ran around Habana last season.

Sosene Anesi has the fastest 40m time recorded in nz rugby history of 4.53 so under 4 sec just isn't possible for those players mentioned.

I think Tom Varndell's pretty quick too, saw him on his England debut and he was quick then!

Habana is fster than Takudzwa Ngwenya because Takudzwa Ngwenya admitted it.. but Tonderai Chavanga is the Fastest Rugby Player. He can run 100m in 10.27 seconds, making him possibly the fastest player in rugby union. . look here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tonderai_Chavanga

Who is the only international rugby player to win an Olympic Gold medal at a sprint event in a then World Record time?
I reckon he'd be the man to beat.
