England Rugby 2019/20 Thread

I don't think anyone's trying to suggest that are they? Burgess said that he didn't see the need to bring Ford off the bench vs Wales and implied that doing so led to the team playing worse and losing the game, but I definitely never got the idea that he was suggesting it was an intentional throwing. Just that he doesn't rate Ford much as a player and didn't contain the Welsh midfield as well as Burgess had been doing. Unless I've missed something then you've made a pretty enormous leap to get to anyone claiming that Ford threw the match.
Burgess suggested that Ford Snr wanted England to bomb the WC so that he could take the job and he did that through using Burgess as a pawn and exerting his own influence through George.

I think that's what he was saying anyway?

Yeah, Burgess said the Ford's conducted a conspiracy to overthrow Lancaster and get Mike the Head Coach role, that George and Mike were both trying to undermine Burt; and used that match as an example of doing so.

As I said at the time of his article - if that had been said about Mike Ford at any time that he was an assistant coach with England - I'd have easily believed it, and considered it confirmation of what was already known (except George's involvement, obviously) - especially 2007. But claiming that Mike was attempting a coup on Lancaster in 2015 is just utter lunacy.

I bet Goodes got a story about whichever DoR is in the press atm
He's rugby's Piers Morgan and the sooner he fades away into obscurity the better
He does appear to have a massive chip on his shoulder that virtually nobody really thought he was an international class player.

I might have this wrong but if you have a large ego and think your the best person for the job then Mike probably thought Lancaster was throwing the world cup away and only he and his son could save the day which is why he was undermining Lancaster. I believe Mike Ford is a snake and wish he wasn't at Leicester. He undermined the whole England team in 2007 very publicly.

History probably proved him right on this one....but I don't think Ford undermining him had anything to do with with the campaign.

all the little things add up though...Burgess isnt a fool and knows what its like to part of a winning team, in his opinion Ford and a number of players undermining the coaching staff was a big contributor to England getting kicked out at the group stages.

Burgess has an axe to grind though with union in general and didn't exactly cover himself in glory in his time here. He also gets brownies points with his League buddies for putting the knife in regards to Union. He definitely wanted to be the next big things and didn't appear to want to put the hard work in.

That's harsh!

Did Ford undermine the 2007 World cup?

I thought the whole thing was a shitshow.
Old players thinking there way was the right way especially Wasps v Tigers players.
All 3 coaches split on how to play rugby and a coach who like Lancaster was really just too nice.

Yeh Mike Ford certainly didn't help but again hard to put sole blame on him.

Honestly thats how I see it, how else could you explain someone thinking they could get into a tier 1 Rugby World Cup squad in less than a years worth of Union.
At least Te'o gave himself 4 years pretty much to try and get into that squad which he couldn't. But he had 2 season of union before getting his cap.

Remember him saying England had no world class players after the SA group game which even if it was true was very stupid.

I mean we can go back in the threads I know just about every Bath fan watched a lot of his games as they were regularly on BT Sport, it was generally agree upon he wasn't ready he could play center adequately but never look convincing. His runs at flanker showed potential that he could be genuinely be very good and considering the flanker issue in England at the time could of really staked out a claim in the post world cup years.

However it was clear he only had an eye on playing at the world cup. And of the many things he didn't warrant his position at center and considering how successful the Farrell/Ford partnership was in the immediate aftermath that got us up to a wold cup final with many highly prised scalps along the way. It was also an option that was discussed by many people here at the time. If Lancaster had not picked Burgess and went Ford/Farrell/Joseph or even tried it once....

******* hell, as if lockdown couldn't get any worse, let's all relive the 2015 World Cup!
