Had many VPN issues this morning everything working now.

I'll probably try to duck out this conversation mainly because everything that I had planned for the next month and a half has been cancelled (some fairly, some feel like knee jerks and not within government guidelines and some other countries) and contemplating not really seeing another human being (other than my wife) doesn't exactly fill me with joy.

Not looking forward to setting mine up later this week - I'm the only windows user in the company and even our local server is a Mac, can tell it's gonna be a nightmare

Errrm, are you running through a VPN before you VNC into work?
I have to VPN to access a private network so I can RDP on a machine that is connected the actual hardware I'm developing software for.

The issue is simple I work for a company with 114,000 employees with centralised core IT infrastructure. For some reason its a tad overwhelmed currently.

Just had some kids in from one of local schools saying they're closing early from today for easter (except yr 11). Not sure how widespread that is.

I work at a primary school and it honestly feels like teachers are being sacrificed for others. Avoid mass gatherings, except if you look after 30 children, then you must go to work. There are already examples across Europe of some schools open on a skeleton staff to support medical workers etc... Whole thing is a joke.

yeah feel for you and teachers. Govt. is just thinking well WTF are going to look after the children if all schools close? Parents who need to work? Grandparents? Err no!!! No win situation.

As said, the schools could easily restrict admission to the children of critical workers.

Having 3 in a class instead of 30 greatly reduces risk of one of them having the virus to spread.

But this is the point, there are solutions to that as I said above skeletal staff with a limited number of children so they can focus on hygiene and look after themselves. The reality is more and more people are isolating/working from home and so many children can be looked after already. I'm not sure why people are approaching this as a black and white issue, where it is either closing schools or keeping them open. There are solutions in between that can work.

However at the moment you have a very disjointed approach, the numbers of children in school make it hard to ensure they are constantly washing their hands when they need to (if they cough/sneeze etc...this may happen where an adult can't see them and they might forget to wash their hands or just ignore it, especially younger children). I have had arguments with a senior member of staff about sending a child who was continuously coughing home (as per the guidance that says continuous cough or a high temperature) as she said it had to be both cough and temperature. We then continued the discussion in front of parents and she almost gave them the choice of whether to take their children home and one clearly just didn't want as it was inconvenient for her (she doesn't work, before you ask).

It's clear that we are being told not to take risks, yet schools are without a doubt hotbeds for transmitting viruses and even if kids get a milder form it's putting the adults who supervise them at risk.

Yup, not sure why they aren't giving parents the option of keeping kids at home if possible. I know a lot of people will choose to keep their children in school due to inconvenience (work commitments etc.), but I'm sure there'd be plenty wanting/willing to do so as a precaution, or to do what they can to help.

They could always then ramp it up and close schools in the future when necessary.

Could you imagine if any politician in the Labour party were accused of saying that, it would be front page news.

For a leader of a country to joke about such a crass name is horrendous and demonstrates him contempt for the majority of society

Just when we thought Johnson was starting to act a bit like a grown up.

It seems to have been said in a call with a comparatively small number of people, but he should know that nothing he says is ever fully off the record. There's a time and a place and for the Prime Minister that time's not now. A lot of people, especially with ill relatives, will be offended by that.
