[COVID-19] General Discussion

Exactly.

In Northern Ireland there's been an uproar with the closure of churches. One in particular opened during the lockdown and is being investigated by the police - Tandragee Baptist Church.

They claim that the ultimate authority is god and the government can't tell you when to pray in churches.

It confuses me because if god is all-powerful and omnipresent then he can hear you pray from any location.
Yeah and Gods dont tend to be very effective when stopping plagues and pestilence

I haven't been to London since March when our firm sent us home. Got an e-mail reminding us that the office is Covid Safe - but it's nonesense, especially having to travel on the tube and then sitting in an office for 7-8 hours and we know this virus is spread through aerosols.

Sound like the governments complete nonsense Christmas rules are about to revised.

It was foolish in the extreme to suggest opening it as much they did and for as long. Should just be two householes can meet inside 24/25/26 otherwise tier system rules apply and be done with it.

25 deaths in NZ from COVID 19 due to early elimination strategy.
I agree to an extent that you can't directly compare countries, but there are things that can be learnt.

For me I put the current failure down to one thing. Not having a functioning test and trace system. If we had had that then the government could well have avoided having to make the crappy decisions they have made this autumn/winter. Once we came out of the original lockdown we needed a test and trace system that could keep on top of every spread. Instead we got one that let the virus pretty much run rampant. Every other decision was then based on the fact that the virus was going to spread rapidly again because tracing it wasn't working.

There are other factors that haven't helped, such as the government's mishandling of the economy which has meant that they have absolutely no room to manoeuvre when it came to issues on the economy. Other countries can afford to lockdown more or harder because their economies haven't suffered as much. Ours is in a weaker position, especially with no deal brexit coming and so any further hits just makes it worse.

However ultimately all of this is down to test and trace never working properly, because at that point, just like in the spring, the government had no accurate way of knowing how far the virus was spreading. Instead they had to get their data from positive tests, which means often it's too late and the person will have been spreading the virus or from the ONS calling people and asking about symptoms (How is that an accurate measure?).

What you are telling me that the UK doesn't have a 'world-beating' track and trace system?

But Boris said.....

It's almost like that old maxim of business actually applies - "if you don't measure it, you can't manage it".

Covid (and Brexit) seems to have just been treated like a great excuse for transferring money from public coffers and into private hands; and I'm still not sure how much is malice, and how much is incompetence.
Contracts for mates was definitely deliberate - but surely, between the lot of them, they could have found some competent mates to put in charge of T&T, PPE, ferries etc etc

I'm usually against shouting in the work place but from the general gist I'm guessing this wasn't the first time he had to mention it. Its good he points out why the regulations are important.
