Commonwealth Games 2022

Throwing this in here as it's not worthy of a new thread or the political thread.

Are the Commonwealth games lucrative for athletes at all?

They're bickering about flags again up north, in this case Irish athletes competing under a flag that doesn't represent them.

I'd be of the opinion that if you consider yourself Irish, then don't compete in the commonwealth games because you're competing in a competition that doesn't include your nation, which is a load of bollix.

That's ignoring any potential financial gain and dual citizenships (it's varied enough up north that people would consider themselves anything between one of Irish / British / N Irish or all three, and then the reasonings for that varies even more in some cases).

It's mostly an example of continued foot shooting up there but I've never understood why some of the most nationalist athletes from the north (Paddy Barnes immediately comes to mind) compete in those games.

The official flag of the statelet is the union flag and not the Ulster Banner. A bit like the moans about Ireland not playing GSTQ when we played at Ravenhill, these complaints could be easily avoided if the unionists could contribute to any identity not rooted in sectarianism. But I'm also waiting on a cold day in hell.

As far as I'm aware, there's no prize money in the Commonwealth Games.
But prestige, and medals will increase earning potential for sponsorships and potential future media work.
