Cape Town - Cheetahs flank Heinrich Brüssow is leaving South Africa to further his career in Japan, according to a report on the Volksblad website.

The 26-year-old is set to leave Bloemfontein after the completion of this year's Super Rugby competition. His contract at the Cheetahs runs until after this year's Currie Cup, but it's unlikely that Cheetahs coach Naka Drotské will scupper his plans to move earlier.

Brüssow's contract in Japan will also not allow him to play for the Springboks, which means his dream of adding to his 20 Test caps is on hold for the foreseeable future.

He is, however, likely to keep playing Super Rugby for the Cheetahs as the Japanese season does not run concurrently with the southern hemisphere tournament.

Brüssow, whose last international match came at the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand two years ago, has fallen out of favour with current Bok coach Heyneke Meyer, who prefers bigger, stronger forwards.

Meyer's disinterest in Brüssow is likely the main reason he decided to move abroad.

Another good player from the Cheetahs leaving.

In my opinion the best openside flanker South Africa have had. His 4-0 record against the All Blacks speaks for itself. I'd personally have given him more oppertunities for the Boks - prefer him to even Pocock as an out and out fetcher.

I can actually understand both HM not selecting him and him moving. I guess this was bound to happen, let's just hope that he can keep injury free.

Hopefully he'll return for the Cheetahs in SR. Good luck in Japan, Heinrich!

So that adds to our exodus for next year; you can almost make an entire XV from the guys leaving and though its good to have the space for the youngsters coming through our competitiveness in SR is probably going to suffer a tad. Now if only JdV, Spies and Daniel would announce they're moving on..

in other words " to become a millionaire"

Still, very sad, he is a great guy and terrific player

I guess it's a shame that he wasn't selected more - but some how 'very sad' doesn't seem apt. Worse tragedies than making millions in Japan .

Makes sense really. He heads off to Japan for a year and lets his body recover whilst still keeping fit and playing rugby, then he returns when HM has been sacked as coach to regain his test place.

Agree with you. But you must remember in this country we have stupid mentality of picking size over anything else. Especially Meyer likes to Frankenstein them into positions and Brussouw no matter how well he has done he won't get picked cause he is seen as too small. Its sad really. But its the truth

my goodness, France and Japan are eating up the rugby world.
Money money money moh-neh......
