Boycotting American Companies

To be fair, the idea of comparing Americans to Americans is never fair. The US is so diverse state by state. The idea Hawaiians, Alaskans, Greenlanders, New Yorkers, and Texans all have a shared culture is crazy, and the fact they share so much when it comes to value system is pretty impressive. Those drunk racist rich kids who wrote the constitution should be patting themselves on the back right now.
I completely agree but it’s not like we don’t have any indicators as to what Americans think.

I’m sure I’m not the only one that has meaningless (in the grand scheme of things) anecdotal evidence as well.

I was watching a film with my American brother in law over Xmas and a confederate flag was on and he said he’d be happy for the South to secede the Union. This is a right of center trader whose parents are first generation Greek immigrants who probably vote Republican. People are funny.

I think the view of Americans from Europe is largely driven by tourist interactions while in europe...

Noone comes across Cletus, Shaniqua, or Buck in Europe, its always rich entitled white college kids, or big city rich families being loud obnoxious, and entitled. Most Americans are certainly not that, Texans are super down to earth, as are the fly over states. The Chinese are having the same problem, i think their tourists have recently overtaken US in obnoxiousness in europe.

The other view is living amongst them, you only get an inside view of the state your in, and thwn adopt the bias from them about other states lol.

The 3rd view is quite a new phenomanon, the global social media look at their worst. Influencers, live streamers, etc, they represent US in the worst light possible.

I loved living in the US, ive loved travelling it, there are a few more places i need to visit (PCT, and Hawaiia are next on my list), and its no great shock that Americans dont travel internationally as much as us, well because they have far more atbhand than we do. The last decade will go down as a contentious one, but i think history will be far kinder and more rational to this era than people are being right now, when you put all of Trumps actions (not stupid words, or negotiations as he would say) into context, its about in line with American supremecy we have seen since WW2.

That said, i am fully on board with @Which Tyler boycott, action is aleays a good thing, and ive railed against the US influence in the UK for decades, i just think a blanket attempt would be too difficult, and a more focused attempt on 1 company at a time might work better

I've had my fill of American travelling for a long time I think. I was visiting a friend in San Fran, had a great time and played a lot of golf which was incredible and met good people but the standout person I met was an Aussie.

Worst interaction I had was with a group that I'd be confident I align with politically (San Fran so blue, liberal etc... but I expect our motivations are different). I met some people who I suspect were not as aligned (golfers travelling to Cali from Texas, Arizona) but still good people.

I just felt like it's an angry country at the moment. Never felt unwelcome but it wasn't friendly like I've experienced in the past (although I think east coast is better for that).

Best interaction I had was with two lads who after talking for a bit asked me if I'd like to live over there, their faces dropped when I immediately said "No, not really" haha.

Ive probably had some similar interactions, as ive mentioned before some of the closest relationships ive made are New York, chirstian, MAGA types, who despite me diagreeing with their politics, religion, and countries actions over the years, absolutely embrassed me as family, so much so i visit regularly. I didnt like California, as you say there is a lot of anger and resentment i think, Im very much an East coast guy i think, the saying i was told by an old school New yorker was:

If you want Kind, **** off west, but if you want nice, stay East. I think thats bang on, West coast say lovely things while driving past you while stranded in thw rain, East coaster will call you a Duechebag while up to his elbow in engine grease trying to get your car going.

As I've said many times there appears to be a huge gulf between between East/West Coast and most metro areas and those supporting the Trump governement. (And you only have to look at voting districts as evidence).

Despite all the Americans I know professionally and personally none are open Trump supporters. Most would also agree with most British people's here assessment of things.

I met a couple of young Canadian women the other day who are over here studying. I spoke to this young lady for about 10mins and I **** you not, all she could talk about was how much she hated England and what a horrible country it is and how she would never come back and can’t wait for her degree to finish so she can go back to Canada.

It was funny for the first minute or 2 but after minute 10 I was like, alright love,
Jesus, I get it. You hate the UK. lol.

That sounds like the most unCanadian thing I've ever heard of. I would live in Canada if I had the chance though (opportunity fell through, think my ex-Boss killed it)

Yeah I was quite surprised how much she hated it here and how open she was about it. It was like she was traumatised and I was her therapist. To be fair, her first year was in Sunderland so not a great first place to stay. lol.

She was from Toronto so I can understand the difference must’ve been pretty big.

Yeah, most Canadians I know wouldn’t be so rude but to be fair this girl was only 20 years old so just a baby.

Spoke with a tourist last year from Vancouver. He absolutely loved the UK and felt it was much nicer and safer than his home city. I know Vancouver has some issues.

Went to Calgary last June and have convinced the Mrs to go again in the summer. The few Americans i met were either your typical American tourists or keeping a low profile and kept apologising. The Canadians were fab.

All Canadian cities I've visited have a massive homeless issue (Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver) compared to the UK which definitely leads to a feeling of less unsafe but feel is very diffrent from reality. I was in general no less safe than central London.

Ive come across a few of those working at Scottish Unis, a Hawaiian girl didnt make 6 weeks as her mental health to scottish weather and diet destroyed her life. Another Californian, went home after her 1st semester, due to the people lol.

I think a lot of Americans find thw UK wet, cold, damp, grey and just disgusting on tye senses, and tbf you cant blame them, theyre not wrong *looks out window with tear in my eye*

I think "person from X, not liking living in Y" is universally common. As Welsh Exile said, allowing one experience in one or two places cloud your judgment of an entire country is just youth.

I like visiting Britain well enough and it hosts some great events. Wouldn't want to live there over Dublin in a million years, I'm sure there's people on these boards alone who feel the exact same way in reverse.

Loved Dublin, ill forever be a Northsider at heart hahahahaha andbit was only 6 months before i left and moved to Ennis.

I mean on cities I've visited Paris is high up on most disappointing along with Vienna
I've seen so many videos of scammers and criminals around Paris and seen a fair few of them myself. Suffice to say, not police in sight as these people commit literal daylight robbery at the main tourist attractions. Also it's not PC to say it but the whole lot of them were foreign, not French.
