Odd. He's not injured and only 24. I couldn't see a reason in the article, why is he retiring exactly? Couldn't have been a million miles off a Scotland call-up.
He was fed up with the way he was being handled by the union after moving north from Sale, where it must be said he didn't have an easy time with injuries
It's a shame, thats why I said what I did in my post, the SRU seemed to think that the best way to develop players is to plunk them on the sidelines at the pro-clubs until they are 24/25, and by then they are either 'ready' or not (Kind of like "Don't throw them into the deep end"), in this case they decided he was not, wasn't offered a new contract and just gave up, he probably could have got a contract at one of the second division English clubs but decided against it
Its mightily fustrating, as young players have either lost their careers (as in this case) or had them started to late, its quite obvious that sitting on the bench, playing the last 10-15 minutes of matches for probably the most important development years of a players career are not good, but luckily these views seemed to have changed in the last 2-3 years, because in the past young (as in 19-20 year olds) were only played due to one or a combination of: injuries, lack of depth, actual quality, rotation and such. But now we are seeing youngsters getting plenty of game time, and not just because of the aforementioned reasons
Hopefully Jackson can secure a move to another team where he can nail down the starting berth, so as to allow Duncan Weir sufficient game time to develop
Gloucester have quite a few Scottish players, and with Nicky Robinson leaving could he possibly be on his way down there?
Edit: Also to say that in one article Blair 'advised' young players to "pursue other interests"
