While it's definitely a 2 horse race between Read and Parisse (Spies is all power and speed... Which is great, but frankly doesn't make him the best 8 in the world), in my opinion Parisse edges it.
Read is an absolute work horse in attack and defence, and great for making hard yards + linking play, but Parisse has sublime hands and is at times a one man army in the Italian side. Huge presence in attack, plays first receiver for Italy regularly in open play, a wall in defence..
Oh. And I haven't seen Read do this

Its easy for Parisse to get noticed as he is the captain of Italy. I think getting noticed in the All Blacks is much harder. You could argue it's easier to play there but stand out from players that are the best in their positions is not an easy feat. Aerial skills wise Read has nothing to envy Parisse at.
Some of these options are hilarious I rate Read, Heaslip and Parisse as my top three all incredibly close with in my opinion Heaslip shadeing it. Suprised by lack of mentions he's got people mentioning Spies ahead of him get clean.
Heaslip doesn't have the all round game of Read and Parisse. I would have called in a 5 person race in 2009 but Read, Parisse and Harinordoquy are a class above the rest with just brilliant all round games. Louis Picamoles is also one of the best attacking number eights, but again, you need an all round game.

Righty-o, without meaning to sound condescending, that's just silly. Heaslip is fantastic at the break down and a good tackler to boot. Just because he's bloody fantastic with ball in hand doesn't mean that that's all there is to his game. There was a reason he was up for World player of the year a while back (or did I just make that up)
