Aviva Premiership 16/17 - Round 2

If (/when) the citing commission scrub the red card from his record that's a massive slap in the face for wuss.
"We cost you the win with a crap decision but at least his disciplinary record looks better now!"

"Leading" is exactly that - holding it up in front of you.

I defy you to tell me he did that...

Tuilagi does exactly that motion 5+ times per game (no exaggeration).

The player was knocked out because he tackled poorly - falling halfway between tacking around the shoulders (the safest place to tackle another player head on, IMO) and the legs.

Could only follow text updates while I was at work, but sounded scrappy as well. Still, a win's a win and I'll take that + Mugford kicking 100% all day.
Worrying injuries, though - Webber, MacGinty, Ioane and Beaumont all in two games.
Sounds like Ioane will be out a while, but hopefully Josh went off as a precaution.

He moved from a position where his arm wasn't going to hit the player in the head, to a position in which he was. I call it harsh because it is a split-second reaction in a high-speed collision. But there is clumsiness involved. He didn't have to release an arm; he could have gone into the tackle with both hands on the ball, as most players do. He releases an arm presumably to attempt a fend, but got the timing wrong.

As I always say in these things, you have to punish harshly if you want to change a culture. Warburton's red for the tip and the subsequent reds since then, although arguably harsh, have brought a clarity to the game on tip tackles that was never there before.

Having seen it now - it looks worse than I'd expected from having read forum posts. Red is in the harsh-but-fair category for me.
He transfers the ball to his left arm, freeing up his right, which then comes up before impact, with the elbow bent to 90*.
The tackler then essentially head-buts Fa's elbow region and KOs himself.

It's not deliberate, it's instinctive - and perfectly believable that Fa didn't even realise he'd raised his arm; but it's reckless.
IMO he simply mis-timed a push off against the tackler, and moved his arm out too early; but it results in a strike to the head, with the elbow.

Had he left his elbow tucked in against his ribs - basically, timing it correctly; then the outcome would probably have been the same; but it would have just been a rugby incident, no foul. Had they not had any replays, it would probably have been a red card; as 1 look in real-time looked bang to rights.

If you genuinely believe that then you have to punish every single occurrence of this.

Which will lead to literally tens (and possibly over 100) of citings every weekend.

I struggle to watch the game now. Genuinely.

Head clashes should result in a red card for one of the players for headbutting.
Flip a coin for which.

Massively agree with this. I see this move at least 10 times everything rugby match. In fact I'll probably do this myself when playing today and I would never expect to be penalised for it.

I don't. I see similar instances where the tackled player gets his timing right, and doesn't raise his arm in advance, dozens of times per match; but really not many when he does lift the arm, and does catch the tackler on the head with his elbow.
Had Fa been 1/3 of a second later rasing his arm, it would have been fine (IMO) - and that is something that happens all the time.
It's the only way to protect your ribs at a tackled player.
What about the orthodox option of doing the exact same thing; but not raising your arm into contact.

Dear me...we are our own worst enemy.

Rushing it, rash passes and offloads, unstructured...flippin well relax!!!

From memory; He didn't - he raised it during contact, which is absolutely necessary to keep your ribs away from the contact, rather than just allowing the contact to transfer through the arm into your chest.

George Ford slotting another DG.

Goneva off and a penalty try!!!

What about Homer tacklking Goneva with out the ball!!!??? Sh*te

Game over already!

Rokduguni with a fantastic "no try" that leads to a penalty try awarded and a YC for Goneva.

The card was for slapping the ball dead - rather harsh IMHO - the PT should have sufficed.
