All Black Strip

wtf happened at the interview?

I'm not sure about the England away strip... I'm not too fussed about the black jersey but why did they make it all black? Yes NZ's away strip has a white jersey but they wear black shorts. England could have gone with a white jersey and black shorts but they didn't, they went all black.
What would be the point in a white change jersey when you have a regular white jersey?

What if they pay against someone who plays it white?

WHAT THEN???

It was just like something out of a sketch show, England played terribly then Borthwick comes on the telly and starts spouting rubbish cliches

"The boys went out there and we gave it 110%" etc.etc.etc. just generally cringe cringe cringe :p

I've had a chuckle reading this so well done chaps.

Our "black" away kit has quite alot of red in it so there :p, either that or we've called it espresso or onyx or some drivel. Also that green in the NZ training kit is not exactly the same shade than SA, if anything they're ripping off Kermit the Frog and I dont hear him complaining.

It reminds me of the Liverpool fans saying "oh no, our away kit has blue in it". Well technically but it's not exactly Everton blue is it.

As long as it's not Pink I dont think anyone apart from some NZ fans really give a stuff.

As far as I'm concerned anyone can make their second-choice kit whatever the hell color they feel like. England's first-choice white kit would have caused some visual troubles against Argentina's blue and white hoops, so they wore their second kit. What I'm curious to know is, on the chance that the teams' first kits clash with each other, how is it decided who changes to their second to avoid it? I remember wearing our gray kits against France in 2007, which is understandable since France were the hosts (though, the match itself was one of the ones not played in France; the other three quarterfinals were, unlucky for the hosts to not play their quarterfinal in their own country), they had every right to ask us to wear our second kit.

Still have to agree with what Richie says about the color of your jersey.

Also, for the record, according to Wiki, Argentina's second kit is purple, a color that as far as I know has absolutely nothing to do with Argentina.

It is an odd thing, but it does seem to me that as a rule it is mostly the European countries - and in particular England - that seem obsessed with coming up with disconnected and unusual away jerseys to make some kind of marketing-centric fashion statement.

Heck, Australia has a white and gold away jersey that they seemingly cobbled together only because the RWC organises required it of them, but our boys could have gone with an all dark green outfit with limited gold piping and hooping on the socks if they wanted too (they could even have made it a home kit). It'd make them look a lot more like the Kangaroos and Springboks, but it'd hardly be outside of Australia's traditional sporting colours (also think of the more recent dark green ODI sides addidas kit, with their true gold lining - was a fan of that).

Traditionally the home team changes their kit in the event of a clash - During a WC the home team is just the team named first, so in the case of France vs NZ, despite being in France, NZ (on paper) were the 'home' team

Haha I laughed a lot at this thread!!

Seems to me it's only a few Kiwi's who have a problem when it comes to alternating a kit... first the Highlanders switching to green (which I really liked) and now this whole debacle with england wearing black...

it's just colours dammit!! we can all be glad none of the teams go all white like in test cricket!!

I thought in World Cup matches it's decided by the team who wins the toss

Could be - I'm not 100% sure, but I know that England were the first name on the fixture list (so in the home team slot) vs Argentina, and the same goes for NZ/France in 07

why did France need to play in their away kit against Japan?

and why have England started wearing away shirt vs Argentina?

I think both are just a ploy to wear the away shirt more tbh

it was in their bags and felt that they don't want to go home with it unwashed in case they don't make the play-offs so they decided to wear it in the first game to get it over and done with...

Does NZ not realise that Wales also have a black change kit?
Or does that not matter because they're not England?

This...
I don't understand why only England is receiving all this flak.

personally i don't care about the black jersey, but the reason England are coping flak and not Wales, is because black has always been Wales alternative strip, but England have only made black their alt strip for this world cup.

maybe people see it as raining on the all blacks parade, like wearing a better dress than the bride on her wedding day :D

Sort of. Wales have actually had so away many strips it's terrible. They've had black, yellow and blue away strips in the last four years.

I love how england's away kit has had all the flack, and no one is bothered by wales'. I really like the wales away kit but honestly, when watching a game i want to see both teams in their national home colours. And the only fixture NZ will have where this is a problem is vs France. If NZ play England, England will be in white. So does it really matter what the away kit is?

Correct, all but the blue one are "traditional" colours, before that we had white ones.. Tbh though I dont know what it is I just prefer black shirts over the traditional ones.. Also the yellow one wasnt too bad tbh xD

Not sure why England have chosen all black as their strip. A bit cheeky in my opinion but who cares. Lets watch the rugger and enjoy!!

I don't like our change strip being all black and yes I do think it's disrespectful to NZ. Sure NZRU don't own the colour and yes Tonga essentially have the same kit as Wales, USA, Canada, etc. but England, like New Zealand, are one of the founding eight unions of which all the strips were unique. I didn't like our red change because it reminded me of Wales and I don't like this one as it reminds me of the All Blacks.

So what should be our change colours? The problem is that our secondary colours of navy and red are too reminiscent of Scotland or Wales. Personally I think the first change strip we ever produced in 1993 was the best. We never wore it but it was cleverly designed incorperating all the aforementioned colours whilst still looking like an original concept. It was navy with red and white hoops and actually looked pretty smart.

On the subject of our socks, black was definitly the original colour but I'm sure in later years it may have became navy blue to match the collar and 'go faster' stripes added to the sleeves. Of course, this year they are white and make us look more rugby league than ever!

Infact, when I went to Rugby (the town in Warwickshire that is) I was told by an old fella that there was some sort of unwritten rule that only three teams could wear the combination of white shirts, white shorts and BLACK socks and that was Rugby School, Rugby Football Club (now Rugby Lions) and England. I remember saying at the time, 'Wow, and I always thought they were navy blue!' and '...but Rugby Lions play in Orange! (I later found out this was due to the 'Lions' Rugby Cement sponsorship.)
