Adam Byrnes has received a surprise call up to the Russia squad for the World Cup

Russia have named their 50 man preliminary squad for the their first ever Rugby World Cup. A big surprise amongst the players called up is the Melbourne Rebels lock Adam Byrnes who apparently has Russian roots. Star player wing/full back Vasily Artemyev, yet another player who credit can go to the Leinster academy for, and who has signed a contract with Northampton for next season is in the squad. As well as lock/flanker Andrey Ostrikov who will play for Sale next season and was being targeted by Clermont until they opted for Nathan Hines instead. There is one player from the Top 14 in the squad who is another lock Kirill Kulemin of Castres who has struggled with injury over the past season. Another France based player is fly half Konstantin Rachkov who plays for the side who signed Jonah Lomu and Isitolo Maka a couple of seasons back, Stade Phocéen and previously has been playing at around ProD2 level in France with Montauban, Lyon, Tarbes and Aix-en-Provence since 2001. The majority of the Russian based played play for VVA-Podmoskovye, who are Russian champions. They also have the second oldest player to be named in a preliminary squad so far 38 yer old Vyacheslav Grachev was playing when the team was the Soviet Union, only Alec Parker of the USA by 12 days is older from the players who have been named in the preliminary squads, however he is three years off the record set by Diego Ormaechea who played aged 40 in 1999.

Russia played well in the Churchill Cup in June and nearly but for a few missed kicks and a dodgy scrum upset Italy A, and were very entertaining to watch playing quick ball then spread it out to the wingers style of rugby, which if they continue to play will win them many admirers on a global stage in September.

Here is the squad in full: (players in bold are players who play in continental competition)

NOTE: the squad was named in June yet the squad has had no mention on planet rugby or any of those sites, that is the second bad moment in a couple of months for rugby sites, they kept on writing the Tonga 2007 World Cup squad with the headline Vuna makes World Cup squad for the Tonga preliminary squad and now haven't mentioned this.

Yes nd because of this all the other rugby sites reported the same in regards to the Tongan squad. I had to email Planet-rugby.com with the real squad listed on Matangitonga.to before they changed it and failed to acknowledge that they made the mistake in the first place.
A boost for Russia's RWC campaign. The more professional players they can bolster into their ranks the better. Adam Byrnes knows he probably wont get a call up to the Wallaby squad anytime soon, so I guess good for him to possibly sacrifice his super rugby contract for the Rebels to answear the call to for Russian national team. I hope it works out well for him.

I remember they mentioned this during the Churchill Cup

Byrnes got Gareth Delve to ring Kingsley Jones to say that he wanted to declare himself for Russia
