A Political Thread pt. 2

Looks like Cambridgeshire and Peterborough going for a Tory mayor. Big rural areas, and a tale of two very different places.

Peterborough, Conservative and in the top 20% of deprived areas in the country, with some areas 60% kids in poverty. Cambridge City, liberal and affluent. With a town and gown divide.

Vote reform you could be seen as a racist, vote Labour you could be a Transphobe or certainly not a trans allie, Greens a woke CND pacifist, Libdems a hater of women and girls, and lastly vote Tory there's a special place in hell waiting for you.

Got to love politics. I was never a Corbyn fan but yeah kinder and respectful politics seems a long time ago.
You forgot the Anti Semitism lol

Corbyn outperformed Starmer in much more difficult circumstances, and history will be kind to him!

Racism and poverty go hand in hand. It's easy to sell the "it's all immigrants fault" to people who don't have a great deal and walk down Grimsby high street everyday seeing everything close down. What I will say to that is there a lot of people who aren't poor, who have had good long lives, have benefited from cheap houses and still seem to think immigrants are the blame for all their hardships and lap up the ******** the Daily Mail comes out with. My parents for example along with my Aunt's and uncles. These people benefited from the war their parents fought in and the change those parents demanded when that war was over, yet paint themselves as victims to the lefty elite blah blah blah. I have no sympathy for that perspective and call it out whenever someone like my dad goes on about "all our problems are down to Pakistani taxi drivers robbing red diesel"

I'm from a working class but pretty conservative background, self employed Maggie loving parents, military service, Rugby player, shooting, Fisherman. I used to be very pro Brexit even having proper rows with certain people on here (not the crappy wumming rubbish harry tries to initiate) about it so I understand people's viewpoint on voting reform because a decade ago I would have voted UKIP despite being married to a Pole. It's easy to listen to simple answers to complicated questions and because people like Farage are not polished politicians that does have an appeal to some people, I'm not saying that I agree with that but it's unfortunately true.

Because of growing inequality Reform and other far right groups are winning the culture and social media war and until the mainstream parties and media start taking this seriously we will see this continued move to the far right. It's not the first time this has happened, growing up in the 80s, seeing National Front marches, in the 00s seeing BNP councilors elected but the difference now is social media, yes you had the right wing ranters on Radio and the Daily Mail has always been there but social media had magnified everything. Twitter is a ******* **** pit as is most comments sections on YouTube. It's also been exploited by foreign governments who want to destabilise this country, how is it that siding with Ukraine or getting vacancies is all of a sudden such a controversial thing? Simple, social media is intentionally flooded with contrarian views designed to cause mistrust and bad feelings.

The progressive parties in the UK and Europe (couldn't give a **** about America) need to start getting their messages out there and as much as it will upset some people they need the likes of an Alistair Campbell to spin this stuff and go toe to toe with these idiots on GB News. They also need to forget about people like my parents because they will never vote Labour so why bother.
Mirror image...

My entire family here in Wales vote Labour because 'Labour are for the working man' hahahaha

Ignorance is pretty much everywhere.

Progressive parties all over Europe are sacrificing themselves for the major left of centre parties, they have to be to counter the rise of the right, It brothers, AFD, Reform, NR and Co...

We should be looking to people like Daryl Davis, not Hillary Clinton.

Cambridge is a dump

To be fair to the greens they had a lot of really positive ideas that they were starting to get the message across about. What f****d them was their leaders publically saying stuff about turbines and what not but just not in their own constituencies, from there it was easy for farage et al to discredit their plans because why would wind power be any good if you don't want it for your constituents? If they sorted out their leadership arrangements they could be a real alternative on the left to labour - as evidenced by the GE results. the LD's seem to be picking up council seats from the soft tories so my guess is next election they will focus on former labour voters on the left and position themselves as 'new' new labour

I wish they would, Lib Dems just don't seem strong enough to offer themselves up as a real alternative. I feel like at the next GE if Reform are a credible threat they will just become a strategy tool to beat them out.

I'd love Greens to take some very strong progressive ideas, and just discuss them with real people before going forward. The wind turbines is a great example!

Greens seem to idealistic currently, some common sense and they would win my vote back really easily!

Peterborough is, that's why we kicked it out of Northamptonshire years ago.

Cambridge can't be they are too rich and posh to vote reform. It's only after the leave university here they become Tory Mp's or Russian spies.
This is why I'm looking to move to Cheltenham which at county is now a bastion of Lib Dems and a Green ;) I need to get deeper in my bubble.

Tewkesbury results still awaiting....

I've seen lots of evidence of people of power and influence push people to extremism but not so much ncurd unless he is really Donald Trump or Andrew Tate or something. My money is on he isn't.
I'd more likely be James O'Brien middle aged white block screaming into a radio about how frustrating it is whilst people call me and fail to prove a point when presented with incredibly basic facts.

But nope just middle aged Project Engineer who was Software Engineer for 15 years (not like Kemi Badendoch who was one for 5 mins)

Gloucestershire is swinging Lib Dem, probably due to the lack of Reform/Brexit Party voters last time out.

Shan't be moving to Quedgely though
You lucky *******!

Ali and I split our votes - 1 Green, 1 LD; on the principle of not knowing who had the best chance.
We previously had 2 Green councillors -but last time, neither labour nor reform actually ran candidates. This time, LD and reform have both been pushing hard (and we've a LD MP, who's been very good TBH).
County-wide, LD have by far the best chance of controlling, but I don't want to vote LD if Green is the best candidate in our division.

ETA: just had a look at the map locally, and if I've got my maths right, LD would currently need Green to control - with Green being the 2nd party.
3 to declare
LD 23
Grn 11
Rfm 10
Con 6
Lab 1
Indie 1
55 seats, so 28 needed

Well let's use Trump as an example...

How many Trump voters have been converted to sanity since 2015s initial run?

If we look at the numbers, 62 mill 2016, 70 mill 2020, 77 mill 2024.

So it's safe to say that over the last decade, Trump supporters have risen exponentially from very few (everyone laughed at him in 2015) to over 77 million people a few months ago.

The over arching discussion about Trumpnis that he's a racist buffoon, and anyone who supports him are racist hicks with no brains.

How has that strategy panned out for Democrats? It's given him a mandate, and carte blanche to do all the dopy **** he does. His supporters are more entrenched than ever, and the number is growing.

Where Dems have lost the country, is it's refusal to empathise and embrace those on Trump's side, AND those in the middle. Remember, if everyone who supports Trump is racist, what do undecided voters do when asked their thoughts?

There are literal studies that link Empathy to persuasiveness, I can't find a single study that would link calling someone the most heinous insult imaginable with persuasivenes, and I get your not trying to convince the other side, it's the non, and undecided voters who win elections, but one side, or should I say 'your guys team' comes across as vindictive, nasty and bereft of compassion, when you do things like dog pile a Trump supporter, or the constant beratement, belittlement, and requests to ban me, whonis essentially the only person left disagreeing with elements of what is said...

Your not helping our team, your harming us!

I think we are the same ward, I was looking at county council there no reform guy last time in 2021.

Brough Council it was 2 Greens but we had that or two Tories.

I agree its almost impossible to work who to vote for and get "not a twat"

Must be - Tewkesbury East.
I'd thought you were Stroud*, but hey ho

*ETA: Which has gone Green with a frank majority

Yup Tewkes East (although I think in 2021 they hadn't re drawn the boundary lines and I was technically in Ashcurch and had to drive 3 miles to get to my "local" polling station)

Stroud has returned 2 reform so they can still get in the bin ;)

Forest of Dean looks like Reform central...

Much closer than I thought you were - I'd always thought you works in Ashchurch (probably Moog) but lived Stroud.
We're walking distance from each other!

shocked not shocked

Anyway who want to take bet on the first Reform councillor scandal and when and where it will be?
before bedtime tonight
