I would describe myself center left but with strong socially liberal tendencies.

All Americans I know are artsy types or tech adjacent. But East-Coast liberals.

If another country or group of people were killing 100k Brits per year, would you genuinely care about the legality? As for your post, you clearly don't understand the deadliness of fentanyl. There is no legal or safe way to consume fentanyl. It's the equivalent of saying there is a safe way to swim in croc-infested waters.

Incidentally, fentanyl is used in a legal and safe way. It's used for pain relief in and out of hospital as a replacement for morphine.

As an aside, a few years ago I was in the top hotel in Luxor (Egypt) there was a group of rich Americans there and a couple of things made me laugh about them.

They all wore name badges with where they were from, weren't they capable of remembering names in their tour groups?

When they went to the bars they were miffed because the bars in Egypt didn't stock American brans, only worldwide brands.
