Which highlights it's also time to move onto road charging system. VED is based on vehicles emissions and successive governments have failed to Reinvest into road network leaving them in such a state that it will take decades to resurface them.
The majority of roads are funded by councils rather than central government.

Could be wrong but VED goes into a pot where it can be spent on anything. Ranging from schools to hospitals and some into road projects.

Don't they get grants by central Govt to fund roads? Council tax goes towards local services.
Hence why we have so many county councils going bust.

It does. I think I read it's annual £34billion raised from VED which goes into the general pot along with fines. So it's not enough to fund all road works etc and so rest of taxpayer is funding it.

Highways and they're usually county level.

Then it's about how much they raise from council tax and get money from central governement.

Israel closing their embassy here to the drlight of all. Reason being we recognise Palestine and support the South African in the ICJ.

Not pulling out of Spain, Egypt or Mexico though, the spineless *****.

Israel using the instability in Syria to expand it's settlements in the Golan heights. Their reasons are pretty bullshit, they claim to need to build a buffer zone but there is already a buffer zone. They are just advancing into the existing buffer zone and pushing the new one further back. It's a blatant land grab plain and simple.

Israel is basically going to war with Syria now and using the fact the new government isn't in place to deny that's what it's doing. I don't trust the rebels and think the extremism will come to the front again very soon but Israel is entirely the aggressor here.

You can only claim self defence for so long when you are the one initiating violence and all the fighting is in someone else's country. It's russian level of denial.

The IDF certainly appears more aggressive than defensive despite the D in it's name. We're seeing an emboldened regime thinking it is invincible and pursuing a policy of expansionism under the ruse of self defence.

I think America has now learned to stay out of the middle east and will only step in if Israel is in trouble. I would imagine there is extremely close collaboration between the Israeli and American militaries when it comes to Iran, it's proxies and Syria. The IDF is basically doing the work that America would have done itself previously under the likes of George W. It's much easier for Israel to do it given it's their hood and they can claim it's self defence or to keep the country secure etc. etc.

And if you don't believe us ask Mr Putin. He is also a stand up guy who treats his citizens with respect and dignity. We certainly don't kill or imprison our own citizens for speaking out against the regime.

A very balanced and well written piece on Ireland's attitude to Israel. The current conflicts have seen a rise in anti semitism, I have checked people on their language (things line people saying "what the jews are doing is terrible", rather than Israel) amd it can fall on deaf ears. But we're not an anti semitic country, more people would have contention with the catholic church than any strictly Jewish theologian or organisation. Zionism is widely despised.

The original post, while an interesting and shameful story, misses the mark that the poster is trying to make by a distance.

I had my first scroll through twitter in reaction to the Israeli embassy closing here and saw multiple cartoons that were essentially modern versions of what would have been run in the UK or New York early last century depicting Irish people as inferior monkey like beings. The racism in Israel is obvious, the claims they make about us are dubious at best.

On a lighter note.

If they are going to continue to carry themselves in the way they are, then good f**king riddance.

What station did the offended bus stop at this time?

In all it's glory.

Baroness Kidron, a crossbench peer who campaigns for children's rights online, said she had been forwarded the advert by concerned people "dozens of times."

She said she responded with a "scream of pain."

Oh yes, of course, a "scream of pain"

Ridiculous. There is someone needing relieved of duty for being too stupid.

Pity charities and their public representatives wouldn't focus more on the actual important things, rather than irrelevancies like this. It demeans the charity more than those they accuse!

Women against state pension inequality are complaining about the state pension age being set the same for men and women...

I know it scuppers some plans by delaying when they get the pension but it's literally making it equal and fixing a disparity that could not be justified. I'm struggling to see what the issue is other than losing a preferential system.

Its the lateness in their lives they were informed of the changes. I've never seen the time frame they were screwed to see if that was a justified argument.
