A Political Thread pt. 2

Why does Musk do that weird jump with his arms in the air after walking on stage. He's like the school nerd trying to be cool af but failing spectacularly.

Hate this, we should be doing everything we can to increase public transport use

It's giveth with one hand and taketh with another all because they want to be seen to be sticking to their manifesto promise of no increase to income tax, employee NI and VAT despite the so called £20bn black hole they found after taking office. That £2 bus cap was such a good initiative. Expect more WFH when that gets scrapped which hardly helps pubs and businesses that provide lunches etc. near office buildings.

I heard one economist say that the employer NI rise will likely result in lower pay rises next year.

Lift the cap on fuel duty and remove cheap bus fares.....smaller black hole.

Looks like we voted out batshit insane culture war Tories and voted in Cameron-esque austerity Tories again...

I think nobody who deviates from the policies that have got us into the mess we are in will be allowed anywhere near power by the higher ups who benefit from it.

When was the last time anyone got a rise above inflation?

Lower pay rises are just employers looking for excuses. Smaller business can be a bit more hand to mouth. But most people work for large businesses raking in profits.

Not sure if that was rhetorical or if you're referring to the public sector. Happens all the time in the private sector. Many companies give pay rises or bonuses based on company performance (profit) and employee performance. If Er NIC is up then the whole employee renumeration pot gets squeezed.

Private sector, not in my experience. Even with high performance thanks to Truss/Johnson I didn't get above inflation for the past 3 years. And with mid to high performance it didn't happen once in 15 years.

The only time it happens is either insensitive based bonuses (which many employees don't qualify for) or promotion based pay rises.

The public sector is even worse though.

If you believe the hype things will get better.

The fact we've got a party in government who are just a lighter shade of blue shouldn't be a surprise to anyone.

#bus fare cap going from £2 to £3 could be worse i guess.

I don't have a problem paying a bit more tax given the state of the country. But there better had be a tangible improvement in public services over the next few years otherwise they won't be getting my vote at the next election. I also don't expect to see any dodgy contracts being handed out given Starmer's promise to clean up politics and have a Government focussed on service to the people.

I do get that. I'm just disappointed with politics in general. What with the freebies stuff by Mp's and the PM. A budget that's likely to hit working people dispite this line of it's not Vat, national insurance etc. Unfortunately given the last few years lots of people would struggle with tax rises.

My employer (public sector) has to find a 11 million in savings over the next three years

I hope things do improve but we are cutting services and standards like crazy. Under Blair i was optimistic under Starmer not so much.

Reality is Blair inherited a good economic situation, Starmer has not.

Its gonna be a mix of tax rises, changes to borrowing rules to allow more (and how much), some savings being made and investment made elsewhere. The real question is how that is gonna sieve out.

11 million really isn't a lot in a 40 billion problem. Scrap one large project.

It's a lot when you are at the bottom of the barrell already after having to save 13 million over the last five years. Local government has been cut to the bone as it is. Proposed cuts include CCTV, public toilets, grounds maintenance etc. Once you take out statutory duties, the government's house building targets and so on. There really isn't much left to cut.

It's not as simple as getting every local authority to scrap a few projects.

If ever there was a doubt about Israel supposedly being the "good guys"... They are a bunch of shits too. Now to see if the Biden admin will go through with their promise to stop military aid to Israel. Israel definitely timed this to try to influence the election in the USA.

It's not that surprising considering how many terrorists they've found work for the UNRWA - almost feels more like a Hamas front at this stage, like when a bunch of unrwa workers were found to have taken part in Oct 7th and the UNRWA basically shrugged

It's separate from the UN, right? Like just linked by name? Can their work just be shifted to another organisation? Can the US military take over aid dispersal, like when they built that port?

I'm guessing it's sparked by this

Netanyahu and his far right Jewish supremacy cronies must be laughing their heads off in Tel Aviv. They have murdered tens of thousands of innocent Palestinians and created a humanitarian crisis that is going to result in a Muslim/Arab protest vote in America that will enable his far right mate to take the Whitehouse and let him crack on with his illegal expansion into the West Bank etc. You couldn't make it up.
