6 Nations and 6 Trophies

Up until recently I never realised how many trophies were contested for during the Six Nations Championship, and I am guessing several others don't realise to.

The first trophy to discuss is the latest addition to the Championship it the Guiseppe Garibaldi Trophy, which was introduced in 2007 and contested between France and Italy. However I am unable to find a picture of it as of yet...

The second trophy is the Centenary Qualch, this is contested between the celtic cousins, Scotland and Ireland.

The third trophy is the Millennium Trophy, this has been contested between England and Ireland since 1988,

The Forth Trophy is The Triple Crown, which has been contested for since 1883, between the four home Nations, however it wasn't until 2006 that a trophy was commissioned by Championship Sponsors RBS for the winners.

The Fifth Trophy is one of the most famous ones in the History of Rugby Union, The Calcutta Cup has been contested between England and Scotland since 1879.

The final trophy is the one which is most fought for, it is The Championship Trophy, which is awarded to the winner of the Championship, this was first awarded in 1993.

But suprisingly there is currently no Trophy for the Grand Slam Winners, this is rewarded by having bragging rights to being the best team in the Northern Hemisphere, sometimes Silverware isn't always required... Also the other suprise is that Wales don't compete for any additional Tournament Trophies other than the Triple Crown, and The Championship Trophy.

So it is Interesting to see the number of Trophies Each Nation is able to compete for:
England - 4 out of 6
Scotland - 4 out of 6
Ireland - 4 out of 6
Italy - 2 out of 6
France 2 out of 6
Wales 2 out of 6
(I think thats right)

The way it's going, everyone will eventually compete for a trophy in every international going. Look at the Tri nations an example, where every game competes for awards now.

It's strange to have a trophy yet not to have the presentation after each match. I think that 1994 was the last time the millennium trophy was presented and as far as I'm concerned I've never seen the trophy presented in the Scotland match.

Only been to one championship game between Scotland and Ireland, and didnt see the Quaich being presented, but then again thats because Ireland were too busy showing off the triple crown.

Out of interest, where do the names come from? (I know the Calcutta Cup is because it was presented to the RFU by Calcutta RFC, the main 2 are obvious and I would guess the Centenary Quaich Was introduced for the 100 years, but what about the others?)

Well Garibaldi was a famous Italian nationalist who played a large role in the unification of the country, hence the name of that trophy. Presumably the match with France was chosen as the fate of the two countries was closely linked during the 18th and 19th centuries.

The Millennium Trophy was introduced in 1988 when Dublin celebrated its Millennium so they marked it by bringing in the trophy for the English match.

There is one other award in the 6 Nations.

However, the winners don't want it and there isn't a trophy.

It's all bullshit.
Who cares about all the other pieces of scrap metal you can win.
There's only one we all want and there's only one that should remain.

I have to disagree with you there - as much as all Scots want to win the 6N ***le, the most important one to many is that we win the Calcutta Cup!

So you win the Calcutta cup and lose every other match and you end up a happy Scots fan at the end of the 6N?

I despise the Welsh fans who said that last year. "Well at least we beat England."
No, 5 losses out of 6 matches? That's a freaking disgrace.

You should never be content with just beating England.

eh, yes!

OK, I admit I would love it if Scotland won the 6N (or even just the triple crown) but unfortunatly we have to beat Wales and Ireland (and France) to do that.

So yes, I would be perfectly happy if we won the Calcutta Cup (obviously I hope we win more, but I will be content with that)

Then, for the sake of rugby in your country, be ever-grateful that the players and the coaches in Scotland wouldn't dream of thinking like that.

yeah most international matches between the big 9 nations of the world are a trophy match...eng vs aus is the cook cup or summit like that and they are many more

TBH, after yesterday its about all we have left to hope for - there is no way we can beat Wales, Ireland or Italy on the road if we play anything like yesterday - so can only hope the team are spurred on by the crowd to overcome England (and even thats a tall order)

I can see the Scots match against England being quite close, Scotland could nick it.

interesting, never knew so many were competed for. Seems quite a nice thing, but probably a bit over the top, but you can't tell new teams they're not allowed their own cups, surprised theres no england vs france one though

Imagine if there was a trophy awarded for the winner of best out of 5 matches between two teams half the way around the world from each other, now that's crazy.

They were introduced to encourage competition between a good and bad team surely, but the players don't seem to care any more, I say that after every six nations match, there should be a fireworks display and a grand trophy made of solid gold, which surely would mean more to the players, if that doesn't work, I don't know what will
