[2025 TRC] Argentina v New Zealand - 23/8/2025

Didn't stay up last night but watched the game back on catch-up this morning. The end score-line makes it look close - but let's be brutally honest, Argentina absolutely smashed the All Blacks in virtually every department of the game. If Los Pumas had just been a little more clinical then that would have been a 20 margin. ABs looked massively inferior on the night. Matera was a monster, Chocobares is absolute class and Santi Carreras had a good one after coming on so early for Albornoz. Montoya was everywhere as well. I know it’s petty, but there is a certain amount of enjoyment from seeing the All Blacks get done over properly.

I get that, but going from that to 'let's get rid of the NZ national anthem and start playing the dam Welsh one because we're heading down the same path as Wales'... well, that's a stretch.

I mean, a big part of of Arg joining TRC was for us to get better. And trust me, we've had our fair share of annus horribilis. We kinda knew what to expect by joining the best three rugby nations in history. But that was precisely the plan. We'll struggle, but that struggle, that level of competition is what will make us better. It stands to reason that by joining TRC the odds of Argentina eventually improving more than the other 3 were kinda obvious. Almost a given. We were worse to begin with.

Apologies for the insistence, but this is such an inconvenient truth. Your point was spot on.

Ask here, in this very forum, show of hands:
1) how many people here have watched ANY of the pacific nations cup games this week?
2) How many people plan on watching any pacific nations cup games this month (include September)?
3) How many people could watch them (TV or local pub) if they actually wanted to?
3) How many people even knew the pacific nations cup was actually happening right now?
4) How many people were aware of the pacific nations cup existence?

People vote for the likes of Bill beaumont and Robinson and then pretend to be shocked when this is what happens.

/end rant.
Apologies.

No

Would I enjoy watching some of these? Almost certainly. Am I now going to? No. Why not?

Like most people I’m most interested in what’s relevant to me. I’m English so that’s European, Tier 1 rugby.

Plus we’ve just come off a very long domestic season and I want a break. Over the summer I’m much more interested in cricket, athletics and cycling. I want to come back to the new season refreshed with enthusiasm.

Plus I simply don’t want to watch as much rugby as some seem to. I neither have the will (or Mrs VT’s goodwill) to regularly watch multiple matches per day.

So I’m an insular non-obsessive who uses their rugby budget in a fairly predictable way.

Havent read/seen nz media tbh. Is this sort of reaction the norm?

That’s a big reason why I like the All Blacks losing. The attitude of the NZ media towards teams like Argentina is just snobbish and arrogant and it reeks of “you shouldn’t be on the same pitch as us”. It absolutely stinks. Just because rugby is the national sport doesn’t give you a good given right to win everything - and what happened in the past is totally irrelevant to what’s happening now. NZ media are stuck in a bygone age and they still think the All Blacks are untouchable. Their god-like superiority complex is just nauseating.

Agreed, the sense of entitlement is insufferable. It's not 2015 anymore. Other teams are allowed to play great rugby.

I think some struggle to accept that the era of AB dominance is gone. Rather than being THE team to beat, they are now simply one among a group of teams who can all beat each other. England, France, SA, Ireland and NZ all have the capability to beat each other when on form with others like Argentina able to cause an upset.. Scotland and Australia lack the consistency to beat all of them regularly but may have the number of one of them, eg Scotland have beaten England a lot recently.

Don't worry Bozza is putting it together for England to dominate for the next 2 world cups 😉
