2023-2024 transfers

We had been interested in Smith too - so this is a step down from that hope.
At Bath, he'll be fighting Schoeman to be 2nd choice specialist LHP; which yes, is likely to be 3rd choice actual LHP (assuming Schoeman has another year on his contract).
I'd still rather Goodrick-Clarke, but not to be (am I right in thinking he's Exeter-bound?).

Who are Bath's likely leavers?

We don't know contract lengths, and suspect that not all renewals get announced, so the following is mostly guess work.

LHP Juan Schoeman / Arthur Cordwell - neither have been particularly impressive, but also neither are terrible. neither have signed a contract recently. Might lose one, might keep both. AC is 24.
HK Faiva may or may not be on a part-year deal, so leaving this summer.
THP Johannes Jonker is already confirmed out, Kieren Verden - as with AC above, with the exception that there's young depth behind him, and 2 solidly ahead. KV is 24.
LK Elliott Stooke / GJ Van Velze / Quinn Roux / Josh McNally. We've 4 locks confirmed for next year, we're probably looking to keep one of these 4. Rumours of Stooke going to Newcastle (having been offered an extension at Bath, but... money and a starting shirt). I would expect us to (try to) keep one of GJVV or Roux. TBH, I wouldn't even be all that surprised if we lost all 4.
BR JJ Tonks and Chris Cloete are as good as gone. Nahum Merigan has got to be in danger of being let go, depending on when his contract ends.

SH Tom Carr-Smith doesn't seem to be trusted, and the "signing" of Le Roux indicates that that's not about to change. Don't know when his contract ends, and at 21 it would be harsh to write him off.
FH George Worboys I can't see staying beyond his current contract, he's young and home grown, but he's already behind 2 younger home-grown options, and Linegar at U18 level is likely to overtake him pretty soon.
CE Max Wright is, quite honestly, lucky to still be with us - contract has been up for renewal as exactly the right times to stay on.
WG Ruiaridh McConnochie and Gabe Goss are both in danger, might be kept depending on incomers and wages.
FB Owen already left (we think), Gallagher already confirmed off.

U18s in the academy look like being culled ruthlessly, with only Connor Treacey graduating from the senior U18 section (Linegar's still got a year at that level, don't worry).

Also worth remembering, that Bath's huge squad includes several short term signings and the academy. The academy is the bit that's huge as we rebuilt things from the ground up starting 4 years ago, and essentially kept everyone we could.
As I count it, the senior squad is 48 players, including Faiva, Stooke, Du Plessis, Le Roux, Grace and Owen all signed mid-season (and Owen at least, having already left - we think). Getting that down to the proposed 35+12 is... not going to be tricky, despite all the "But Bath have more than 70 players in their squad".

Good player etc. But as a son of the North East it's just a shame that there wasn't a long term future with a vibrant Falcons.
He's also got himself a hurdle if he wants to be first choice in a backrow of Hill, Underhill and Barbeary. Although maybe with the injury history of all three of those, he seems this as a great opportunity.

Also I guess if he can get ahead of Underhill for Bath it would put in clear view of the England jersey

He'll get a lot of game time - JvG actually seems to walk the walk on rotation for his front-line players. He also likes to have 2 backrowers on the bench :(

Underhill is a game changer, he bangs harder than a Ricky Martin song, he's good at the breakdown and his carrying is underrated. He'll be really hard to overtake.

True, but if Underhill's fit that's a pretty big if. As is that.

He's a utility kind of size. Has he played at 6 / 8 or has he purely been at 7?
Has only started 7 at pro level. But with his height/weight there's absolutely no reason he couldn't play 6 at Prem level. Think Hill is comfortably the easiest to usurp out of him, Underhill and Barbeary too.

Well then I guess would playing at another club atm make that much difference?
It's a fair point but he has gone to the only club (bar Sale but they aren't really a real club without David Seymour), that has the starting England 7.

But then Quins have will Evans, saints have Pearson, tigers have reffel, Gloucester have their captain, Exeter have massive lumps, leaving only Bristol and sarries (can't think who they have).
Not much choice for a 7 at the moment then.

Think Earl is their first choice 7
Bristol wouldn't be a good fit for a player like Pepper either imo
