2023-2024 transfers

Well I think this project player thing is nonsense and instead of helping Ireland it's cheapening the jersey.

People are quick to call England out on it but make excuses for Ireland. Some consistency please, folks.
How much does it cheapen the jersey by? If I had to pick a number I would probably put it at 1/23rd, for the one project player who's appeared in the six nations for us so far this year. I never said we were innocent, I just find us being portrayed as the champion of the project player system idiotic.

Yeah, because a club doing that and a Union doing that are exactly the same.

And you might have noticed that a lot of people aren't exactly thrilled he's been capped.

It's you, Scotland and tier 2 countries that do it. Tbf, I don't know if you guys actually employ someone whose role it is to seek out potentially elligible players like Scotland do, but you are clearly the two worst offending tier 1 nations.

TBF to Lowe, lots of pundits/fans have tipped him as an outside bet for the ABs for a while, but with the likes of Savea, NMS, Naholo and Smith/Dagg (as wingers) in the mix, he's not had a look in.

I'm not going to defend Te'o - I agree he is a separate case ... but we all know the plan for Bundee Aki ...

As for Hughes, you wouldn't have to look very far through my posts to see my opinion there.

The IRFU didn't sign him though, Leinster Rugby did, we just need permission from them.

We're all sinners!

One of those examples which looks fishy on paper given how quickly he's made international rugby but as I've said before on here was no way planned like that. One of many punts Wasps took at a certain time and one of those that actually came off (many didn't). Hughes' rate of change as a player during those 3 years was immense.

Leinster signed Lowe, not the IRFU....... The IRFU has to approve signings, but it's Leinster who scouted him, courted him and got his signature. Our union doesn't make signings for us, although they do occasionally try and broker moves for young Irish players to other provinces where they'll have a better shot.
And hey even if he did play for Ireland then we'd be even on the maori front as you capped Teimana Harrison 5 times. And you can talk about our union doing this and that, but it was obviously made very clear to Te'o before moving to Worcester that he would be very soon earning a call up by your union, or was it his outstanding performances for Worcester that did that?
Once again, we're not innocent, but don't act like you're any better.

Cracking signing for Leinster. He'll greatly improve the outside back depth. Presumably it means Zane Kirchner is leaving and Rory O'Loughlin is being viewed as a centre rather than winger.

When this was first rumoured, I thought it was a bulls*** , made up story. I shouldn't have doubted the Irish Independent's David Kelly. It was a great scoop which no other journalist had even a whiff of. Will be paying more attention to him in future.

Just wonder will Kimmage kick off liie he did regards Stander. Dispite Stander saying he's here for life and has set up his home and invested his life and Jean-Maries to living in Limerick

He's probably conveniently focusing on cycling this week, as he should probably stick to for every week of his angry little life. Regardless of what you think of project players, the attacks on a guy who is firmly in the jersey, has done it proud and won't be leaving it is pathetic. He's an internet troll who happens to be given a platform to spew from because Lance Armstrong gave him legitimacy in cycling he earned through expertise, and legitimacy in rugby circles he gained from god knows how.

I have no idea where he sourced that from. Usually these rumors come from online forums which are sourced from more than shaky links to the organisations themselves or agents posturing for a pay day, but the forums were silent on this one. To be fair I suspected it was legit because it was such a random player to be linked with, not like your AACs or Ben Smiths. This guy is probably an upgrade on Kirchener who is probably on less money. Great signing.

I thought Ireland had some weird quota system about so many foreigners per position among the four teams
We do, but at the end of the day the IRFU have adapted a more case by case basis these days. There's only so many project players and NIQs we're allowed. The max for projects sits at 3 per team I think, with usually 1 or 2 NIQs not including short term cover signings who are pretty much unlimited in areas of need. We have guys like Toma on the books who has never actually played for us as he's only there for emergencies and wouldn't be allowed to play. The rules were loosened a lot for Connacht a few years back which triggered some vagueness around the system ever since. You can pretty much laugh off rumors like Ben Smith coming to Munster under the rules though as we have Chisolm (outgoing), Saili and Taute (at least one outgoing, maybe both), and he would block our other back three players. If a player is going to block Irish options, or if the IRFU is not happy with your production in that area, it won't be allowed

4 non Irish qualified players with one not being tied to another nation, the "project player", for Leinster, Munster and Ulster, Connacht do what they want for now and can afford to reject a guy like Madigan to play a 1 cap Springbok apparently! Not a perfect system by any means but it doesn't affect the integrity of the international game anymore (I'd argue less as we don't throw enough money around to end international careers) than the French or English club systems!

Taute is 95% signed on for 2 year deal

Darn. I was hoping if someone like Lowe was coming North he'd have felt more like an Italian with his dark Mediterranean looks :p

Curious timing as he has missed the boat for RWC 2019. A little disappointed that the IRU are so vocal about not having enough TV money to retain their outstanding native internationals but they are happy to splash the cash on foreigners.

I'm going to the papers with this.

Not really suprise. Even Chris Farrell interview with the 42 last week let it drop. He's been an influence on all our young backs and he's a model pro. Trains superb and always so positive. And he's bought in to us hugely

Who's the IRU?

Can't think of any outstanding Irish talent not playing on our shores. In fact Munster have dragged some lost sheep in recently.

Ahh no, I was hoping he stayed. Never seen a player buy in to the club so hard. Was a bit doubtful with the presence of Farrell, Goggin and eventually Arnold.
By the way McCarthy to Narbonne (my old French team) is confirmed. All the best Big Mike. I'll never forget you treating Etzebeth like a lawn mower.
