2022 World Cup - Qatar

I was thinking about the match up, this is the only game of note I can think of between the two, and it was only 2nd round so hardly a huge tie.

@Cruz_del_Sur might be able to recall a bit more history but there's far less of a rivalry here than either side eache team faced in the QFs if I'm not mistaken.

France no doubt Planning something on Messi. If Rabiot doesn't make it then a combo of Tchouaméni and Fofana, together with Griezmann, who has license to roam.

Was reading this as well on SGP's (opened 2012) was modelled on France's Clairefontaine, which opened in 1988. Whereas the French system produced success in 10 years in their home World Cup, England's still fall at the QF following a home final. Plus, no successor to Southgate should he quit. France have Zidane waiting should Deschamps wish to call it a day after the WC.

Oh the waiting continues…

If City get Bellingham they'll be a disgusting side. Surely enough to get over the CL hurdle.

Rumour is that his dad is doing all the negotiations for his son and wants him to join Liverpool. His bromance with Henderson at WC might indicate that is where he wants to go. They also won't ruin him like United have done to Sancho paying him silly wages reported to be 350k pw and would likely make him club captain post Hendo and VVD.

But his BD contract doesn't run out until 2025 and there is no buy out clause, unlike Haalands. Hence the crazy figures of up to 150m euros transfer fee being bandied around. However, the whole FSG sale (part of whole) this isn't totally 100% and also need to get into and stay in the CL, none of which is certain. So that's my worry that City will swoop him and sign him.

I hope if he doesn't come to PL then he goes to Real. A midfield of Tchouaméni, Bellingham and Camavinga/Valverde would be very exciting. But he won't be guaranteed a game and that's one of the reasons who joined BD in the first place.

If I was his advising him for commercial and football reasons I would tell him to hold tight until his contract runs out in 2025 and pocket the signing on fee and go on a free. He's only 19 and BD won't flog with as many games in the mean time and he can develop physically and technically his game for next 3 years.

V. Exciting player for England and future captain but whoever is the manager needs to create a midfield that works around him. Can't be all down to him. Just don't see that with a Phillips or Mount in place of Henderson.

Final question out of curiosity, who do Uruguay support when Argentina play? Friendly or bitter neighbours.
Not sure that's actually true. South American dynamics in terms of 'support' are rather complex, circumstantial and volatile. Even between Uruguay and Argentina. Or especially between us.
If i had to explain them it'd be:
- we all hate each other, maybe brazil being the exception outside Arg/Uru
- within that hate, Arg and Chi probably top the ranks but it depends. Bolivia and Peru probably dislike Chi more, rest probably us.
- Peru and Arg are ok with each other.
- we might not show it, continental brotherhood, etc.

I am making a gargantuan amount of hasty generalization, hope you understand that.

I for one do not want Uruguay to win. I consider them our derby, at par with Brazil, and if you corner me, i'd say a above them. I'm not with the mayority on THIS (uruguay being above bra in terms of who's our main rival). As much as i want them to lose, i have to respect their history and what they've achieved is arguably the greatest sporting accomplishments i've ever seen/heard/read about. Having said that, i find it laughable their current crest has 4 stars above it. Not only laughable, i find it pathetic.
In a way we're kinda like brothers. Sometimes Cain and Abel. They love to call us arrogant and we tell them there's a bit of sholder on that chip. That kinda thing. As societies go we're reasonably similar and share quite a few essential social and cutlural pillars.

I was reading somewhere that Brazilian fans preferring Argentina to win on Sunday and doubting it.

And also 👍 on Uruguay's 4 stars. I had to look it up and why when I saw it on their shirt.

There are a few other elements to it. South Americans have been proud of producing teams that could compete with European teams (which included south american born/raised players) at national and club level for quite a long time.
In a way we thought we were better, we just werent as rich enough (to keep the players) and we had arguments to back that up. But last time a south american team won the WC was, what, 2002? IAt clubs level 2012? That might be a factor. I'm guessing Messi being a quite likeable and rather uncontroversial guy plays a role too.

Regarding the 4 stars. I think it is beyond ridiculous. Dont get me wrong, what Uruguay did between 1924 and 1950 is unparalleled. This was already the most popular sport on the planet and they dominated the scene. With a country of 3 million. Not buts, no ifs, no excuses. I cant think of a single comparable feat in sports. Sure, some guys/teams have been dominant but
- for shorter periods
- wayless popular sports
- they were dominant in specific jurisdictions.

I dont think they get the credit they deserve. Not by a mile. But credit is not something you grab nor take for yourself. It has to be given to you. Putting 4 stars is exactly the opposite.
It not an easy subject to talk about when you discuss about it with uruguayans who know their footie history. They have their arguments. I find them ludicrous, insincere and almost laughbable, but they do exist.

Still, they can tell you Brazil wears yellow cuz of them. That's quite badge of honour.
There's a saying in spanish: no one can take away from you the songs you've already danced. Good lord they danced.

I found Uruguay too "european". Very different from Argentina and Brazil. Even people are very different there 🤔 from my experience,of course.
What do they mean, those 4 stars?
