[2021 Six Nations] England vs France (13/03/21)

I think you have to make a distinction between ruling class and normal people. Sure, Normandy was given to Rollo and his army as part of the settlement but there were normal French people in the region. Obviously, as well, 1066 came quite a bit after Rollo was given Normandy so it's a bit of a stretch to say William the Conquerer was a Viking and, even more of a stretch to say, all of his army were Vikings.

I love that we're spending this much time discussing the nationality of Guillaume Bâtard - in order to accurately dissect and completely factually bereft joke from 25 years ago

Either way I don't think he qualifies for the Viking rugby team under the Nordic Granny law and I'm fairly certain he doesnt have residency either, his father side are very French but his mothers are shrouded in mystery (or more likely French peasants)

Doesn't have residency!?!? It's only just got pushed to 5 years... pre-1066 it was probably like a week or something! :D

Of course after conquering England he'd qualify for us under residency rules but I'm unsure if at 43 by 1071 if he'd have been well past his prime. Although I'm unsure if anyone would tell a King when the had actual power that.

Eh....I think residency was more like "I took your country and therefore I'm a qualified resident" still Mr. The Conqueror did not take any of the Nordic countries therefore could not qualify under the "my axe is bigger than your axe" rule,

Anyway, getting this back on track. I'm pretty confident we'll score 5 or 6 tries in this one. We should keep Italy down to 1 or 2 but I wouldn't be surprised if there's only 5-10 points in it at HT.

Qualified for France on residency pre-Battle of Hastings though right?

Most people in England do not want to even consider it, but there were twice as many "English" citizens living in France and speaking ancient French than in England proper in the XIIth and XIIIth century. English speakers were actually a minority of the population and most official acts were in ancient French or latin. Richard "The LionHeart" actually could not even speak ten words of English, he only spent six months of his life there and was much happier on the sunny side of the channel!
So actually, it is the whole population of XXIst century England that actually qualifies under residency!
So if you don't mind, we'll take Sinclair, Itoje, Simmonds, Mallins and Curry in the French selection for saturday, you can keep the others...

You don't need to pilfer any more second rows thank you very much...

Bernard Le Roux will not be there, so we have a right to pick another one. Maro Itoje might not sound as french as Bernard Le Roux, but since he is a British citizen living in England, he qualifies for the French team on historical grounds.
I am sure he'll love it, free waffles every day and the French media are much nicer

Sounds delightful!

It does not explain why quite a few English or Welsh trained players qualify for Italy, but that must be another story altogether...
The only waffle shop in Gloucester closed down - it's why so many Gloucester players play in Rome now
