[2020 Six Nations] England Squad

It does strike me as odd though that so many people are looking at a tournament 4 years away and decrying a perceived lack of prepping for it when the last WC has only just finished and there are 4 6N tournaments, 3 summer tours and 3 sets of Autumn Internationals to be won before then! o_O) :))

My only real issue is with 9, though possibly 8 as well, because it seems those positions are overly reliant on 1 or 2 people and without them you're suddenly left with very inexperienced players, who while good, need to prove themselves at international level. If we had a back up who was on 20 caps or even 10, then they have to potential to get over 50, which then puts them as an experienced player. At the moment if you were to pick a new 8 or 9 it would be impossible for them to get 50 caps and that's if they played every game.

Other positions seem to at least have some players with some experience to build on, but those 2 are really worrying and we don't want it to get to the point where Eddie's hand is forced by results or injury and then realise it's left us screwed and without experience in 2 key positions.

Relatively happy with the front row our top 3 looseheads picked although interesting to see Marler included after his retirement. I thought he was just helping out at the World Cup because Mako was injured. Nice to see that it's been beefed up a bit with the inclusions of Stuart and Williams. Hopefully everyone gets a chance. Dunn is a surprise but Singleton isn't playing well atm and Dunn is 4th choice anyway and in better form. Would have liked to have seen Thacker but I don't think he is Eddie's type of Hooker.

Second Row is interesting with 6 inclusions. Lawes must be being used as a Blindside which I don't really mind has performed well for Saints there. Itoje, Kruis and Launchbury were obvious picks Moon is left field but I like it tall and a brute too so I hope he gets a chance. Ewels is probably the one I question with this though has been injured and other players certainly deserve the pick like Isiekwe and Jonny Hill.

Back Row is really tricky because I like all of the players that have been picked. Curry, Underhill are no brainers. Ludlam covers the entire back row and has played well for England. Earl has been on fire this season for Saracens and Hill is one of the most complete blindsides we have had in a while. We could have easily though had a proper number 8 in the squad without dropping anyone. It such a stupid decision to not involve an 8 it really is. Hill, Curry, Earl, Ludlam aren't specialist 8's. It could come back to bite Eddie on the bum.

Halfbacks is another position where I don't really get what Jones is thinking. Youngs is so very inconsistent and probably won't be around for the next world cup. Granted the youngsters aren't ready yet and Robson isn't his greatest form atm but I would have thought Spencer would have been the better pick. Heinz I can get tbh he has been playing well and the youngsters aren't ready yet. Good to see Mitchell involved though. Farrell and Ford again are obvious choices and i'm actually happy with Umagas call up a good distributor and playing well for Wasps. It's very harsh on Marcus Smith and Joe Simmonds though.

Can't say much about the centres tbh Tuilagi and Joseph are our best available centres, Slade is injured and Marchant in super rugby so a good chance for Dingwall to get experience. I do think there are better options ie Sam James, Sam Hill or other youngsters I would have liked to have seen like Luke James and Ollie Lawrence but i'm not disappointed. I would like Devoto to get a run at 12 too as he is the closest we have to a specialist 12 atm.

Backs look good to me Thorley may not be that high try scorer but he is a hard physical runner which helps with Coka and Nowell injured. May is just May quick and good under the high ball, Watson is that tricky winger who can make something out of nothing. Furbank hopefully will be our answer to our 15 problem and playing well for Saints. Disappointed with Daly but tbf who else do we have at 15 - nobody.

Overall i'm happy with the side but two changes add Dombrandt and Spencer for Youngs.

Pretty much agree with that tbh. Ford/faz is pretty much nailed on so Umaga is there because EJ has obv seen something in him. I also wanted to see lawrence as an apprentice player, he has the attributes and skills to be great but not the experience for a call up to the actual squad. What is josh hodge? Wing or FB?

Also to add to the omission list of players I would have wanted to see given a go, Max Malins.

Hodge is mainly a wing but is also a FB so could be bred for either. He is also a very good young talent.

Is he the U20 goal kicker who had the 100%tournement record?

Yes, 24 from 24 and also scored two tries. However with Freddie Steward, Noah Heward, Joe Carpenter, Gabe Hamer- Webb all in the u-20 it seems Hodge will primarily be used as a winger even though he seems more adapted to playing Fullback.

Reasonable stats

Only seen carpenter play once but he didn't look out of place at senior level despite being 18(/19?)
Made a fantastic try saver late on but potentially tore a hamstring in the process (scan this week) so he might be out of the u20 6N

I think Mark Atkinson can feel a little hard done by, but I guess it was a shootout between him and Devoto as a big 10 turned 12, and despite Devotos lower amount of game time this system he's been involved in the EPS before so the coaches know him better/he knows the systems more

Still think Ford tends to panic when not front foot ball and defenders get close, whereas Faz more consistent in all areas, not as high potential, but not the lows. Allow the players around him make the right runs and he will pick the right player.
With this squad would like to see a midfield of Faz, Devoto and Joseph, with a back 3 of May, Daly and Watson, with Watson at 15

Malins has a broken foot, but he has definitely looked good at FB this season when given the opportunities. One for the summer tour hopefully.

Given that we open in Paris, I don't imagine we'll see a huge amount of change to the starting lineup from the WC Final, save for the injury-enforced change in the back row and the usual 10-12-13 combo shifts. With Slade injured, does Eddie push Devoto to 13 as a like-for-like swap (with Faz-Manu at 10-12), or does he stick with Ford-Faz-Tuilagi, or does he go hammer and rapier style in the midfield and put Manu and JJ next to Faz? If he wants to play a more defensive game against France, the latter would probably be the strongest combo, but there would be less playmakers than usual in the backs. Or does he pull a big surprise and go for Devoto at 12 between Faz and one of Manu or JJ. Or floor everybody and put Dingwall in there?

I really hope we see Farrell - Manu - Joseph at some point, theoretically it's our best 10/12/13 (IMO)

Josh Hodge is a FB who can play equally well on the wing. He has been used on the wing for the England age grades and he got his first competitive start for us on Sunday v Leeds and scored and played very well.

The lad is going to be a superb full back, though sadly i probably wont see him in a falcons shirt for long as the big boys will be circling.

He has insane pace, fantastic side steps , he is a ball of energy, a surprisingly strong defence and he's a goal kicker. Even looks comfy under the high ball. He just needs a few pounds on which he will naturally put on as he's only young.

I've said before that I don't see any point in apprentices.

For all his undoubted talent he's fundamentally still only an academy player at a Championship club.

He will make a mark, and probably rapidly, but right now there's no justification in having him anywhere near the squad. All it does is heap unnecessary expectation on him.

Im not sure OH.
He's getting an idea of expectations, training intensity, etc etc at this level. Im not sure it puts any further expectations on him that are not there already. I would say young winger Adam Radwan who is with us, is under more pressure to his consistently outstanding performances and tries.

Are these the only Apprentices through the 6n. Surely not, wont there be more as the 6n goes on.

I do find it funny looking at people's reaction to Eddie saying he will make this England team the greatest ever.
Especially from the other home nations fans/pundits.
