[2015 RWC] Warm Up Match: England vs Ireland (05/09/15)

I'm mostly agreed with MojoPin there - I just think Wales need their tight five patch to work before they can start dreaming. The decline of Adam Jones hurt them bad.

I don't think May is ahead of Nowell, and I'm not sure Launch is third choice lock. I don't think this is necessarily a first choice side. Seriously worried about the kicking game, they are going to pummel our back three with up and unders (God I wish we had Roko) and all we have in response is aimless kicking with no chase. A massive test for Ford here, he could play his way to first choice in the tournament or equally he could play his way into the bench.

The breakdown is also going to be key, they breasted is there in the 6N and I haven't really seen anything since to suggest we have improved there. They'll pepper is with high balls and smash us at the breakdown, and we'll struggle with both.

That said, I can't see us winning by less than twenty without some serious Celtic cheating.

England vs Ireland - 5/9/15 - World Cup Warm Up Match

Why are you so negative may I ask??

Not negative. Realistic. Can you really be that confident that Ireland are going to win at Twickenham? A game which England HAVE to win, and we don't necessarily have to.

The game against Wales at the weekend, which I was at, was a clear indicator that Ireland have a lot to work on. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't good either. We don't need to peak for another 6 weeks or so, so it's grand. England need to peak now, so they'll go out all guns blazing for this one. We're just looking to get the rustiness gone.

In my humble opinion I think England and Ireland have not any chances of winning the RWC. I think the Webb Ellis returns to the south hemisphere

*Checks join date* Holy **** I've been on here that long? *Joins in tutting*

Agree that to a greater extent than Ireland England need to hit the ground running, but based on France's apparent resurgence, you're going to need to perform strongly against them - if you don't, and you lose, you'll be facing New Zealand in the quarters!

Also, if only for team confidence and unity I think you need a performance going into the world cup.

I much prefer the look of this England team . If the line out doesn't work with Lawes, Parling, Wood and Robbo as options then Tom Youngs is going to have to go . We won't get out of the group with a line out like we had 2 weeks ago ...

Will be good to see Barritt playing between 2 genuine creative players in Ford and JJ and we look like we have a back 3 that can deal with the up and unders Ireland like to put in . Hopefully May and Watson can get up the field and put some pressure on the Irish on some high balls

Looking forward to seeing Barritt sure up the midfield with some good hits, from a far, the midfield does look more balance with Barritt sitting between the two flare players, time will tell..

Your right Ireland have an extremely good up and under game, when playing the big teams in tight matches, Bowe and Kearney are some of the worlds best kick chasers, maybe why May has acctually started this game, because of his height. I think SL has maybe been a bit more clever with his wing selection, knowing the Irish will do this, makes it silly to play Nowell, with his height obviously not being his greatest attribute.

I'm not sure about that, May is taller but Nowell is significantly better in the air.

Really, I don't see what Lancaster is thinking, Nowell has clearly performed the best of all the wingers recently AND is a Lancaster favourite AND is the best horses-for-courses selection against Ireland (when catching is going to be crucial). That's partly why I suspect this isn't quite supposed to be a full 1st XV.

It's Lancaster's last look at May, I think. Nowell has always been a favourite of his and with his performance against France probably sealed it, so May gets a last chance to oust Watson.

Of the three, May's also taken the longest to adjust to international rugby (well, half-adjust) so would probably gain more from the cap than Nowell. He's also perceived as the weakest in the air so there's no better test; if he can keep his head against Ireland he might finally have added some of the top two inches.

The only other reason would be his speed on the turn, which we saw against France at Twickenham, which covers the corner grubber much better than Nowell.

May is our only left winger, isn't he?
I mean Lancs will use the others there, but isn't May the only one that's played there before?

I think if the management were considering Nowell, they'd have looked at him more. Only one match of these warm-ups played, the other two he wasn't even on the bench. May, by comparison, will have started all three.

So, all the press hyping and *****e that was running around after the first Wales game has been shown to be a load of hot air.

We're a pretty good team. But a long way from best in the world.

Still and all, if we (+imports) cannot put it up to this (exudingly exquisitely arrogant) Saxon bunch (+imports), then we'd be safer calling it a day and bringing the squad back to make sure we get the spuds gathered in good time this autumn... I wonder does Risteard O'Strauss or Gearoid Payne know how to run a spud picker?
