[2015 RWC] Pool B: South Africa vs. Scotland (03/10/2015)

Not particularly accurate at all, they're missing Finn Russell & john hardie through injury, but Blair Cowan is a good fetcher, and workmanlike around the field so he's a good replacement. A couple of players are being given a rest after 3 games in 10 days, but in all honesty they're not the big stars of the team, and the replacements are strong and fresh. So i wouldn't call this a weakened team, they're probably the best team Cotter could put out given that if players are tired, their performance will drop, and that's why they've been replaced. Second-string is not accurate at all however, when the likes of the Gray brothers, Scott & vernon are a physical partnership (though Bennett has been rested), Visser has come onto the wing but again, he played much of the six nations if I'm not mistaken, and Hogg is also still involved

Cool! I see, thanks man.

There's just 3 changes to the starting line-up from last week. This team had more than enough time together, plus the win against Samoa is a massive confidence booster. We didn't give away any tries.

Plus, it's only Willem Alberts and Jan Serfontein that hasn't played any rugby for the Springboks in this WC yet, in the 23. I think the team is a lot more settled.

I wish I were as confident as you. You say only 2 of the 23 hasn't played in this RWC yet. I say Vermeulen has only had 1 start, DDA has nly had 1 start, Pollard, FdP, Bismarck, Kriel, JPP, Le Roux, De Jager all only had 1 start. I wouldn't count that as much at all and take into account Vermeulen, Alberts and Serfntein are all back after long injury lay-offs, Fourie du Preez as well, he has had only the Samoa game and then how long ago did he play? Same with Alberts, Vermeulen, Serfontein hell even Malherbe is desperately short on game time due to on and off injuries. The front row and Louw are in questionable form (Louw and Jannie in particular not in top shape back from injury).

Where was I?.. O, yeah so, sure, the team is largely the same as against Samoa and the changes are good ones on paper at least but they've only had the one good game this RWC and the other game we'll not mention so one just simply cannot take that as a measure or base for trying to extrapolate anything.

That said I am quietly confident in the selections and Owens is not the type of ref to determine outcomes. Sure, anyone makes mistakes but generally Owens keeps it pretty tidy. Just saying we shouldn't expect to beat Scotland by the types of margins coming out here. Anything more than a win is a bonus.

I posted my prediction in the England Australia match thread so I may as well also post it here. I am predicting a close first half with a final scoreline of 22-12 to the Boks.

Last year Ireland also fielded a supposedly second string side and the Boks got klapped, I hope they will not fall into the same trap.

I've seen some articles saying that the Scotland team is mostly second-string players? How accurate is that?

VC has picked a team reflecting perhaps that this is our 3rd WC match in 11 days . Hardie and Russell are still injured and Maitland and Bennett rested . The inclusion of 6'5" Vernon in the centre indicates a shoring up of the mid field against a different style opposition . Strength in depth with Hidalgo Clyne getting a run out at 9 and the impressive Blair Cowan added to the back row . Not what we expected but chess player VC has made a number of good moves to date and probably enough to secure this one .

This is pure class from Jannie du Plessis, honest and upfront but so respectful... I may not know much about Springbok rugby or him, but man do i have respect for him! Can't wait til tomorrow, should be a cracker! Beware the tactical nous of Vern Cotter, he's no slouch in a chess match

Exactly, a backline full of fullbacks. +1

I doubt though we'll be taking anyone lightly after we got Pearl Harbored.. I hope.

No the shock loss against Japan is still fresh in their minds, so they should hopefully be focused for this game. If they can play with the same intensity as last week, they should win comfortably( I hope). Come on Boks you got Pearl Harboured, now it's time for Hiroshima!

Seeing as we're going for historical references if Scotland win today would the boks have been William wallace'd?

Let's be honest William Wallace lost in the end didn't he I wouldn't call being hang draw and quartered a win personally.

Then again SA isn't England I guess.

Maybe Lethal Weapon 2.

So if Scotland win it would be like a crossover of brace heart and lethal weapon 2

Your right but Scottish have to have something cling to the only other thing they've got is Andy Murray ;)

That's Danny Glover'd BTW
