and they have named their squad (which includes Smith) to go to SA http://www.superxv.com/41484/1/hurricanes-name-touring-squad-for-south-africa#.UwPF4Hz2-70

Guess that answers all questions.

By the looks of that Hurricanes team named for week 2 (sorry can't find a link for it at the mo, although just seen it in the paper), they are really gonna need Conrad!! I'm a bit worried about the Canes to be honest. I thought they would go OK this year but with Shields and Vito out for a bit they may well struggle early!

I think it says a bit about people wanting to fast track him into the All Blacks when his coach doesn't have enough faith in him to muscle up against the South African sides yet.

The humidity is likely a factor in his non-selection, regardless. The Hurricanes will have to play a tight game because the ball will be very slippery, and that doesn't really suit Savea's play style.
