2014 Super Rugby: Sharks v Hurricanes (Round 2)

I like the fact we kept the same side. I want rotation like the CC later on, but we have a bye week next week so no risk of burning players out yet.

Yeah, why change when it's working?

I think the Sharks are going to be even more brutal than they were last week against the Bulls. That pack of theirs are frightening!! I think it's going to be a long day for the 'Canes

Well, it's a balance. Rotation worked well in the CC, and I hope we keep it up. But this early on on the season we risk more harm than good switching things up while players get back to form and fitness, especially with the bye next week. After that I'll look for a few more changes.

I was reading somewhere (sorry, can't find the article now) that Mark Hammett has tried to pick a big loose forward trio, to try to counter the physicality/what the Sharks pack did to the Bulls last week.

This Stuff article also tries to explain why Ardie Savea isn't on the bench http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/rugby/super-rugby/9746737/Hurricanes-prepare-for-the-South-African-heat

I saw that explanation by Hammett, and it doesn't make the slightest bit of sense. Why do you need someone who can cover 6,7, and 8 from the bench when your starting players offer versatility? Lam also covers 6 & 8 comfortably. Levave also covers 8. Thomson also cover 6 (and lock). Mark Abbott and Mark Reddish both have a lot of experience in the loose-forwards (Reddish covering 6, while Abbott has played both 6 & 8). Basically they have more cover in the loose-forwards than they could possibly need. The truly bizarre thing though is Savea is probably more versitle than Hill. Savea has a lot of experience at 8 at ITM Cup level, whereas Adam Hill has played almost exclusively at 7 during his short ITM career (apart from a single start at 7 a couple of seasons ago when Otago was playing dual opensides). Whether Savea is included in the 23 doesn't really both me (it is just the Hurricanes ;) ), it just shows that either Hammett knows nothing about rugby or is simply talking crap.

Anyways... Hard to see the Canes winning this unless it becomes a very expansive game given the Sharks have the better forward pack. The Canes need to get the ball to Julian Savea in a bit of space, as Ndungane won't be able to catch him...

Hey, no bad mouthing "the Hammer", he's on a very important under cover mission for the Crus ... are, never mind ... seriously though, I have to agree, it seems the perfect time to me, to be playing Ardie - their established loose forwards are injured, he's away from home, so he wouldn't have the hometown pressure on him, and, as you say, the Canes hopes of winning seem to be in playing an expansive game, and running the big Sharks forwards around the field.

The humidity factor end Feb is something that will negatively impact the Canes if they try are run them off the park.
This could get ugly for the Canes tonight.

In terms of fantasy rugby this is my banker have Mvovo, Steyn, Lambie, Pernanra, Coetzee and Mtawarira.

Judging by the Brumbies game the White factor was missing there.

Reckon Sharks will win by 12

Gonna watch as much of this as I can, but will be in and out of the room. Still have to catch the two that aired here last night (I decided to sleep for a change). Hopefully this will be a decent match, but with the Sharks already leading 10-nil I'm fearing the blood's already in the water...

EDIT: Perhaps I spoke too soon - 10-6 now just a minute out of halftime.

EDIT: Or maybe not. Sharks leading 21-9 at 66 minutes.

Two tries to zero, another win, I'll take it. Now we sit back and have two weeks to watch the other teams develop. I'll do a more comprehensive report after the other SR match.

Why Hurricanes can't take the leap of quality? Every year is the same. They have a good back-line: TJ Perenara, Conrad Smith, Beauden Barrett, Julian Savea and Cory Jane. What is the main problem? Their front row? Back row? or both?

Well to be fair I never had them pegged to win this match. Missing some very important players and the conditions doesn't suit them.

The problem with the Canes is their inept management. To think how long Dave Rennie was passed over...
