Cheetahs made 3 changes for Chiefs clash:

A bit of a strange line up for the Chiefs this weekend:

Chiefs: Gareth Anscombe, Tim Nanai-Williams, Andrew Horrell, Tom Marshall, Asaeli Tikoirotuma, Aaron Cruden (c), Augustine Pulu, Liam Messam (c), Sam Cane, Michael Fitzgerald, Brodie Retallick, Matt Symons, Ben Tameifuna, Rhys Marshall, Paulisi Manu. Reserves: Nathan Harris, Jamie Mackintosh, Josh Hohneck, Liam Squire, Tanerau Latimer, Tawera Kerr-Barlow, Anton Lienert-Brown, Mils Muliaina.

Fitzgerald gets a start, but on the blindside. Presumably to help out with the woes of the Chiefs lineout? This means Messam moves to 8 and Thompson drops from the 23. Cane and Latimer also swap places. Pulu, Nanai-Williams and Anscombe all come into the starting team, swapping with Kerr-Barlow, Lienert-Brown and Muliaiana respectively, who all drop to the bench. Squire and Harris also come onto the bench, Schwalger has gone home due to his earlier eye injury (and Afeaki has also gone home now, due to his concussion worries).

The Chiefs are currently averaging 7 changes a week, last year they made on average 5.18 changes, which was the most in the competition for any team.

Thanks for the lineup, mate. Liam Messam at number eight? Interesting...

The 3 back changes are ok with me, backline still looks mint and bringing TKB on at half time and having him play out will be great, after 30 mins of field time you expect him to be fresher than most of the Cheetahs forwards and his runs around the ruck could be devastating.

Read this morning that Fitzgerald at 6 and moving Messam to 8 to help counter the rolling maul and strengthen set piece.

Sorta feeling our one true weakness is a #2.

Quite excited about this weeks game.

Oh look it's going to be one of those games..
A clanger of a TMO error gives the Cheetahs their second try... This shouldn't be happening at this level, at any level, with the technology they use.

I always thought you had to be 5 meters out to take a quick tap... Evidently that is not the case.

Edit: just looked up the rules, you do have to take the tap from 5 meters! Absolutely horrendous reffing. Bloody embarrassing.

Regardless absolutely terrible refereeing from Joubert, which is hardly surprising given how terrible he is most weeks. I don't see how this guy can be considered one of the best referees.

37-36...Chiefs are catching up!

In a way I feel bad for the Cheetahs - they haven't have a good season so far and a win right now would probably do them a world of good.

I've missed a big chunk of the match - at about what minute did this happen so I can go back and check it out?

I'm not sure really, it's their second try, maybe fifteenth minute?

Anscombe has had his worst match for the Chiefs in this game. Poor skills and terrible decision making.

Yeah, that was a bit of a surprise. Feel bad for the Cheetahs, but they just ran out of steam defensive-wise, I think.

The third Cheetahs try in the 35th minute came from an illegal tap.

Their second try was off a knock on, but the TMO didn't look at all the angles, so the viewers saw it after the try had been awarded.

I found the second try - do you mean the knock-on which they only seemed to look at closely AFTER the TMO told Joubert the try was okay? If so, that was a big error on the TMO's part, but I can't blame Joubert since he was relying on an accurate assessment from the TMO. Same with the forward pass. The pass is forward, but the player he was throwing to was behind him and he ran into the pass. Maybe they were just looking at where the players were and not the line of flight of the ball.

I dunno. I think the TMO thing is creating more of a problem. Sometimes the refs can't see the playback - not that that's an excuse, though. Joubert obviously suspected both a knock-on and a forward pass (to ask for it to be checked), and yet - instead of going on his gut - he relied on the TMO. I liked it better when the TMO was mostly used just to see the grounding of the ball, and not all this going back 20 phases to see if someone made an error ten minutes before (a bit of hyperbole there, but you get the idea).

When I first started watching the game there was a lot more input from the touch judges on things like foul play, forward passes, and other such things. Now they don't seem to do anything except mark were the ball went out, while the ref consults more and more with the TMO. It seems that most of the controversial calls aren't when the ref makes a decision on his own, but when the end decision is left to the TMO.

Okay - watched the tap. That's a hard call - Joubert was on the 5 meter line, and Pretorius was maybe half a meter off on his back foot, but he kicked it facing Joubert - so the tap itself (not his body position) was about at the 5 meter line. Not sure how technical it has to be - the kick from 5 meters, or the player at 5 meters (which, if he was facing forward, would mean the tap is actually closer than 5 meters...are you confused yet?).

I think that would be a hard call to make, and in the end even if he was actually on the 5 meter line with both feet, the try still would have been made because the Chiefs totally let their guard down.

The 2nd try pass went forward 10 metres from where it was thrown. That just cant be drift.

The penalty tap try was harder to see on the highlights clips I watched, I managed to freeze it a split second after the tap and he clearly looks in front of the line from what I saw, although the Chiefs went to sleep and let him get over the line. Couldn't quite get the tap itself but was out by milliseconds.

Chiefs did good to get another draw and it keeps them at the top of the NZ conference by 4 points.

Didn't see the game yet, only the the result. Feel a bit disappointed that we got a draw against the Cheetahs. Luckily we're still on top but we really need to find our A-game if we want to prolong the ***le.

No-one can say Chiefs games are boring huh? It was pretty much a mirror image of last weeks game. Unbelievable! I really think the Chiefs are still the team to beat this year. Once they get a bit more of a settled team, and particularly when they can put out their top team, i.e. get the loosies sorted and the midfield I think their D will really improve. Their attack is worth 30+ points most nights so all they need to do is defend and they win.
