2014 European Nations Cup Division 1: Round One. 01/02/14

Spain should get a decent stadium in order to improve the attractiveness of their product. Teresa Rivero seems like a nice stadium in Madrid.

That stadium belongs to Rayo Vallecano, right?

Cluj Stadium looks like a good option, hopefully it's gonna be full!!!

I don't know. I've heard that they pay no rent but the stadium administrators get all the gate money, but I don't know if it's true.

Normally, local authorities consider a great honor to have the national team play in their city, so I don't think the rent amount is an issue.

If so, it is very reasonable in terms of the promotion of rugby. At this stage it is important not to make money, and interest more people rugby. Your federation is doing very right thing.

LG, note that the 3rd place team will play wither the 1st place squad from 1B or Netherlands in a one-off to determine the repechage spot...right now, Netherlands will play either Germany, Moldova (the in-form team of 2013 from this division), or Poland (very near elimination) for the right to play the 1A 3rd place.

Here's the updated look at 1B:
Germany 8 matches, 29 pts, 2 matches left (vs. Czech Republic, at. Sweden)
Moldova 7 matches, 25 pts, 3 matches left (at. Poland, vs. Ukraine, at. Czech Republic)
Poland 8 matches, 21 pts, 2 matches (vs. Moldova, at. Ukraine)
Ukraine 8 matches, 19 pts *ELIMINATED
Sweden 9 matches, 14 pts *ELIMINATED
Czech Republic 8 matches, 6 pts *ELIMINATED

Moldova at Poland obviously a big game, first game of the 2014 season for 1B. Moldolva won by 4 last year (2013), and have been gaining better results as 2013 wore on. They won all 5 matches in 2013, with bonus points. Unfortunately for Moldova their loss in November 2012 to Germany is their downfall. Even though they beat Germany this season with a bonus point, they lose out on the points differential tie breaker (Germany over two matches outscored Moldova 47-44), so tying on table points is no good for Moldova, they must bonus point win and/or hope Germany slips up against the two weakest squads.
Netherlands vs. 1B winner is scheduled for May 10, 2014 in Netherlands, but as with the IRB/FIRA, that date could change. That winner vs. 1A 3rd place hasn't been given a date yet, only 2014. That ultimate winner will gain the repechage spot.

Yeah I completely overlooked/forgot about that, generally speaking that game is mostly a formality though with the gap narrowing slightly the 3rd place Division 1 side will have to avoid any major slip up's perhaps taking the Qualifier not seriously enough might be a prospect for someone like Germany. This would likely open the door to the other repechage teams in other continents if this came to pass with the most likely beneficiaries being Uruguay and the African side.

Edit: I'm too tired, don't think what I just posted made much sense I'll edit tommorow.

Edit Edit: @ Whiteman thank you for stopping by we'd love to have a German perspective but could you please post in English, as it allows me(and the rest of the staff) to moderate easier as well as helps the majority of our users. I don't mind occasional paragraphs in another language or quotes etc. as long as I know what language they are in but an entire post is too much.

No worries, I felt like a zombie typing my little post. It's pretty much shaping up to be Germany/Moldova vs. Russia. Although if Russia was able to build a nice gap last season nothing says another team can't do it this season. As mentioned above, Moldova certainly seems to be the 1B favorite now that they have been able to tap all of their best players and beat Germany this season 30-15. As for the playoff, while Russia is certainly the overwhelming favorite, anything can happen! Especially if Russia is forced to go on the road like FIRA/IRB has been making the higher division team do. While certainly not remotely close to the same scale/talent, India a couple of years ago (who won A5N Div 3) nearly beat Thailand (A5N Div 2 winner) at a neutral site. Hell, we saw Madagascar take down Namibia (although it more resembled Namibia A/B) at home in extra time! And by no means has Russia been spectacular in my opinion!

Did anyone hear details of Belgium's two test series at Hong Kong? I did see the scorelines and noted they had lost both games fairly narrowly, does anyone know if it was a strong side or any other details, I wasn;t going to read too much into those games until I heard something more about them.

Belgium had most of its top players, although they were missing kicker extraordinaire Alan Williams (reasons unknown, mostly likely club since it was outside the window). Most of the French based players were released. Hong Kong were playing with some different combinations but had almost everyone available.

First test team sheets:
Hong Kong Squad
1. Leon Wei 2. Tom Bolland 3. Steve Nolan 4. Bill Brant 5. Paul Dwyer* 6. Nick Hewson (captain) 7. Matt Lamming 8. Pale Tauti 9. Andrew McCulla* 10. Chris McAdam 11. Salom Yui Kam Shing 12. Lee Jones 13. Jake Phelps* 14. Rowan Varty 15. Tom McColl
Reserves: 16. Alex Harris 17. Jack Bennett 18. James Cooper* 19. Josh Li* 20. Alex McQueen 21. Jamie Hood 22. Ben Rimene 23. Andrew Bridle
*First Hong Kong caps

Belgium
1. Norman Wende 2. Bastian Vermeylen 3. Maxime Jadot 4. Pierre Hendrickx 5. Cyrille Nana Njilem 6. Andrew Neill 7. Thomas De Molder (captain) 8. Julien Morelli 9. Julien Berger 10. Christopher Brown 11. Jens Torfs 12. Guillaume Piron 13. Dirk Haghedooren 14. Nicolas Meeus, 15. Sebastien Guns 16. Julien Massimi 17. Alain Miriallakis 18. Andre Kouemou 19. Matthieu Verschelden 20. Bertrand Billi 21. Hendrik Brouwers 22. Guillaume Brebant 23. Michael De Molder
Coach: Richard McClintock Manager: Jean-Pierre Finet

Belgium was up 5 at the half and lost 28-17 (HK did get try + conv at last play). Apparently ref was whistle happy, tons of pens (7 pen goals for HK in that test, 4 for Belgium).

Second match ended with a HK drop goal at full time after they ran off 20+ phases, a lot inside the 22. This despite Belgium scoring the match's only tries. HK coahc felt that HK didn't play well and seemed to feel like his team was lucky to walk out 2-0 instead of 1-1.

Second test review: http://www.hkrugby.com/eng/news/3670.php

Overall just seems HK outplayed Belgium. Belgium didn't come with a weakened side and neither did Hong Kong. Both sides have improved immensely but especially Hong Kong over the past 3-4 years with Leigh Jones and Dai Rees building that program up. I gotta say both Korea and Hong Kong have stepped immensely over the past couple of years in their quality of play though they are still a little ways from Japan (who have gotten even better under Eddie Jones). Really encouraging on the Asian rugby side.
For Belgium, surely they must be disappointed as I'm sure they had many chances to win both matches but the wheels just seemed to fall off the wagon. Don't know how long they were there for but I have to believe the time change affected them at least for the first match in terms of build-up and body adjustment.

EDIT: Here's full match footage from test 1
