2013 Pacific Nations Cup: Japan vs. Canada 19/06/13

Not going to lie I am not a big fan of bonus points. The fact that Canada beat both Fiji and Tonga only to have one of them win the tournament (most likely) is a bit of a farce to me.

I think You will find the same thing could be said by a Japanese Fan. Tonga and Fiji beat Japan yet the Canadians Lost to them. Whoever wins the Match between Tonga and Fiji will end up on 3 wins and 1 Loss the only difference will be they Finished the games they won better than Canada did. So I cant see Bonus Points being a bad thing, it promotes entertaining Rugby which is good for the game.

I don't think the BP is a bad thing, just that Canada failing to get more and not preventing other teams from getting them has really cost us. It cost us at the last WC as well.

Not a farce at all. Either team could have won those matches, Tonga would have won if they didn't retaliate in those fights and get carded, Fiji would have won if the ref spotted the canadian was offside for one of their tries, there was only 2 points in the game. Canada are a good team but you can't say they deserve the ***le more than Fiji and Tonga. Teams have to work harder to score more tries, Fiji have done that. BP promotes a more entertaining game so I'm all in favour of it

With a kickoff time that their bodies told them was 6:10 a.m. ET, it shouldn't surprise that Canada looked pretty sluggish in Nagoya. Add on a massive flight that limited them to just one team run the day before, maybe it really should be said that it's amazing how well Canada was able to do.

The Canadians controlled the first half well, slowing the pace down whenever they could. On the whole, they defended very well but going forward, they lacked much of the verve that had brought success against Fiji and especially Tonga. Finding a more dynamic attack is the next task for the Canadian coaches going forward.

That's not such a bad thing in the long term. In the short term, this loss means Canada will likely finish 2nd in the 2013 Pacific Nations Cup. That's a shame.

1. Hubert Buydens – scrum time was again solid, but didn't see much else from him. 6.

2. Ryan Hamilton – works hard in the loose but had a tough day in the lineouts. 6.

3. Jason Marshall – again, was solid in scrums, but didn't see much of his usual go-forward attacking style. 6.

4. Jon Phelan – tackled like a demon; performed well in the tight. 7.

5. Brett Beukeboom – see Phelan. 7.

6. Tyler Ardron – another fine day; played final twenty minutes at number eight. 7.

7. Nanyak Dala – set up the first break on the Hearn try. a strong physical presence. 7.

8. Aaron Carpenter – as ever, used his big size positively. Went off with twenty minutes to go. 7.

9. Sean White – without a doubt, Canada's man of the match. Great off load on Hearn's try; kicked and passed well. Made some excellent cover tackles too. 8.

10. Liam Underwood – a massively improved performance. In tough conditions, worked hard to get the Canadian backline going and defended well. 7.

11. Taylor Paris – in the horrendous rain, it was always going to be a challenge for a winger to have influence going forward. Was dependable, but no breakthrough moments. 6.

12. Nick Blevins – a solid, direct return to the lineup. Crowley must like his game; Blevins looks to be growing in confidence. 7.

13. Ciaran Hearn – a great try for the big centre, following up on the Dala, Blevins and White breaks. Missed two long range kicks that might have changed the final story. 7.

14. Connor Braid – after Saturday's struggles at full back, he was moved to the wing. Did much better there on Wednesday, but a late fumble will leave him thinking about what might have been different. 7.

15. James Pritchard – kicked well, was solid under the high ball. In heavy rain, that's about all you can ask. 7.

Substitutes

16. Ray Barkwill – subbed on at beginning of second half, when Hamilton was forced off injured. Played a lot of defence; was screened out on the break by Japanese fly half Tatakawa that initiated the sequence which lead to the winning try, then let outside centre Sau step inside. It was an tough sequence to watch. 6.

17. Tom Dolezel – replaced Buydens in last five minutes. Incomplete.

18. Andrew Tiedemann – came on for Marshall in last 14 minutes; didn't stand out in either direction. 6.

19. Cam Pierce – made his international debut, subbing on for Phelan with 14 to go. Didn't do much either way. 6.

20. Aaron Flagg – an industrious 20 minutes in Carpenter's place, the big flanker was noticeable on defence and made a pair of powerful runs. 7.

21. Eric Wilson – "Remember that time I flew to Japan to pee in a cup?" Didn't get on the pitch; White was playing lights out, so no surprise.

22. Mike Fuailefau – made his debut, replaced Paris with 20 to go. A solid start. 6.

23. Pat Parfrey – replaced Underwood for the final 16 minutes, shuffling Connor Braid to fly half. Like most, did fine, but no outstanding moments. 6.
