[2013 EOYT] Ireland

The only thing going for us is that its the week after their England game, they'll be up for that hugely and wont be able to emulate it two weeks in a row. Apart from that... No.

Currently an overall record of:

Played 27 - All Blacks 26 Wins - Ireland 0 wins - 1 Draw.
It's a fairly appalling record alright! At this stage, as well as New Zealand's superior talent, Ireland are trying to overcome a psychological battle when they face New Zealand. Due to the awful record, at the back of our minds is the thought that New Zealand are better than us and should win. What I'd like to challenge is the fact that New Zealand winning games before the last 5 or 6 years should have no bearing on the outcome of this game. If we get over that mental hurdle, it'll be a good start.

Yeah... But no. We don't stand a chance. NZ by 15+ easily.
1: Healy
2: Best
3: Ross
4: Ryan
5: Henderson
6: Ferris
7: O'Brien
8: Heaslip
9: Murray
10: Sexton
11: Zebo
12: Marshall
13: BO'D
14: Bowe
15: Kearney

That is my ideal Ireland XV and even that I don't think would come within 10 points of the current NZ side, 2nd test last year was a one off and I don't think it's going to happen any time soon.

That's a funny way to spell Paul O'Connell.

I think it's a talented side , but none of the provinces are really firing at the moment , individually we've a few players whom I believe would make it into the AB's squad but not enough on current performances to really Expect to win this game , although I don't think an upset is out of the question Irish players will need to find form that they've been lacking since the start of the season.

Only Players to match AB quality in Ireland at the moment or have a chance in making into their squad would be.

Healy
Ferris
O'Brien
Sexton
BOD

For that reason unless they perform seamlessly and give a textbook team performance we haven't got much of a chance.

And Tommy Bowe.

And Tommy Bowe.

Dunno about Bowe they're he'd make the squad, I'd say but not sure if he'd make the 23. PO'C would, they've got very good secondrows but a PO'C like the PO'C from the first lines test is something else.

Anyway will we win? Eh...probably not but there's always that tiny glimmer which I'll cling to. In our favour is that New Zealanders aren't even looking to this game yet all the focus is on England, there's also talk of New Zealand experimenting that match, Schmidt's influence and the likely emotion from a team with hugely pumped O'Driscoll. Against us is everything else including that huge mental block.

At risk of getting banned by Draggs I'm going to say that I'd take him ahead of Ben Smith.

I want Ireland to play like Leinster this autumn, with this in mind the team I'd pick would be

15 Kearney
14 Bowe
13 O'Driscoll
12 D'Arcy
11 McFadden
10 Sexton
9 Reddan
8 Heaslip
7 O'Brien
6 O'Mahony
5 O'Connell
4 Toner
3 Ross
2 Best
1 Healy

So 11 Leinster players because they know Joe's game plan with rest to come up to speed during his tenure. Wanna fight about it?

I'd never play PO'C and Toner together tbh.

Btw Earls is confirmed out for the Samoa game and Sexton may be a slight concern with "tightness".

Interesting situation for the coaching ticket if Sexton isn't available. Do you go with Jackson or Madigan? On one hand you'd say that Jackson possibly has the more rounded game and is in better form, but his kicking game is so unpredictable that for what will most likely be a tight game where we need to take our chances he may be a liability. Madigan brings more kicking consistency and a greater attacking threat, but he hasn't been great this season (admittedly, his chances have been rather limited) and he possibly doesn't kick the corners as well.

I'd go with Madigan, because yolo.

With Earls out though that brings in McFadden on the wing. Meaning Jackson doesn't have to kick. I'd pick Jackson because he's been the best outhalf in Ireland this year. Damn why can't I be reckless?

It's been a long while indeed since Ferg did any serious kicking. I wonder how much he's been training at it as of late. A very accomplished goalkicker no doubt, but the fact that he hasn't been doing it in a while is disconcerting.

Also, Jackson is a bit poo without Ruan inside him (ohh, dirty).

Jackson does fine without Pienaar - or at least as well as any fly-half on the receiving end of Small P/Porter/Heaney would do. He did the job for us against Connacht/Glasgow/Ospreys this season - better than the one Pienaar did against the Scarlets. His kicking was excellent in those games too. Know its dipped again but I am a lot less worried about his goalkicking now. One of McFadden or Murray - practising kicks for Munster again by all accounts - could be a safety net, but he appears to do better without one tbh.

Personally, I think the only reason not to pick him is if there's someone better, and maybe a few lingering doubts about his consistency. He's earned a shot - although who knows what Schmidt will plump for.
