1/2 Final Play offs

I think they're the worst...(in terms of no. of int'l players).
Not great for the local market, but I suppose it builds strong teams with solid chemistry...it's not everything to just buy stars, they need to mesh.

Always wondered how does the French system work in terms of playing non-French nationals in your team. Is there a limit to how many can be in the squad? Also how does Toulon compare to other teams in the Top14 in terms of foreign players?

There is a system where the French clubs must have a certain proportion of 'French produced' players in the squad.

I'm sure a certain Clermont may have smt to say about that.

First they must beat Castres and then have a long look at the H Cup final to see exactly where they went wrong, with the ball and terrority they had in the final they should have won, however they did not and now Toulon are on a massive high their defence is second to none and where everybody thought they would suffer against the Toulouse pack they did not even without Hayman, forfeiting at the last minute. I still think Clermont will win the final as long as they beat Castres but they are going to have to play a hell of a lot better than they did in the H Cup final, so far i backed Clermont in the H Cup, Toulouse last night and at the moment all is wrong so i obviously do not know what the hell i am talking about !!!!!!!!

they'll get Castres, they'll get Castres...
but yes a lot of ppl have said ASM lost the HC Final rather than Toulon won it, it's of course partially true...to me it just felt like Clermont had already won it after that second try in a row, and I sort of sat back and relaxed and all of a sudden a few kicks and an ingenious Lobbe moment and that ****** Armitage was off running and taunting and scoring and conversion and boom...Toulon never looked back.

I think Clermont thought they'd won it after that very intense and excellent 2nd half start/middle part. That absolute BOULEVARD that opened up in the waning moments was ridiculous. They obviously weren't playing as tight and focused and dedicated as the first 55min or so.

With the weapons they have, in the backs notably, they can't fail a second time here. They've ruled all, all year long...this was their year, and they must get it.
Toulon's very good, but Clermont's better.

Half time score Clermont 3 Castres 12 at the moment the lights are on in Clermont but there is nobody at home the Clermont pack is getting destroyed up front.

Shock of the season French Final Castres v Toulon after Castres strangled what little strengh that Clermont had left, coming out easy winners 25-9

they'll get Castres, they'll get Castres...

dude, you're such a fkn loser man...and what kind of a name is yoe91 anyways ?!...
You always, always root for the wrong team man...it's like you're bad luck or smt !
Just do us all a favor and stfu next time, okay ?!

srsly...Clermont just....wtf guys, just wtf...

The better team won and thats all there is to say.
Go for Castres Yoe and stop picking favourites maybe your luck could change, but then i doubt it !!!!!

well I wasn't going for Clermont just because they were favorites, but I see your point.
I absolutely agree "The better team won and thats all there is to say", it's my only relief. I absolutely can't stand when my team loses a match they "should've won" or could've easily changed the outcome of...but this was just Castres beating ASM, fair and square, nothing to say at all. No controversy there...

Castres looked damn good today, I like them...I hope they can beat Toulon honestly, even though they won't unfortunately...Clermont was the only other juggernaut capable of that feat.

Thanks guys for the info.....just arrived Le Mans after dreadful 2 days travelling so missed it all!! will be back tomorrow so service can resume! Toulouse obviously had blip in 1/4s and reverted to the crap they have played all season. I raise it again ....time for change at top? Castres....WHO WOULD HAVE SEEN THAT ONE!!

Wow thats some result. The losing of the final last weekend must have knocked the stuffing out of them mentally.

Are Clermont 1 of mentally fragile teams now in European rugby?

How would you feel playing in a European Final then the following week having a semi-final to contend with? I'd imagine most of the players were exhausted.

Through but in on about over the years they have lost alot of big games

Munster and Leinster both lost a fair few big games before winning more to be fair. And to be honest, I don't think it was any disgrace losing to Leinster perhaps the greatest European team there is by a whisker last season. Some of the matches in past years they simply lost to better sides and were not expected to win, however this season's losses are different to those.

This match was always going to be difficult for Clermont. They were bashed up mentally and physically from the Toulon match. Castres had a weeks rest while they were playing one of the toughest matches lost in a tough way. A similar thing happened last season after they lost to Leinster.

They picked up a few knocks from that match as well, Cudmore and Vosloo were ruled out and they gambled trying to get through this with a semi strength team normal starters Domingo, Hines and Brock James were deemed in need of a rest and left on the bench, which backfired. Parra took a knock as well in the match and is out of the New Zealand tour. Contrast this with Toulon, who would have had better morale and only made one enforced change from the final.

In fairness though, despite those missing players, the replacements were of the standard of French international Julien Pierre and All Black Mike Delany. They should have had enough depth and have a strong squad so it shouldn't have been an excuse. Vern Cotter has now said he will step down after not renewing his contract after next season.

On an unrelated note, I don't like the Top 14 having neutral semi finals when the teams who finished in the top 2 of the league should get home advantage as reward for their league place in my opinion.

nahhh...it's nice of you to look for reasons, but there's no excuse for Clermont. They failed, fair and square...unfortunately.
They had all the tools on paper, and played amazing all season. Every other team in the Top 14 knows what to expect during the season...

I'd keep the fatigue excuse for France's thrashing on that first test at the kiwis' ! :p

Regardless of home advantage Clermont bottled it a bit and like yoe91 said fatigue can't be excuse. Regards Munster and Leinster comments. Up until Leinster beat Quins in that QF they were a poor team in many ways but always had tools and when they got bit of confidence they never looked back so they really never had the issue. In years 02-09 they were mentally poor in big games but they werent a massive name even they're fans admit that and from 09 on they're record speaks for itself. Munster were rightfully bashed as been mentally poor and rightfully so. The Wasps semi final was when that issue was at its peak and argubally rightfully so. We have 2 HECs which saves our blushes a bit but we admittedly underachieved. But I think Clermont over the years have really underachieved considering the resources available and that has to be a worry. And the longer it goes on the more suspect they become. Yesterday isn't the same as loosing to a Toulon or Toulouse. And again I will quote this isn't just based on this week or last week

There were lot of hung over Toulouse supporters in the motorway service stations on the way to Bordeaux (en route home) today...........they must have had a good weekend despite their loss!!

This season is undoubtedly the worst end of season collapse. They lost to two sides they are better than. In other years they have mostly lost to simply better sides, apart from the Leinster match in 2010 where they were better that day and blew it.

Leinster didn't win in 02-09 because the front five weren't good enough imo.
