Romanian Rugby

These are Pumas matches from June:

11 June - Argentina v Italy
18 June - Argentina v France
25 June - Argentina v France

So Romania won't play a T1 team this year too. Shameful display by WR.

I think there is Nations Cup between 4 -18 June in Romania so I dont see how Oaks can play in Argentina.

This sucks. Why does Romania consistently get the worst treatment of all Tier 2 nations? I still hope we will play in Argentina, apparently the Oaks will send an A squad to the Nations Cup so it's still possible.

It really seems like World Rugby wants to kill the sport in Romania, not even one real test in ten years? And against Italy at the RWC they did everything to make sure that we lose: from the unfair schedule that did not give the Oaks enough rest after the crucial Canada match to the ridiculous suspension of captain Macovei.

But hey, we get to host an extended Nations Cup! A competition nobody cares about and costs the FRR a lot of money from their already meager resources.

Other news:
- Timisoara will play against Heidelberger RK without Shennan, Lemnaru and Burcea (all injured). Since Timisoara is already qualified and the players are unfit after a break of one month, I think the Germans have a realistic chance to win and make it to the Challenge Cup playoffs.
- There is almost no chance for Stiinta Petrosani to play in the Superliga next season but apparently the mayor of Galati could support the promotion of the local team and a delegation from the FRR has visited the town last month to inspect the conditions.

Timisoara Saracens squad against Heidelberg (Timisoara is already qualified for the playoffs regardless of the result):
1. Gigi Militaru
2. Eugen Capatana
3. Alexandru Tarus
4. Valentin Poparlan
5. Marian Drenceanu
6. Randall Morrisson
8. Daniel Ianus
7. Vasile Rus (cap)
9. Valentin Calafeteanu
10. Jody Rose
11. Viliami Moala
12. Paula Kinikinilau
13. Brian Sefanaia
14. Tangimana Fonovai
15. Jack Umaga

Subs: Andrei Radoi, Sione Taupaki, Samuel Maris, Dorin Lazar, Marian Gorcioaia, Vladut Zaharia, Tevita Manumua, Marius Simionescu.

Simionescu is a 19-year old fullback capped by Romania U18, he was signed from CSS Unirea Iasi, I hope he will get to play a few minutes. Timisoara wants to play against Calvisano in the playoffs instead of Russian club Krasny-Yar due to the much lower travel costs to Italy, there are several direct low-cost flights from the Timisoara Airport.

Do you think Timisoara can chose his opponent?

No, the Timisoara manager was just asked who they wish to play against.

I think it will be the Italians who choose their opponents since the Qualifying Competition was started by their union. I bet they will make Timisoara play against the Russians in order to give Calvisano an easier opponent and avoid a trip to Siberia. If Rovigo qualifies from the other group, a match against Calvisano guarantees that one Italian club will go through, while Heidelberg is surely seen as easier to beat than Timisoara.

I won't even comment on the test topic any more. It's so wrong but nobody cares anyway, besides a handful of Romanian fans. Most Tier 1 fans are happy to watch the same fixtures over and over again.

Timisoara Saracens won 10-3 against Heidelberg after a very poor match but the result didn't matter anyway, they were already qualified for the playoffs.

that be good if galati are involved in super liga. just wondering when this meeting which was due to be after world cup about romania or georgia coming up to the six nations relgation in six nation is very good idea i feel? so curious lot of talk about it but havent heard much since?

Fly half Michael Wiringi will leave Baia Mare and return to New Zealand.

Three other Baia Mare players have signed new contracts with the club: n8 Constantin Ene, lock Marius Danila and scrum half Bizdina Shamkaradze.

Probably Wiringi could have had played few more seasons for Baia Mare. However, he wasn't the same player after last injury, sad to see him go, he's a great bloke and I had some nice chats with him while he was with Oaks.

Wiringi was really unfortunate to break his leg at the end of 2014, when he was in great form. He was never the same after that and didn't play well at the RWC. His fitness is not the same as before, he wants to get married and I don't think he had the motivation to continue so this is probably the best decision for both him and the club. Hopefully young players like Oprea or Bucur will now get the chance to play more.

He's a nice guy indeed and he speaks Romanian surprisingly well.

I watched Perpignan vs Tarbes on TV tonight. It's the first time I watch Tudor Stroe, he's a beast in scrums. He got the best of Paulica Ion in the first half, forcing his replacement at the break. The Georgian prop replacing Ion did even worse against Stroe and Tarbes won penalties in every scrum until eventually the Georgian got a yellow card. USAP did win some crucial scrums at the end when Paulica was back on the pitch and Stroe was off, winning the match with 14 players.

Stroe looks like a very talented scrummager, I bet he will soon play in the Top 14. Howells should select him for the Oaks as soon as possible.

i think timisoara may play calvisano. after they got hammered last night in poor performance by italian club. and also romanian cup what are teams like barlad suceava and buzau who not coming up will they be playing there own cup?

All the second division clubs, including the bottom ones like Arad or Suceava, are supposed to play in the Romanian Cup. We'll see if all can find the required budget. Last time when the Superliga clubs played against these semi-pro/amateur sides in the Cup, there were a few 100+ wins.

Various transfer news and rumours:
- CS Navodari has signed veteran lock/flanker Onal Agiacai (last season at CSM Bucuresti). He's a very solid player who could become the leader of their team.
- Moldovan international fullback Mihai Golubenco (last season at Steaua) is training with Poli Iasi. In my opinion, he's the only skilled Moldovan back.
- young lock Florian Rosu (was on loan at Dinamo) will return to Baia Mare.
- it seems that CSM Bucuresti will keep a few players with experience, like captain Adrian Ion.

Great move for Stroe, he was huge against Perpignan.

Tarbes will be relegated, hopefully Marius Antonescu will also find another club.

The new gear of the Oaks was lauched today, it looks ridiculous in my opinion.

The big news of the day is that the FRR has signed a 4-year TV rights deal with Dolce Sport. Dolce will own the rights for all Romanian rugby matches, including the national team, the Superliga, the Romanian Cup and King's Cup. I think it's a good move that shows an increase in the commercial potential of rugby in the country. Dolce will pay some money for the rights and the qualify of their broadcasts will be much better than TVR. However, Dolce is a private station with a coverage of around 15%, unlike the public station TVR that was free to air. This will cause an actual decrease in the TV audience of Romanian rugby.

It seems that Iasi is the only club willing to promote to the Superliga next season. Galati and Petrosani did not find the funds, while Navodari only wants to promote in a 10-team format. I wonder if the FRR will go with a 7-team league. I really don't know why they don't create a Bucharest-based academy club that could take the 8th spot.
