Robertson is 2/1 favourite to be next Wales coach. Lump on.

Can anyone in the know give me some info on Robertson? Previous experience? Why do we want him?

Do NZ want him to go away to get experience first? Meaning he might be available for us?

Very short summary is that he’s won every competition Crusaders have been in, barring the one-off Trans-Tasman tournament (Crusaders were unbeaten but didn’t win due to points difference). 3 consecutive SR titles and probably would have kept that going but for COVID.

TLDR: plays attractive rugby and is a serial winner.

If I’m Robertson and England have already been in touch, why take the Wales job? Even cursory look at the squad and up and coming players in the age grades wouldn’t suggest Wales will be a team that the next coach is likely to be winning competitions with.

I guess he could say ‘I’ll coach Wales at the RWC’ on a short term gig, but if that went badly, that might backfire.

Because he’s not guaranteed to get the England job. It all comes down to how serious the contact is doesn’t it? I mean, sure, if they’ve basically said said to him “the gig is yours” then yeah but if it’s just the RFU sounding him out coz he’s on a short list then A 100% offer on the table in the here and now is going to be tempting.

Comes back to what I was saying earlier in the thread about identifying the right man (presumably…..) early and then going flat out to get him. All kinds of variables can disrupt the best laid plans.

That said, sorry WE but, as BPM implies, I don’t think the Wal job is that attractive for top class candidates at the moment. What you really need is a turnaround specialist, if only there was one already on these shores…..

He’s basically whored himself out to every international job by saying how keen he is to get into international coaching. Obviously Wales wouldn’t be as attractive a proposition as England but not attractive at all? Nah, I disagree.

Also, he’ll be supremely confident in his own ability and while he might not look at the pool of players in Wales and think he’ll win the WC he could well think I can turn this squad around and raise my profile.

Seems decent then, hoping he can translate his skill to international rugby then.

If he already signs a contract with England for 4 years then why not take a 1 year with Wales, if nothing else it gives a him experience before he gets to us, doubt Wales would go for it as it would give England alot of knowledge of the welsh.

I would be absolutely amazed if he’s signed on the dotted line already. Most I can see is they’ve made an informal verbal offer, a gentleman’s agreement. If that’s the case then no chance he goes to Wales on a short term deal. What I think is that they’ve made some basic informal contact letting him know he’s on a short list of candidates they’d like to interview.

I will be furious if England miss out on a top candidate because they dragged their heels under the guise of making sure they get the best candidate. We have a huge advantage in that we know when our coach is leaving and we can get someone in place now ready for after the world cup. The longer we wait the more chance there is of other countries getting in first. I don't mind if they hire Borthwick because they genuinely think he's the best option (personally I don't think he's ready). However if we go with Borthwick because everyone else signed other contracts first then it will be a joke.

If Wales do sack the Vac then Gatland will step forward as the hero in a bid to salvage his reputation whilst auditioning for the England job at the same time (please God, no). Bookie odds are irrelevant anyway as they’ll be largely driven by the the money being put on.

I agree, Gatland as a interim coach probably seems the most likely. I don’t agree that Robertson has too much to lose taking the Wales job though. I only see positives really. Only way he comes out of it negatively is if he actually does worse than Pivac I.e lose to Italy and Georgia at home. If he gets us back in and around the top 4 then his stock would’ve have risen considerably.

Situation isn't vacant for another 12 months yet - we'll be in the early stages of putting together a short list - which will contain more than 1 name.

I guarantee that if we had signed and named Eddie's successor already, we would be complaining about how we're jumping the gun, and undermining the current crew ahead of the RWC; and how can you know someone's form a year out.

As far as I'm aware, France are the only country to have announced their post-RWC coaching crew - and that's because they're extending the existing contracts

Not saying have a successor now, but they should definitely be in touch with people. Also didn't they want someone in place for 2023 to work with EJ through a transition period?

Can’t see tigers letting him go and really don’t think he’s ready. He’s not shone in the premiership until he’s had some consistency but that leaves another 2 years at tigers really.
