The modern outside back often has the problem of being thrown around the backline and being used as a utilty-back and never quite mastering one mastering one position.

It's happened to Mathew Tait in England and Hook for Wales.

In Ireland Keith Earls has being playing on the left wing. And playing very well too. Today due to injury he got moved to inside-centre (kind of) and scored two tries. This season at Munster he's been moved to the wing for the most part but has played 3 (I think) matches at outside centre. Last season at Munster he was played a few times at first centre but mostly at fullback...

The question is...where's his best position in the long run?

Well he's a calss act and we have to try and get him on the field. I think he should be played OC for Munster, beacuse its a more technical position and would need a lot of time to adjust.

For ireland, well thats tough. When Fitz is back there'll be some tough decisions. i see earls as an unreal impact sub anywhere 11,13,14 and 15. Well until BOD retires or someone loses form.

Over the last two games Earls has played as well as Luke ever has in a green jersey, Fitz won't be an automatic selection at all when he is back.

I'm not convinced by him, even though he has feet like hands - see him kicking the ball off the ground from a bad BOD pass today?

Good for killing off 6N stragglers, but I don't see him doing much against the big guys at wing. But then I'd prefer to see Bowe in the centre, so maybe Earls should replace him out wide.

The only way for him to do grrrreat things for Ireland is at fullback. Kearney is slow off the mark, so if Kidney wants more attack/less defence that's the way to go.

I have not posted as much as usual on her lately, and feel the need to let it all out of my system with a good old rant on this subject. Brace yourselves!

I think his best position is easily fullback, he is lethal on the counterattack, give him space at your peril. However, at international level, his defensive positioning isn't top notch (neither is Kearney's) and there are question marks over his ability to handle high balls.

I think you also need to bring his competition into it, since it should bring Shtove and Pretwick flying into the debate, I will us Economic terms. Ireland has scarce resources when it comes to players with the talent to excel at international level, and we need to use them efficiently so we get the maximum utility from them.

Keith Earls
Tommy Bowe
Luke Fitzgerald
Rob Kearney
Andrew Trimble

I firmly believe these 5 player will make up 11-15 (maybe not 12 though) in 2015, the question is who will play where?

Rob Kearney is unrivalled under the highball, and his left foot is a cannon, he is also hard to bring down when he runs into the line and straightens. However, he is far from a Muliana or even a Geordan Murphy when attacking, his positioning isn't perfect and he has missed a few tackles at international level, not the whole package just yet. I do think he will be our 15 though in the long run, as he has plenty of time to work on these parts of his game. Earls, Bowe and Fitz are all comfortable at fullback.

At 13, BOD will leave huge shoes to fill. Based mainly on his outstanding performance in the Lions 3rd test, and his ability to pick those outstanding lines through midfield as well as take contact and offload, Tommy Bowe is my preference here. I know moving the worlds best 14 at the moment to 13 might sounds crazy when Earls will probably be playing 13 for Munster, but I think that Tommy is out best option.

That leaves Fitz and Earls on the wings, which is great, two extremely talented player, but neither are "real" wingers, but in the modern game a winger needs to be able to kick, tackle, come off his wing and attack through midfield (which Tommy Bowe has almost perfected) and importantly drop back and deal with highballs. Earls and FItz has all these skills, as long as supreme finishing skills, and both will make outstanding wingers. A problem may arise however if Earls is playing 13 for Munster, as he probably will be.

That leaves 12, and Andrew Trimble, who is most certainly not a 12, but neither is any of the above players, and none of them are suited to it whatsoever. If i had to shoehorn one in, it would be Bowe, as he has the Bulk and soft hands to pull it off, but really I hope we can develop a top class 12 without shoehorning an outside back in here.

In the Long run.

11. Fitzgerald
12.
13. Bowe
14. Earls
15. Kearney

I think Kearney, Fitzgerald and Bowe will all end up playing there for their clubs, but Earls will either be a 13 or 15 for Munster, and will do a damn fine job there, so I am at a crossroads once more on where to vote for him in the poll. Munster just don't have the resources Ireland do. In an ideal world we would have signed Bowe and play him at 13 with Earls on the wing, but Earls is our best 13 now and will be next season too. Howlett and Murphy/Hurley on the wing and Warwick at fullback.

So my conclusion, for now is for Ireland he should be developed as a winger and for Munster as a centre. Getting nowhere :(

Earls is an incomplete player. He's brilliant with a yard of space but he's a defensive liability. If he curbs his tendancy to shoot out of the line when he plays outside centre and gets a distributor inside him at 12, Earls will become a fantastic 13. If he doesn't improve his defensive positioning, Earls may best be developed as a Shane Williams or David Campese type roving winger who's liable to pop up anywhere in attack.

In short, I don't know what his best position will be!

Defensive liability is harsh, he rarely if ever misses a tackle. The 13 shooting up is part of the way Irish teams play at the highest level it seems, you can hardly expect a guy who rarely plays there to have perfected it, even BOD has been known to leave a dog leg that has been exploited recently. If he is developed as a 13, that will improve.

I agree he rarely misses a tackle (he puts in a few key hits today) but he's often caught out of position. For example, the Heineken Cup semi final last year (when O'Driscoll put Nacewa through a gap left by Earls which lead to D'arcy's try) and also against England last week (as soon as O'Driscoll went off the field, Earls' positioning was exploited and England almost scored 5 pointer). Earls will be a fantastic all round player if he becomes less reckless in defending the outside centre channel. For now he's an excellent attacker but needs to work on other aspects of his game.

Good post.

I hope Bowe will take over at 13 - grand central station for attacking options, just perfect for him, although his defence won't be as good as BOD's.

I really wonder about Kearney - he doesn't have the speed, just catches and kicks. I reckon Dempsey was better at hitting the line, scoring tries. Will he last under Kidney with Murphy in place?

Talking about RWC 11 - Darcy and Horgan and ROG are just as likely to start as all the young uns. In fact, Darcy is a cert if fit. And t'other two do a great cross-field kick act. Plus ROG actually kicks his points.

Kidney will take it in his stride.

Any young centre has to develop their defence side. O'Driscoll wasn't born with his defence as good as it is now. I'm sure Earls will continue to improve.

My biggest concern used be his distribution, but that's improved ALOT in the last year.

Earls at centre against the big teams would be horrible. BOD was the first centre I ever saw tackle and rip, and that was pretty early in his career, early twenties. The rest of the world followed his example. If the ability is there, you will see it straight away.

Lads as a fella who has followed Keith since he has been a kid I can assure you long-term his best spot will be 13 long-term.
But equally he can become a smashing wing or fullback if given a cemented position. But noidsay Earls is too good a player to just be a sub.

And Snoop I agree with you that defensively vs England Earls was shaky but well in the circumstances he wasn't the only one and I'd say he tackled immensely like BOD would have against England.
Like it easy criticise his defense but we don't do it to BOD when his shoot defense (I know it planned) causes a gap, do we.
And last year vs Leinster we wouldn't have backed a winner in a 1 horse race that day :cryy:
Like Keith is still developing and learning and his progress is going excellent in my eyes. And if I'm honest he only really settling into set-up now and was probably 1of our best players vs England and today and even against France he did not disgrace himself.
Today he showed great skill with flick up (as he did vs Dragons in ML last year), Smashing kick down field at 1 stage when Byrne dived into touch, 2 great tries AND was very good with tackles so don't know how ye can put this guy down.

In long-term I see Luke Fitz as our 12 and Keith as our 13. And personally my backline in few years would be:

9. T.O'Leary
10. J.Sexton
11. I think Johne Murphy may be a wild card bet (he only gone 25)
12. L.Fitzgearld
13. K.Earls
14. King Bowe
15. R.Kearney

But still in shock that a guy who is improving at a rapid pace and turning into as good a player as the Kearney's, Fitz's etc is being questioned.
Like Sexton was poor today are we going to say he wont make as a 10 because poor kicking in 2 games .... No like they develop with game time and will only get better and I for 1 wont be worried about Keith's defense as I know from his days with Thomond and Munchins up that he will be fine.

If we're talking 4/5 years from now it's a really tough call lads. Especially at centre.

9. T O'Leary
10. J. Sexton/ I. Humphreys/ I. Keatley/ I. McKinley(?)
11. L. Fitzgerald/ A. Trimble/ F. Carr
12. D. Cave/ K. Earls/ F. McFadden
13. T. Bowe/ D. Cave/ K. Earls/ F. McFadden
14. T. Bowe/ A. Trimble/ F. Carr
15. R. Kearney

I've left a fair few players out but that's just a rough idea of how things mite look. there's some serious talent but I think McFadden is a serious hope and should move club because he's just not getting a look in at Leinster. He's not getting the required game time to really improve.
What scrum halves do we have for the future besides O'Leary?

Scrumhalves? Em Paul'O Donohgue at Leinster is a promising player and Frank Murphy at Connacht is only about 25 or 26.

Also to throw a few other names into the backs debate: Simon Zebo, Tiernan O'Halloran, Andrew Conway.

Frank Murphy is not only 25 or 26...I am looking that up. Connacht is his third team.

Edit: Frank Murphy is 28, 29 by December.

Em, Conor O'Mahony and Duncan Williams are fighting it out in Munster at Con and Shannon and they're both very good players, so it'll be interesting to see of TOL comes under pressure at Munster next year or the year after.

Another scrum half to throw into the mix down the line is Peter du Toit:

PeterduToit_IrelandSchools.jpg

As a 4th year out of King's Hospital he was a starting flanker on the Leinster schools team which went unbeaten on a tour to South Africa. Since converting to scrum half he's been a consistently excellent starter for Leinster and Ireland's u18 and u19 teams. He's a regular try scorer at those levels. At present he's in the Leinster sub-academy. Big, big prospect.

Ah I knew Snoopy would save the day.[/b]
Ha! He's the only player I can think of though. There's a scrum half playing schools for Ulster and Ireland who's supposedly the **** but I haven't seen him play.

I think we're sorely lacking in 9's at the moment. A few years ago Duncan Williams was the best scrum half prospect I've seen since Ciaran Scally, emerging from the same age group international team as Rob Kearney. To my mind, Williams was the star on that team. Hopefully he can put his injuries behind him and become a challenger to Tomas O'Leary in the future for both province and country.

Why wasn't Du Toit playing for the U20's? I actually remember people talking about KH having a quality scrum half when I was in school.
