Warrington Wolves’ England forward Ben Westwood has been handed a five-match ban for a high tackle that laid out former Australian Test forward Dane Carlaw.
The 27-year-old second rower was placed on report by Australian referee Jason Robinson for the challenge on Carlaw during the Wolves’ 40-20 home defeat by Catalans Dragons in a feisty match at the Halliwell Jones Stadium on Saturday.
He was subsequently charged with a grade D tackle and admitted the offence when he appeared before the Rugby Football League’s disciplinary committee.
Westwood, who was also fined £300, will not be free to start playing again until the fourth round of the Challenge Cup in April.
I should think so as well. Shocking 'tackle' and a very distasteful reaction to it from Westwood.
Other bans this week:
Wigan Warriors will be without hooker Michael McIlorum for Saturday’s game at Harlequins RL because of suspension.
He was given a £200 fine and a one-match ban by the RFL disciplinary committee after being found guilty of a dangerous throw on Castleford Tigers forward Mitchell Sargent during the Warriors’ 28-23 home defeat by the Tigers last Friday.
Catalans Dragons second rower Jamal Fakir was also banned for one match and handed a £300 fine for a high tackle on Warrington Wolves captain Adrian Morley during Saturday’s 40-20 win over the Wolves.
