Warm Up Match 2: Blues v British & Irish Lions (Auckland)

Probably so. I mean, the Blues are the bottom NZ SR side and I'd go as far as saying the Lions, Sharks and maybe even the Stormers and Brumbies are better teams.

In saying that I also believe the Lions (Golden Lions from SA) would be a better test for visiting France than the Bokke will and that's due to them being a well gelled match fit side rather than something cobbled together to see 'how she goes' and that is exactly what any B&I Lions side will always struggle with simply because of the 'invitational' nature of the team.

The Blues have also been in some sort of form recently don't let their few SR losses distract and it took an amazing try and two costly late B&I Lions errors to take them all the way.

No way are all those teams better than the Blues. The Lions yes, the others? Definitely no. The Stormers got away with murder in Cape Town and were given the game by the officials and would definitely lose at Eden Park and the Blues already beat the Brumbies in Australia in April.

Who is the Lions game breaker? That is my question. They huff and puff and come up strong in defence, but difficult to see a player (like Blues SBW, West, Ioane) capable of breaking the line and putting the other team on the back foot. All the pressure they exert is from line speed. Nothing evident today at halfback, centre, or wing. Webb's kicking basically gave the Blues the ball to have a go. No pressure and too deep. It didn't seem to bother him, as he kept on doing it. Surely not a tactic. Good line outs and pressure defence are the only real positives from Lions effort today.

Hard to see how Gatland can put together a team performance from the disparate units to be cohesive enough to win convincingly against most of the opposition they will face. Based on two games witnessed, I'd have to say the provincial matches will be squeakers, if we are lucky, and the tests will be pretty one sided.

Where are the tries coming from? That is my question. Perhaps the plan is to kick our way to glory down under. :)

Games like this make me realise why I watch more Southern Hemisphere rugby in my spare time. Just more invention, crisper in the offload, counter attacking, and general ball skill. Even among - so called - weaker sides. Lions look pedestrian. The more I see the Lions squad, the more I think a single nation would have a better chance in this sort of match up. Just not playing as a team.

Calming down now...

In all seriousness a few positives for the Lions. Dominated the scrum, decent in the line-out (until Best came on). Some good play by Tips and CJ who were both aggressive. Need that mobility and aggressiveness in the 2nd Row that Lawes and Itoje provided. We could've won but it was bad decision making and giving away penalties that cost us. SBW try was rather fortunate but it shots how alert you have to be in NZ.

The only back to come out with credit I thought was Webb (at least in the first half). We need more that the high kick from the FH. We didn't pick any spaces or lines tho.

Like to see 10/12 Sexton Farrell axis as I think we will get more out of our outside backs and take some pressure of Sexton. No 11/12/13/14/15 has stood out yet in these two games.

Settle down.
It takes time to get into the groove and this is the Boneyard mate, teams don't go to the Garden and get away without being tested.
The Lions need more games and they are working toward a final goal of winning 2 out of three tests.
Thats all they have to do.
Even winning one test will be commendable in the boneyard.

Saracens are full of Japies, we'd crush them on principle.

Ha! If our own SA teams and the backroom weren't stripped of all our Japies I dare say our rugby wouldn't be where it is.

5 minutes before we took the lead in the 2nd half we kept the ball in hand, and we looked so much better and got a penalty as a result of our play... As soon as we took the lead we started kicking again. Drove me mad

Just thinking here, but what are the run out of a really nice ass team this saturday now

Murray/Farrell 9/10 combo, as neither have started a game yet

George starting Hooker maybe?

Jonathon Davies I'd imagine at 13, with maybe Hogg given another chance to shine at FB, and can see both Liam Williams and George North playing Saturday too, despite Williams brain fart today

Theres probably some others but at least the backs look more promising for Saturday? My Positive mindset is probably really showing through here right now

Also on the first two matches, looking at the fly halves, Sexton is a solid fly half who on top form is great defensively, has a good wrap around play and can control territory. He doesnt necessarily play that well on the line, or personally I've not really viewed him like that. Biggar is a lesser version of Sexton in a lot of ways, his main threat being the high balls, and solid defensively. Its why I wish we'd had Finn Russell over Biggar, as he's managed to look a good player with Laidlaw giving him the damn ball!!!
Im hoping Farrell has really developed as a 10 this last year, as he could actually be far and away our most creative 10 on tour. A lack of second ball players at 12 limits our running abilities out wide big time, as we've seen with Wales for several years where they've really struggled to use North, and Williams to an extent, effectively.

Anyway we'll see what happens, but our passing quality has been pretty poor, certainly not world class so far, and thats part of the reason for our poor backline performances so far

We belted the Brumbies in Canberra a few weeks ago mate, do your homework.
Away from home we might struggle against the top saffer teams but at Eden Park it would be a very different story.

I'm seriously worried about this half-back situation.
Not only fly-half but scrum half. Webb looked sharp today but his kicking was really bad and put under massive pressure. Laidlaw is laidlaw, and there are ongoing questions about Murrays fitness. Can we fly Dan Robson in from the UK?

Or Wigglesworth... even better why not both ;)

If the game plan is to kick possession away then there are no better SHs at doing that than Wiggy

The last time NZ lost they were clearly outclassed in the air, every kick today was contested by a Lions' player. An obvious tactic but lacked the personnel under the high ball which put them under pressure, the kicks were good though.

Luatua was massive today... solidified my belief that he should make the ABs squad as the 6th Loose forward option.

Actually the perfect man would be the Saracens 9, Wigglesworth because he can kick well. They need to play a Saracens type game to have any chance.

They're not going to win much by playing running rugby because the players are not used to it.

Webb? Cannot agree. What did he do? He gave away 50% of our ball with aimless kicking if you ask me.

Fellas that would make a Lions test based on first two matches.
Marler
Sinckler decent first match
Itoje
Lawes
Owens - threw the ball in well
The Irish 9 - yet to start, but what I have seen (so far) has been bilge.
Farrell - see scrum half - other 10s just playing too **** :)
Teo - decent first game

Honestly, too many weaker players brought on this tour, and better form players left at home.
