Warm Up Match 1: New Zealand Barbarians v British & Irish Lions (Whangarei)

Fiiiiiine Olyy.
I can see the logic now in trying to get Sexton clicking before the big boy games get going, but anything more than 40 minutes would be a pretty dangerous idea here. Not much to debate on selections otherwise as it's not a test team, but a team capable of playing a good style and starting the tour with a bit of a try fest for the fans to get our hopes up. Numbers 4-8 have me fairly fluffy. I hope AWJ really takes Henderson under his wing. With Deysel going north next year Henderson should be fully rooted to that second row and some AWJ dog is exactly what that fella and Ulster need. (My legs remind people of a horse's effortless grace). That back three has looooovely balance too. Someone remind me when I'll be able to see this?

Isn't Deysel a centre?

I agree. I think he needs a little bit more bite and aggression to add to his game. He's good at spinning out of tackles from a standing start but I'd like to see him more taking more balls at pace, low and hard. Because he's absolutely got the physical attributes to be a top player. I was told Henderson is fastest off the line to the 22 in the Ulster squad. Although that is probably not saying much currently..

You're thinking of Taute who we're holding on to. Deysel spent three good months with us at the tail end of the season, but we need that NIQ spot for a second row of serious calibre.

I've seen some big men seriously fast off the line, so I can believe that. The same was true of David Wallace in the Irish squad back in the day. I mean he's a physical freak, but attitude is something you can't go without. Some people are born nasty and some have to learn it.

That's 9:30 for me boi, although pub's not open so it will be a laptop job on crappy connection.

How many of this team do you all think will start the first Test?

6 for me: AWJ, Warburton, Faletau, Sexton, Joseph and Hogg.

Watson is a maybe.

Pretty clear that they went for the most well rested players.

You think Alun Wyn's a starter?

Decent enough team.

Don't know how to feel about Olly Jaeger being involved in with the BaaBaas.

Dutch father, born in England, educated in Ireland, playing in New Zealand - if anyone represents the barbarian spirit it's him!

Will the NZ Super rugby sides still have access to their AB players? I remember they previously announced this but I haven't heard anything about it since.

If the Super rugby sides are full strength then I really think those matches would be as Intense as any international.

The paper yesterday stated the Blues and Crusaders would have their AB players available because those games are happening before players are called into camp. If true and the players are available and selected, then the Crusaders game could be a big one!

Yup, Saders and Blues have their ABs.
A full strength Crusaders team should be too good for a non-test Lions team. Unless the Lions play a near-top team in that match, there's a good chance they'll get rolled.

I sincerely believe that a full strength Crusaders team will beat the B&I Lions especially with their unbeaten run.

Didn't even notice Jaeger being involved. I played against him in club once when he was playing for Scumbrooke. No idea how he was let play even after schools was over. He won't be let linger long if he comes good over there I think.
